Birmingham's official statement regarding the supposed bid from today:

Official statement from the club:

'Contrary to reports in today's media, Birmingham City Football Club has not agreed a fee with Liverpool FC for Jermaine Pennant.

The two clubs have talked on a couple of occasions but Birmingham City and Liverpool Football Club are a long way off in their respective valuations of the player.

Until Birmingham's valuation is met, the Club will not even consider a move for Pennant.

As Birmingham City have continually stated, they are not looking to sell any of their best players.'

Duff £5 million & £6 million for Pennant? Do you remember the football series on BBC2 which followed Pennant, Defoe & Clarage over about six weeks. The only thing good thing I came away with was that Pennant is a spoiled :censored:!!

Lots of footabll playes are when they're young - remember he was this teenage sensation that Arzenal paid £2M a few years back.
Must have gone to his head.

He may well be getting his act together, people "grow up" at different rates.

Liverpool are close to sealing a £6.2m swoop for Birmingham winger Jermaine Pennant, according to a report.
Birmingham revealed earlier on Tuesday that they turned down a £3.5m offer for the 23-year-old from Liverpool.

Now the Press Association has been told by a source close to Blues that an improved bid has been accepted with Pennant now set for talks at Anfield.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez said on Monday there "could be another two players in by the weekend".

One of those now seems certain to be Pennant, and it is claimed that Holland international Dirk Kuyt will be the other - if the Reds can negotiate Feyenoord down from their £12m asking price.

The Press Association's report says Liverpool have already failed with a player-plus-cash offer which would have seen Jan Kromkamp and Jerzy Dudek going to Feyenoord.

Pennant's arrival would solve Benitez's search for a right-sided midfielder, with his first choice, Sevilla's Daniel Alves, proving too pricy at £12m.

The Birmingham player is much cheaper, even after the Championship club negotiated the fee upwards because they knew they had to give Pennant's old club Arsenal a quarter of any cash receieved for him.

Blues boss Steve Bruce said earlier: "There has only been one bid of around £3.5m but we don't want to sell him for that."

They reportedly wanted £8m, but have settled for £6.2m, even though St Andrews managing director Karren Brady had said the player would not be sold at all.

Pennant joined Birmingham from Arsenal for £3m in April 2005

6.2 million, sounds like a bit too much for me, mind you thinking about it we've saved 6 million.

i would definately have prefered alves. but pennant is a good 2nd option

I think we did pay over the odds for pennant. but if you have - lets say 20mil for example - and you need 10mil to go on a striker. so 10 left for a winger, if cant get alves for 10 and his club will not budge we have to look elsewhere, simple as.

I think rafa was between a rock and a hard place, he didnt want to pay over the odds for either winger, but if you have a budget which you can not go over then you have to pay over the odds for the cheaper option.

Pennant is quality and will certainly add a lot of pace to our game.
