Left wing - Who would you play?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Personally I think there's something a bit strange when Rafa picks Gerrard on the left wing considering all the options we've got there.

Aurelio, Gonzales, Zenden, Luis Garcia, Riise & even Warnock at a push can play there, so I can't understand why Stevie's getting stuck out there.

I think everyone's agreed that Gerrard definately shouldn't be on the left, I was wondering who you all think should be playing there.

Personally Kewell would still be my first choice when he's fit again. I have to admit I was one of the people wanting rid after the 04/05 season, but last season changed my mind. Unfortunately he picked up another injury, but before he was getting better & better with every game, and I would like to see him given a run when he comes back again.

Until then I would like to see Riise playing there with Warnock at LB. Aurelio & Gonzales, whilst showing flashes of what they can do, haven't adapted to the league yet. Zenden's natural position isn't LW IMO, I see him as more of a ball boy or mascot. And I think Garcia puts in his best work playing off a lone striker.

Who would you have on the left and why?

If kewell's injured then gonzales. Gonzales is a much better LW than auerlio and zenden IMO.

Gonzalez seems to have disappeared off the face of the planet recently, probably as combination of the fact that he looks very lightweight and hasn't really impressed when he's played. He's very raw and is probably going to spend (at least) half this season being introduced to the premiership slowly like Agger last season. Having said that, he does have the capability of finding the net. As far as I can see Riise is only played for his goalscoring ability - he doesn't give a lot else. So why not give Gonzo a few more runouts. Gonzo does track back quite well and gives a bit of cover to the LB.

All in all, I don't think we'll see two wingers starting a game too often so if Pennant starts on the right then Aurelio/Riise/Garcia will start on the left (certainly when we're playing 442).

We've only played with two out and out wingers twice this season, once in the Charity Shield where we played 451 and the second leg of the CL qualifier where we played 442. All other times it has been a winger and a player tucking in/fullback.

Agreed about the lack of 2 out-and-out wingers on the pitch at the same time--Rafa's already showed some frustration with an overly gung-ho approach at times this season and so he's not going to exacerbate the problem with two wingers.

If you believe, as I do, that Stevie does his best work from the right these days, that means that we could and maybe should play Gonzales more on the left until Kewell is fit.  I would certainly be interested in seeing what the kid can do over a run of games.

Alternatively, I think that playing Riise there is a safe bet.  He gets forward and back willingly, gets some decent crosses in, has good understanding with those around him and is a good bet to get on the scoresheet every 4-5 games.  Given our current defensive frailties down that flank, having him and Aurelio double up doesn't seem like a bad option either.

This is really a no brainer.............. Gonzalez for sure, if Kewell wasn’t injured.

I for the life of me can’t understand why Rafa keeps refusing to play Gonzalez, his already scored two goals for the (little) time he has played. We know he will only get better in the premiership over time and can clearly say he is a much better winger than Aurelio, Zenden, Garcia or anyone else we have that can play out there.   :suspect:

i echo the thoughts of everyone else that think kewell when fit and Gonzo now.

Stevie should never play on the left especially like mentioned above we have a wealth of talent to play in that position. Gonzo should be given a run in the team so he can experience the premiership. i know he might be a little raw and light weight but wasn't ronaldo the same when he came to the mancshite?

Yeah like everyone else Rafa has got to start playing Gonzo more. Give him a chance. I suppose now people are starting to realise the value of a fit Harry Kewell. But the reality is he is not fit so hopefully Rafa will get it right with whom he chooses.

I think Lando said somewhere in a previous thread that the rotation policy is here to stay. That is true so we will see a few players in that position but if we don't qualify for Europe(bite my tongue) things will change.

gonzo or riise but hk when fit, its nice to be able to choose but really imo gonzo should have played more but with Rafa rotating alot its hard to cement a place, [with the exception of a few]

i think we're missing Kewell on the left quite a lot.  However, for now i'd use Gonzales for the European matches (he should be more suited to their play) and use Aurelio and Riise as a double act on the left for the league.

Kewell(aka 'H') :)  Gonzales has done pretty good when he is picked though.

it's amazing to see all the posts saying they would prefer kewell on the left. Kewell has been slated on this forum since joining us but i think the form he showed last season has turned alot of people around.

I for one have always liked him and glad for him that maybe now with the backing of the majority of supporters behind when he returns he will not feel so much pressure to perform and it will be the kewell we know he can be
