This is a query so that the british around here give some insight about how you feel about European Union and all that.

I won't enter the discussion, I'd just like to read your thoughts about it. I've spoken and drunk with several english people already but I've learnt that Scousers have their own personality and in many things they are not like the cockneys and think different.

So are you one of those "Back off Brussels" guys, or do you believe in the European Thingy?

I respect much every opinion, but a UE without the full cooperation of U.K. would be pointless IMO.

i do not agree with the EU. Germany are in charge now, more or less, so what was the second world war about, if it wasnt for freedom from german ambition.

they have europe diplomatically. fucking gets me angry.

It makes sense that Germany is "in charge" though, It's the biggest country in Europe and has the strongest economy. Frankfurt is the hub of mainland Europe in terms of access to the rest of the continent and the financial sector.

try telling that to the 80yr + folk still around who ask me, why are germany in charge, didnt we fight them to stop there domination of europe, not once but twice.

Hardly, those 80 year olds around you probably think a Fascist/Nazi regime is still in charge, when in fact nothing could be further from the truth (their is sill a Neo Nazi element in Germany, but even Engand has one).

Germany isn't going to take over the World or anything like that, it just has a large say in Europe because it is a prosperous demcocracy with the largest population in Europe. Many Germans are very fluent in English as well which helps as it is the lingua franca these days.

Germany is one of the more passive world powers, it never supports the US in it's invasion of Iraq, Afghanistan etc. Germany is very weary of it's past and most of it's citizens can't beleive that Germany was the way it was 60 years ago, they hate what Hitler stood for and don't want Germany to return to those grim old days.

You're being a little paranoid. There are more dangerous countries like North Korea and Iran about, and major world problems like terrorism etc to combat, rather than worrying about Germany ffs. Germany is an ally, not an enemy.

You’re talking about a completely different set of circumstances; it’s a ludicrous argument. Germany was under a Fascist regime that wanted to take over Europe through force, by invading nations and wiping out so - called “inferior” races.

Germany is now the richest county in Europe with a progressive democracy as I said before, it makes sense that they have a large say in what goes on in the EU, particularly as it’s benefits are largely economic – therefore the largest, most successful economy should be at the centre surely. The EU is about integration not domination.

War has nothing to do with it, Germany isn’t trying to impose their culture on Britain or the French, all these nations share different historical backgrounds and languages – that’s never going to change.

Why should a war, which was thought sixty years ago in a very different political environment dictate what happens in the EU? It’s ludicrous.

Perhaps it’s your military background talking Judge, I’m not sure, but Germany is nothing to fear.

London is the largest International Banking Centre in Europe with an estimated 50% share of European Investment Banking activity. Most International Banks are either headquartered or have an office here.

London has the most foreign banks (486), compared with Frankfurt (267), Paris(266) and New York (253).

London is a major international centre for investment banking. It is the world’s top city for institutional equity holding and the most important OTC derivatives trading market with 36% of the global turnover.

London is the leading international centre for Foreign Exchange trading with 31% of global turnover.

So why not have the EU centred around London?

everyone to their own opinion i suppose. thats fine. but i think what i think.

i dont think we should fear germany, like you say i do !!, but i dont think germany should be top of the pile, especially for some, in living memory of others etc etc.

i agree we should move on, but there is always two sides to a coin

you are young, but there are many variables and issues which hurt some people, and that should not be ignored.

I'm sure the fact that London isn't on the mainland and the fact England decided not to take the Euro are major reasons for it.

Frankfurt is far more accessible for most of Europe.

Back in the 50' I often heard Liverpool referred to as the "capital of Ireland" , every street had Irish people living in it . Two of my aunties married Irish fella's . Cut a scouser deep enough and you'll find some Irish in there .Understand your bitterness but on this site especially I'd appreciate it if us scousers weren't included in your reference to "They" .

London is the money capital of europe, it is one of the most important cities in the world, thats fact and i dont care if you dont like it.

Brussels should stay out, it isnt strong enough to make important desicions so it makes pointless ones all the time

There is a lot of good about the EU. As mentioned earlier people would work longer and have less rights and woman would have to work for less if it wasn't for the EU.

They do obsess about trivial things sometimes - there was talk that open caskets at funerals would be banned (very popular in Ireland , don't know about Britain).

I'm not convinced about the Euro though as the German economy dominates Europe and what is in the interest of Germany and France may not be in the best interest of another smaller country when it comes to interest rates, one economy could boom while another be in recession.

I am a fan of the Eu though as building such close ties between the countries has meant that for the first time in history the thought of two of Europes poweres going to war with each other seems impossible. Isolation can breed ignorance and help stereotype others.

France & Germany throw their weight about in Brussels simply cos they are the 2 biggest economies who have wholeheartedly become "European". Britain can't expect to throw our weight around cos we've only got one foot in Europe, hence why Europe doesn't take us seriously. We need to get into Europe PROPERLY to make our voice heard as the second biggest economy of Europe (still marginally ahead of France    )

Any political party who wants to sell the idea of Europe to us only needs to tell us 2 things:

Wouldn't get too concerned about Germany flexing her economic muscle in Europe , figures for 2005 show that both the German and French economies are performing well below that of the UK .

Unemployment figures for 2005 starkly indicate that Germany and France have major problems within their economies.
At 4.7%, the UK still has one of the lowest jobless rates in the world.
France and Germany have 9.8%, while Spain has 10.2% and the US has 5.2%.
Only Ireland, Austria and Luxembourg have lower unemployment rates.

dawsonio mate you live in london, manchester only got running water last week and it's all run out already (i think some salford scallies robbed it ) night buses are few and far between here as well. basically it's ok if you live in town (20th floor apartments not much use to a family though) but outside that it's vast swathes of sh*thole for miles then some nice posh suburbs so far out you can't be @rsed going into town cos it's £30 in a cab home
