A sub?  ???

So who do you think is going to be our starting right winger, Rafa hasn't spend £6.7m for Pennant to sit on the bench!!

Assuming that Rafa hasn't bought him to sit on the bench , with  Gerrard moved back inside, Alosonso or Sissoko are gonna be fighting it out for the remaining CM spot . Unless of course he goes with a 5 man midfield with Gerrard pushed forward .

The more i think about it , Rafa's permutations are now seemingly endless.    :D

Can't wait for the season to start.

yes, I really can't wait.  Many players on the team are going to be competing for their positions and Rafa's got tons and tons of different combinations.

I really can't wait for the season to start!   :)

Do you expect to be taken seriously with comments like that?

Seria A is full of diving nancy-boys.

All you need is a tactical brain, and good technical ability. Why do you think Robbie attracted such interest from Italy when Frog-boy sold him?

If Seria A is the most physical league in the World, then you're straight, my friend.

Yes...the...Serie...A...does...have...very...tight...defending...but...it...does...not...m

ean...it...is...the...most...physical...

I can't do this any more.

Serie A is a traditionally defencive league. It has changed a bit with the years, but the defending is quite rough and often dirty.

However, a physical league it is not. Close marking, patient build ups and skillful link up(as in the basic 1-2's etc, not tricky Brazilian stuff), is the way it is played in Serie A.

Trez isn't much of a holding striker and even if he tried will most like fail as one. Kuyt however is stronger and I think (I may be wrong with this) a better link up player similar to crouch, but with a better overall goalscoring ability. Trez is the all out cherry picking striker many people have been asking for, but I for one would rather Kuyt minus the falling over.

EDIT

By the way, isnt this supposed to be a Pennant thread???

Anyhoo...

With the current squad, I think we could see 2 different formations throughout the season. Not the only two - but the 2 most often used.

Here is my guess for the hime games, with the only possible exception being Sh*tski:

                                        Reina

                    JC                 Sami         Agger

                          Sissoko            Alonso

Pennant                            Gerrard                         Gonzalez

                         Bellamy                 Fowler/Crouch/New chap.

Here is what I'd expect for the tougher away games:

                                       Reina

          Finnan            JC                Sami              Aurelio

                            Sissoko         Alonso

                                     Gerrard
Pennant                                                         Gonzalez

                                Bellamy/Crouch.

The alternative at home (4 at the back), would see Sissoko or Alonso rested in place of Finnan, and Aurelio replacing Agger. Probably expect to line up like this:

                                       Reina

        Finnan              JC               Sami             Aurelio

                                      Alonso

Pennant                                                             Gonzalez
                                     Gerrard

                     Fowler/Crouch
                                           Bellamy/New chap.

We have so many options now, and I wouldn't like to be Rafa when picking the team!!!

No matter who plays, we have easily one of the top two squads in the Premiership.

Sh*tsk, Scum and Goooooooners:

I believe you may like to stock up on the following items:

Whats just as interesting are the names NOT mentioned in those line ups Lando . Particularly Kewell, Riise and Garcia . They'll certainly be competition for places , not sure how some of the more established members will settle for being  bit part players .

All in all though we are looking so much stronger and competitive.

Absolutely. Not forgetting Zenden, Kromkamp, Paletta, Anderson, etc.

We're getting there...

I think its time to offload some of the players currently on our payroll. Seems like we have a surplus of left sided players with seemingly 3 vying for left wing (Riise, Gonzalez, Kewell), and as many as 4 vying for left back (Riise, Aurelio, Traore, Warnock). Of course, Diao leaving need not be mentioned and perhaps a few more going off on loan (Pongolle, Warnock/Traore, Anderson) will leave us with a perfectly trimmed squad.

Back to the Kuyt debate, I believe that he isn't as bad a player as some of you think. It's actually the matter of whether he is REALLY needed at the moment. We have currently as many as 6 players that can fulfill the forward roles (Bellamy, Crouch, Fowler, Pongolle, [Garcia], [Kewell]) and do you think we can afford to accomodate so many similarly skilled strikers in the same team while keeping morale up? Unless we experience another injury crisis, such as that suffered 2 seasons ago, I don't see why we should buy another striker for that matter. Like I said, we should be trimming the squad at the moment.

I agree totally. The next most important issue is to fix funding for the new arena.

Yeah we do need to get rid of the deadwood but the big question is how are we going to get rid of them? No one will have any of them

In the Pennant interview: "Yes, this is the best club in the country and the best club to be at so if I can't do it here then I won't be able to do it anywhere."

Does that make sense?  This is the best club in the country so if i fail here i will fail anywhere.. ???  :D

Offload deadwood............Rafa being doing that for last couple of seasons.
We are now in the situation that we have some serious competition for places and that can only be good for the team.
I expect by end of season some players will move on as they dont get enough game time but that just a side effect of happy situation of having a decent squad.
Even moneybays Chelski are faced with that problem

Personally, I feel we DO still need another out-and-out striker.

Garcia is good, but Fowler is better.

Kewell - see above.

Bellamy and Crouch are like chalk and cheese, so I would say a Kuyt-type player is EXACTLY what we lack.

Strong, swift and aerially dominant.
