With the post Euro 2004 dust settling as to why England were dumped out so ceremoniously. And the continuing saga as to whether Michael Owen will or won't sign a new contract.

My question is

if MO wanted to move on, because the team has not been going in the right direction over the past couple of sesons, I want to win medals, LFC need to sign world class players, Gerrard leaving a catastrophe, I want to win medals with LFC, I will not do a Bosman blah, blah, blah!!!!

Would any team really buy Michael Owen for what LFC would want to sell him for - circa. 25 million, after his dismal showing in Euro 2004, and with Milan Baros pulling trees out for the Czech Republic??

As a result of all this obvious devaluation, due to his inept performances in Euro 2004, and Shrek blue nose outshining him most of the way who holds the cards over this whole saga, LFC or Michael Owen and his agents?

Are you saying you think that Baros and Shrek are better players than Michael??

One good two week tournament does not make you a great striker, Baros scored just two goals last season, and mr potatoe head picked up more yellow cards than he scored goals all season for the blues.

Why do people on this forum who call themselves fans feel the need to slag off players at every given opportunity?

Michael is the best goalscorer at this club, and has been for five years, he won the balon'dor only three years ago, and that was no accident.

agree leon. michael is the most proloific scorer in this country's recent history. he's scored 158 goals in 297 first team games. that's better than 1 in 2. the guy is class. he has suffered from playing in a poor liverpool side and a very negative england side over the past year. with the arrival of cisse, i can see the two of them forming a lethal partnership. put your money on owen scoring 25+ next season. he's about to sign a new 2 year extension anyway.

I do not think baros or shrek are better players, what I am saying is that, the fact is - and yes it was only a 2 week time frame ie. Euro 2004 till England were knocked out, unfortunately football being a fickle business, a player is judged on form and value NOW not three years ago or indeed world Cup 1998, when MO first burst onto the scene.

facts are facts, although as Liverpool fans we do not like to admit it Rooney as a player NOW is a much more valuable commodity than Mikey, indeed Baros may well be on a par, if not going that way at the very least. This does not necessarily mean they are BETTER players.

What I am saying IMO has this made a difference to MO and his agents negotiating tactics with LFC, knowing that they cannot necessarily call the shots thinking in the back of their minds the 'BIG' clubs in Europe will come running to tempt MO away from LFC. This is pure economics, when negotiating

I feel this situation will inevitably drive MO to signing a new/extended contract with LFC most definetely.

And HIP HIP Hooray to that!!

Remember Leon that Baros had his leg broken early in the season and had he been fit he would have bagged alot more goals especially when Micheal was out at the same time but unforunately he was not able to play so we shall have to make our minds up this season but my gut says that Baros is the real deal and will bag plenty of goals for us.

Cisse will also provide much of a releaf for MO as he has had the burden of being our only outlet for goals we also need to get more goals from the midfield. I think that Sg may be able to improve on his goal tally when he has a class partner in the middle of the park.

You two have got to be kidding if you think Baros is better than Owen, never.

Shrek is worth more cus he is so young, and is a better player than Michael was at that age, but not on present is he the better player.

Fickle you say, how fickle are you two saying that Baros is better than and worth more than Owen after five goals in two weeks for the internation team.

at the present time milan baros is a more sellable commodity than owen on the back of a few decent games for the czechs. if baros was playing for england he would have disappeared into oblivion during the tournament aswell due to our defensive nature. baros will continue to be michael's understudy. they cannot play together.

Leon, if you read my reply I never said Baros is a better player than MO, of course not, I am saying at the moment he would be based on pure valuation NOW on a par if ot going that way.

Please put your blinkers and rose tinted spectacles to one side.

I love Mikey to bits like the next LFC fan, but facts are facts - MO had a s**t tournament, and Baros is breaking records at international level every time he pulls on the Czech national shirt!!!

No team will buy Owen on present form. Just face it. He has one year left of his contract. I think Liverpool should wait and see if he improves, and stay injury free, before a new contract is offered. Right now he does not deserve his fat paycheck. Do you honestly think it is easy to score 20+ goals a season in the premiership? And do you think a player who scored 20+ goals a season three years ago automatically will do that again this year? Wisen up guys. Nothing is permanent in football.

The penalties he missed alone, show a lack of confidence, hopefully Benitez can give him that back, hope so but possibly his pace has gone as a result of his injuries and lets face it pace and cool finishing at the end of it are his game, when Rushie lost his prowess up-front he became a more accomplished team player and was seen all over the pitch in his final years, I'm not sure MO has the same package as Rushie had. All said and done we've been here before and he's bounced back and proven his critics wrong time and again, hope he does this time, a different approach by Benitez tactically should help too, MO's strengh has too long dictated our style of play and some of his accomplices haven't helped (Heskey for starters)
Anyway, so what if he's worth sod all to potential clubs, in good form he's priceless to us!!!

He won't go, but if for some reason he wanted to leave, i'd say let him. He's been a wonder over the years but his form yo-yo's too much for me. It would nice to see him in form for considerably longer periods. HE has to take some responsiblity, along with others, for Liverpools table position.

However good Owen is, we must push him to the crunch - sign a new long term contract or leave now. We can't let him leave on a free, if he won't sign then sell him and we have a capable replacement.

XSD is right. Owen is good, but we have a capable replacement in Baros.

Midfield not creating chances for MO to score. So to say, SG and co. not doing their job? And MO dun have to look for chances as long as the midfield is not ticking ya? Looking at the how MO works for the ball these 2 season, there will not be more chances coming his way. He has become predictable to most defenders.

We need 4 strikers now, selling MO will not be a good option. And he will have to prove how good he is now, not 2 yrs ago, for Beni to play him often.
Come to think of it, how many foreign clubs will want him and pay for his high wages?
