Michael owen - We need him and he needs us

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby JC_81 » Sat Jun 23, 2007 7:26 pm

I'll not discuss whether Owen was right or wrong to leave, his loyalty or whether we should bring him back considering the bad taste it left when he went to madrid - all that has been debated to death and is water under the bridge.

What I will discuss is whether in a footballing sense bringing Owen back this summer would be a good move.  Personally, I think even spending 10 million on him would be too big a risk considering he's started 13 games in 2 seasons.  We still don't really know what physical condition he's in, a couple of run outs for England doesn't prove he's up to the rough and tumble of the Premiership week-in, week-out.

I'll go as far as to say that at 28 and with the hamstring and knee injuries he's suffered, his best days are definitely behind him.  He's lost the blistering pace to stretch defences, but granted he's still a nippy enough player in and around the box I'd imagine.  He'll still score goals when fit, but that's the question, how long can he stay fit?

At this moment I think there's no question that a fit Owen would improve our side, but with doubts over his fitness are there better options out there?

Personally I think he still feels he owes the Newcastle fans, which is fair enough, and he'll want to give them at least one good season.  He'll only leave if Allardyce decides he doesn't want him, which I think is unlikely, and even at that I doubt Benitez would go for him.

Robbie never wanted to leave, Owen wanted to leave.

It doesn't matter if Robbie wanted to leave or not, it wasn't even an issue in the post, all he said was IF you thought Robbie was happy to return then Owen would be just as happy, and that makes perfect sense to me.

Regardless of how Owen left he would be made up to come back given the chance. I have would him back before ANY of the other so called targets we are reported to be looking at, ANY of them

It does matter, he compared the desire of Owen to Robbie, it just doesn't even compare. Owen could have stayed, but he fecked us over at the last minute. Robbie wanted to stay whereas Owen wanted to further his career.

Robbie never wanted to leave, Owen wanted to leave.

And you know this to be true because .? ? ?  ???   ???   ???

Why would he want to leave for Leeds United FFS!!!!!

Leeds are no Real Madrid

Liverpool are his hometown club, he's scouse through and through.

Roy Evans on his return,  "I'm surprised but delighted.

"It is brave man to bring him back. He was probably the most natural goalscorer of anyone I worked with.

"With Peter Crouch knocking balls down they have got a guy who can put it in the back of the net.

"I think he (Fowler) will be absolutely delighted. He never wanted to go."

If I could highlight the last little bit in bold I would but I don't know how to!

Redknapp, ""It is incredible news. Robbie is a special player but his heart was always at Liverpool.

"He really didn't want to leave and he is back where he belongs now. He was a firm favourite in the dressing room and was a god to the fans."

You still haven't answered the question . You have however given an indication as to what your opinions are based on. (other peoples opinions)

He compared the desire to return , nothing else

So Owen left under a cloud and therefore he would not have as much desire as  Robbie  to come back ?

Ok, if you want to ignore the opinions of those closest to the club when he left be my guest. I'll trust the opinions of those people and the desire Robbie showed as a basis for believing he never wanted to leave, you can believe what you like. I could probably find some direct quotes from Robbie somewhere but I can't be fecked.

He could have come back, he put England before Liverpool. He could have stayed with Madrid until the January transfer window or until the summer. Owen let his contract run down until the last day or so, £8m for a player who would have commanded £20m or so in summers past? A new manager left in the lurch with no real striker, come off it, if you love your club so much you don't feck about like that.

So to prove his desire he sits on the bench at Real by turning down a move to Newcastle who out bid us ( im not going into the politics of if we should of matched their fee ), i would call that comparing stupidity with desire and Owen is not stupid he wants to play football not sit warming a bench no matter how nice the weather is , there is to much made about his England career, the simple fact is he was and still is Englands first choice striker, a fit ( and not necessarily match fit )  Owen will always be one of the first names on the England team list even if he was sat on the bench at Madrid.

Exactly so why move then? He played 34 games for Madrid in his time there, no player could have realistically expected to play every single game given the number of strikers they had, he knew that even before he left, Ronaldo, Morientes, Raul all great players, he could never have expected to have played in every single game in his first season. The decision to go to Newcastle by his own admission was largely down to the World cup being in the summer of the next year, if, as you say he would have got in the squad anyway why move to Newcastle? He left Liverpool to further his career, and to improve his chances of winning trophies, was he really going to do that by going to Newcastle with their illustrious history of winning bugg,er all?
