Fsv mainz 05 v liverpool - Pre-season friendly

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby PureLoneWolf » Sat Aug 05, 2006 12:36 am

Roit - Ignoring all the peacock posturing....

Just got back from the match.

One thing to point out, just to give you an indication.  The game was a sell out for Mainz, they seriously wanted to win it, they made more noise than they probably did all season last year because of who they were playing.  They even had a couple of players diving in the box....in a frickin friendly ffs

That said, a number of observations :-

Pennant looked dangerous, quick and stronger than I thought he would be, had a tendency to drift inside a bit, leaving the wing exposed, but generally pretty good.

Bellamy looked sharp and above all bloody quick whilst managing to keep his head up.

Stevie G looked solid as always but not quite ticking tonight

Xabi was much the same

Carra was immense, I think someone forgot to mention to him it was a friendly lol

Anderson looked really good, aggressive, quick and not afraid to get stuck in

Hypia was his usual calm and assured self :)

Crouch seemed out of sorts, but was getting bundled all over the place, I remember after some of the challenges shouting to Mainz that it was only a bloody friendly...

Kronkamp seems to be a better wingback than a full back - He got caught out of position quite a lot and didn't seem to track back enough

Zenden had a shocking first half, but started to show some good stuff in the second

Garcia was very impressive when he came on

Same for Riise

Hobbes looked like noone had really given him any information, but he wasn't as bad as some are suggesting

Traore was awful, absolutely no idea how to hold a line and going forward was worse.  If this is the shop window, someone just stuck a 50% off sign right in front of him tbh

Diao - Well the highlight was that at least he got a laugh from the crowd....

The biggest worry for me was Carson.  This lad is our number 2, and his decision making is woeful, 3 times in the space of 5 minutes he came bounding out of his box for a ball that he was never going to get to, only to make a total hash of it and carra et al had to scramble back and make last ditch challenges for...  I am never sure if the decision making aspect of the game is something that can be instilled in a keeper - Something tells me it is more of a natural instinct....if thats the case, he is in trouble.

Travelling Kop...we were in full voice, enjoying the German Beer and YNWA was belted out as loud as I can remember.  My kids loved their first experience.

Like I said earlier, the thing you probably couldn't get from a stream or audio commentary was just how much Mainz wanted to win this game, total sell out crowd, the noise was immense - Nothing like I was expecting from a friendly.  The challenges and tempo they played the game was the demonstration of a team with desire.  At the end of the match they were cheering like they thought it was a cup final or something, even fireworks, flags on cars and bloody horns going.

Unfortunately, we had very little desire and it genuinely looked like a kick about for our lads.

Am I :censored: of with the result - Yes, but mainly due to the fact that I live in Frankfurt, 30 mins from Mainz and am gonna have to put up with some stick at work

Am I concerned about the CL Qualifier or Community Shield on the back of this game?...No - Do I think that when it makes a difference the lads will come good again?...Yes

Rafa will have gotten out of this game what he wanted, confirmed a few things and will put it all together.

I better go to bed now - Frickin knackered after writing all that.....as I say to the missus.....sorry about the length ;)

Yes we lost 5-0, but those were genuine observations - It IS possible to have some positives from the most unexpected and disappointing results.....

Liverpool certainly have all the tools to successed, and even win Mainz, Grasshoppers and Kaizersloutren with their second squad.

If it's someone's fault for the situation, it's Rafa. If we lose like this in an official match,  and I am mainly talking about the match agienst Chelsea, which is very important, it will be a disaster. If we lose to them 5:0 like we lost to Mainz it will be a huge disgrace to us. We must to prepare well for Chelsea.

Liverpool in general is a good team, but we have to get an honorable result agienst Chelsea, and not be humiliated, else Rafa has to be fired. With all sympathy, let's just say we played bad. Very bad. I suppose that I started to have bad feelings about this season after we lost to Grasshoppers, because I dreamt how Milan revenges us from 2 years ago on the quarter finals and drops us from europe.. yes I really dreamt that. Thank god I woke up from this nightmare.

I can't stand this "Moronio" anymore. Let's shut his mouth already in the beginning of the season. We must win Chelsea! I never cry, at least not during this year, but I admit that if we will lose badly to Chelsea I will. Tears will fill my face, and I won't be ashamed to cry. It would deserve any tears I can spare.

Who doesn't agree with me? We have to beat Chelsea!

One thing I just thought of - Pretty funny actually - In the UK, the announcer reads out the team sheet and we cheer after every name is called out.

Over here they do it a bit different, the announcer calls out the number and first name, and the crowd yell out the surname.  It's pretty cool actually.  Trouble is, he came over to us and did the same thing, we didn't have a bloody clue.

Announcer: "Number 13 - Scott....."
Crowd: "YEEEAH"

Announcer: "Number 2 - Jan....."
Crowd: "YEEEAH...kamp"

No idea and pretty funny, everyone looking at each other, half of us trying to shout the name, the other half not knowing what to bloody shout lol

Oh, and when they were 3 up - The announcer started a shout, "Mainz...", crowd answers 3, "Liverpool", crowd answers 0 - Crowd shout at the top of their lungs... "Thankyou thankyou thankyou"

You probably had to be there, but we had a bloody good laugh at it - Wonder if it would work at Anfield :blues:

We lost 4-1 to the bastards last year but Rafa wasnt fired.

Thing is bug, this was one off.

A BIG FAT FUCKING ONE OFF.

A game against Chelsea is nothing like a game against Mainz.

I'd rather we get beaten 5-0 by Mainz than by Chelsea to be honest.

This was a friendly. A game to get match-fitness more than anything. And you forget, Diao was playing! Fuck, I just realised, we were doomed from the start!  :D

Dear me, do they remove all of the sharp implements from your home.

Trust me (and I am in no way trying to claim I am some kind of expert), but being there you could see that the lads were using it as a kickabout.  Yes I would have much preferred them to stuff em, but the team was never set out that way from the beginning, you could see it in the way they were knocking the ball around at the back.

It was a workout for them, nothing more.  You can't place any real emphasis on it for the Chelsea match or even the CL qualifier.  The team selection and tactics should show you that.

You will see a different LFC in the first two "Real" games of our season coming up.  And you know what, even if we were to get tonked 5-0 off the "New" Scum - The end of the world it aint, and to suggest firing the manager for it is possibly the most bizarre comment I have ever read.

I suggest you get a little perspective and remember it was a friendly....

So why the f#ck isn't he gone already? We've lost to them 4-1 and haven't beaten them in the league in two seasons since Cheyrou's winner at Stamford Bridge.

Stop talking out of your :censored:.

We conceded the last three goals in the last five minutes of the game where most of our 1st teamers were off.

The first goal was right after we made changes after HT.

Hobbs once again made a mistake.

We still haven't seen Reina,Carragher,Hyypia,Finnan and Riise play at the same time at the back. It's all been rotation which is why we've been conceding soft goals.

I don't see that happening once the season starts. I rather we make mistakes now and test some of our players rather than half-way through the season.

We lost, the scoreline was a bit flattering, sh!t happens in football.

Fairly red faced result but its pre-season game, i rather these kick up pants how now rather then a in a tricky CL qualifier game
After the World cup and with an influx of new personnel i wasnt exactly expecting a fast start off the blocks though i rather not see that scoreline again regardless of the game
