No Irishman now has a right to B*tch about British rule etc. There were times in the past but now we are flying it and speaking English is a huge advantage. We did NOT lose our culture - well no more than any other country in this "American age".

Northern Ireland is settling down too and hopefully they will all learn to get along. I don't think that the Republic of Ireland or Britain has any economic interest in Northern Ireland (I think it is in bad shape and relies on UK government grants/subsidies).

Also, the perception that Catholics in Northern Ireland all want to be part of a united Ireland is false. A poll carried out in the last few weeks showed the figure among catholics was roughly 50% (can't remember the exact figure). About 20% of the police force is now Catholic too - this figure is growing.

I am guessing that many catholics in NI feel that they are doing well and fear that if it didn't get its subsidies from Britain that the economy would go to sh*te and that they'd lose their jobs. I think ROUGHLY 45% of NI is catholic (maybe a bit more) but overall It seems that only about 25% of the population would want a United Ireland - assuming nearly all protestants do not want a united Ireland.

I do NOT want one as we(ROI) are doing well at the moment but I do hope that I live to be old enough to drive up in a Southern reg car and go to a bar in any part of NI and have a meal drink (soft, if I am driving!) there. Same for British reg in catholic areas.

If another George Best comes along though, I say invade the North, conquer it, and switch Duff to the right wing.

which brings me to the point i want to make, it's not so much the EU i like, it's european culture (southern europe to be precise) where there is more to life than what salary you're on, what your house is worth and what car you drive. we've got it all wrong in britain - we BOAST about how many hours a week we work, how f*cked up is that in southern europe they stick 2 fingers up to the rule book and put family & friends first which is how it should be. the french have an expression for it, it's called "savoir faire" which loosely translated means they "know how to live" and that doesn't revolve around rampant consumerism, it's about having REAL quality of life not just owning lots of stuff

which brings me to my next point, we're all talking here about being able to move to france/spain/germany or wherever. can you imagine how difficult that would have been before the EU opened up borders in 1992? feckin impossible i reckon, and for changing that, the EU should be applauded

It was all sorted Woolly, but it went a bit pear shaped. It ended up that there was no job for me other half and I would'nt go without him. Its a dream we both have, so if he cant get a job, I won't go. As for learning the lingo, I have the names of a couple of really good home learning lessons I can give you
