"I am not the kind of manager who will pay £20m if the value is only £10million." Benitez eventually lost patience with Sevilla, who refused to budge on the £12m they wanted for Alves.

this to me suggests although Benitez is  shrewd dealer, this may cost us the league, in terms of holding back for quality!

So your saying benitez is wrong saying we should only pay the market price for a player? You think we should pay over the odds for a player? Alves was overpriced in rafas valuation so hes wasnt going to pay over what he thought he was worth. We havent got the funds to go throwing money at clubs, if you want a club to do that go support chelski.

Let's hope he proves all his doubters wrong.

Rafa is no fool. If he can see something in him, it's there.

Now London and your diseased media - leave the lad alone, you bunch of blood-thirsty Vultures.

sky sports

Steven Gerrard wants Craig Bellamy to demonstrate all his fiery attributes for Liverpool.

The Welshman was lured to Liverpool from Blackburn Rovers this summer and some believe he can spur them on to title glory.

Gerrard feels the striker has the tools to flourish at Anfield, but also believes his famed fiery streak can also benefit The Reds.

Bellamy has a history of rubbing players up the wrong way and Gerrard wants that to continue.

"As a player he's a nightmare to play against, horrible," Gerrard told The Daily Mirror. "It's funny because I've had a few run-ins with him on the pitch and I think I'll be reminding him of that.

"But, believe me, I'll be glad to have a player like that on my side. We need characters like that on our team.

"To win the league and other trophies, you need to have characters who have also got the quality - and Craig has definitely got that.

"As a player, you can be too nice. All the best players are top quality but they also have the character to go with it, that's what I like in a player, and what I like about Craig.

"Maybe we have been a bit nice as a team in recent seasons but we are toughening up, and we are becoming a very difficult side to play against. That's what we need if we are going to win the title."

I think McLaren should seriously consider pennant to get involved in his team

Jermaine Pennant is hoping his form for Liverpool can earn him a place in the England squad.

Pennant is hoping that playing and impressing for Liverpool in the Champions Leagu will earn him a call up to the England squad. Steve McClaren was at Anfield for Liverpool's Champions League qualifier against Maccabi Haifa where Pennant impressed and the Liverpool winger is hoping more performances like that will get him an England cap.

"Playing in the Champions League can only improve my England chances. If you are proving yourself in the Champions League and playing well, it is going to be at the back of the England manager's mind to pick you," said Pennant.

"The more I can play in big games like these, the better it is going to be for me.

"The only thing left for me is to play for my country. If that could happen, it would be a great turnaround for me and my career.

"It is an incentive to know the England manager is watching you but my manager puts me under pressure every time I go out to play well and that makes me determined to do my best for the team.

"The team comes before anything but if you can continue to play well for the team then sooner or later hopefully the England coach will take notice.

"With Becks out of the team, it is there for the taking. England have already got two players in Shaun Wright-Phillips and Aaron Lennon, while Steven Gerrard showed he could play there too.

"So it is going to be difficult but I can offer something different and if the manager gives me the chance I know I can take it."
