Xabi Alonso.

We all know the goals he's scored so far here, but here some of the crackers he score when he was at Sociedad. Be grateful that we have him at the club  :D

Let's face it, would you swap Alonso for anyone?

Hope he's with us until he retires you know.  Absolute star of a player...

i remember that screamer against madrid well. sociedad won 4-1 and alonso absolutely ran the show in the centre of the park. infact i'm sure that was the season when sociedad finished narrowly second in la liga.

as for jonny's question, no i wouldn't swap him for anyone. when you consider the quality you get for the price you paid, £10m is an absolute steal, given that the player is only 24 aswell.

right. this thread has convinced me to go down the bookies later today and put a fiver on alonso to score from inside his own half again at some stage before the end of the season. :D

If anything, those videos go to show that he IS a complete player, but he's restricting the glory side of his game for the benefit of the club in the longterm.

Top lad. :nod

Stolen from RAWK just for Lando and Sabre :D

A little interview Xabi did tonight on a Spanish radio station translated for all the Xabi fans.  He didn't say anything of great significance but it's basically an update for all the Spanish listeners on how things are going for Liverpool and how the Christmas holidays are like for the players in England (In Spain they go on a holiday break for a couple of weeks).

(Interviewer)Xabi, good evening.

(Xabi) - Good evening.

How are you doing?

- Good, very good.

Two-nil this afternoon, you scored one goal and Liverpool are third
in the league.  The goal was a fine strike from outside of the penalty box...

- Yes, i received a pass on the edge of the box with five minutes left in the game
and it was our second goal.

How many have you scored this season?

- Three so far...

In all competitions no? You've got more in all competitions?

- In the league...(laughing)I haven't scored in other competitions so it's three goals
in total.

You did score in the Cup!?

- No, all have been league goals.

And that goal you scored from midfield?

- That was in the league, a midweek game i think.

AHHHH, okay...Your team started the season badly, very irregular in league play but
now it seems you've found your groove...

- Yeah, it's a bit of a shame really to have started so badly especially the away games where
we lost our first five outings and a big gap was created.  Now we're on a really good run
but the top teams are really strong also and it's going to be difficult to cut that lead back.

You're third now in the league but a little far behind Manchester who are first, 13 pts ahead of you...Are you
still thinking about the league? Or is the difference far too great right now?

- Well, they're really strong right now because they're playing really good football, winning all their
matches so like i said it's a bit difficult to reduce that gap but we are hauling our way forward, knowing
there are still many games to be played, trying to win every game and at the end we'll see how everything falls out for everybody but right now we're in a good run and after the Christmas period is when you usually find out if you got what it takes. We played today and now we've got 4 matches in the next 8 days.  It's a lot of games in such a short period of time and it could very well decide your future place on the table.

And then we have 2007 ahead of us with a very exciting knockout round of the Champions against Barça, eh?

- Yes, it's obvious that people here are eagerly anticipating that moment. To play against Barça is always a very special occasion and there's still a long ways to go but there's no doubt that you do think about it and you've got an eye set on that fixture.

The last two winners of the Champions League against each other.

So here comes the Christmas period which is a time of relaxation for most people but it means more work for you...You told us that you've got 4 matches to play in the next 8 days!!!

- Yes, we played today then on Tuesday,  next Saturday and then on Monday.  That's the 23rd, 26th, the 30th and on the 1st....

(Laughs)

- So (sighs)

So about Christmas...Thank you very much right?

- Yes... you don't really get to experience what's going on around you.  So there's no time to disconnect or relax.

Tell us about "Boxing Day"

- Well Boxing day is a traditional day every year on the 26th of December wich could fall on any day of the week and people usually  get together with their families and enjoy all kinds of activities and sports and in our case it's football and it's a custom that's always been respected here in England.

And many kids go to the games on that day...?

- Yes, usually the entire family goes.  They get together on Christmas, on the 25th, because here they don't celebrate Christmas Eve like we do.  They celebrate on the 25th during that day and on the 26th it's Boxing Day.

Hey, little by little...It's been a few years in Liverpool already...

- Yes, this is my third Christmas here in Liverpool...and you get to know better the local costums, you get more deeply involved in the English culture and well here we are, little by little.

So you do get to have any sort of special celebrations, do you have time at all?

- Well we try.  On the 24th a few of the lads will probably get together for dinner to celebrate Christmas Eve and then on the 31st we probably won't have time which is a bit of a shame because we play on the 1st, a morning game, and we'll have to get to our Hotel and we won't get to eat the grapes or get together for any sort of celebration...

Do they celebrate the New Year there like we do here...

- Oh yes

With grapes and everything?

- No, No.  There's no grapes but they do make a celebration.

And do they wear something red for good luck in the New Year or not?

- (laughs) I've got no idea about that, i couldn't tell you...

Well you dress in red for the whole year so you don't really need to do that now...

-Yes and we've got a morning game so we will do that on the 1st...

And a morning game!!

- Yes.  12:45pm kick-off...

Holy...

And what about your Real Sociedad...

- Lets hope we start well the New Year and it seems that we've gotten better as of late so...with the New Year comes a new luck and despite things being difficult at the time for us hopefully we'll turn things around a bit...

I know what I'm going to tell you now may be a bit strange for you but i've got a friend who knows a lot about a lot of things and he's here and he's been talking to me and he's been telling me for a month that next year you're going to wear the -red and white- and it's not Bilbao's colours... and i tell him 'Sure you really wish'...

-(laughs)I don't know maybe he knows more than i do...

(laughs) So no chance...

- No, no...i don't know what he's talking about really(laughs)

(laughs) I'll let you know who that friend is who tells me all these things. Xabi, we wish you the best, thanks for everything and like we say 'Urte berri on!'

- Okay, Urte berri on! and happy holidays for all.
