Blues confirm Pennant bid
By Graeme Bailey

Birmingham have confirmed that they have rejected an offer from Liverpool for Jermaine Pennant.

The Reds are keen to land the former Arsenal winger, but Blues are standing firm over their valuation - believed to be over £5 million.

Birmingham chief Steve Bruce confirmed Liverpool had only bid £3.5 million for Pennant.

"We had an offer from Liverpool which we rejected and, until they meet our valuation of Jermaine Pennant, they will get the same answer," said Bruce.

"There's only been one bid, of around £3.5million. We paid £3 million for Jermaine plus we owe Arsenal 25% of any sell-on fee.

"We don't want to sell him for £3.5million, that's for sure.

"Now it's a question of how far Liverpool are prepared to go in meeting our valuation. If they don't then they will move on, I suppose."

not sure if that is the latest progress, i think this 6 million was the second attempt after the 3.5 having been failed. i could be wrong but 3.5 had been a past days issue

Reds plan fresh bid for winger

Jul 25 2006

By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

RAFA BENITEZ hopes Jermaine Pennant will be a Liverpool player by the end of the week.

The Liverpool squad head to their Swiss pre-season camp tomorrow, with the Reds preparing a fresh move to bring the 23-year-old winger to Merseyside.

Liverpool hope their £5m valuation will be enough to convince Birmingham to reluctantly allow the player to make the move.

However, as with other Anfield targets during the closed season, the valuation of the player could still become a sticking point.

Benitez's capture of Pennant would end Liverpool's long-running pursuit of Seville's Daniel Alves, whose valuation has proved too excessive.

With Liverpool also hoping to recruit another striker, Benitez feels Pennant currently represents better value.

Although Benitez has the funds available to match Seville's valuation of Alves - who has been his primary target throughout the pre-season - that would swallow up his current transfer kitty.

He'd then need to sell before he could afford to bid for another top class striker, and with little interest in his fringe players and Liverpool still yet to secure major investment, that would be a risky strategy.

Birmingham slapped an £8m price tag on Pennant when Liverpool made their first approach three weeks ago, which is far in excess of what the Reds' are prepared to pay.

But a fresh move, with a fee based on appearances, will hopefully prove more successful.

Meanwhile, Liverpool finally took a step towards shedding some of their unwanted baggage when Salif Diao joined Charlton on trial today.

Diao is one of many squad players available for a nominal fee, but interest in the fringe players has been in frustratingly short supply, seriously impacting on Benitez's ability to raise more funds for fresh blood.

I can't find any news on an accepted bid by us on the net. Most of the reports said that Liverpool is preparing a fresh bid and that Steve Bruce is adamant that Liverpool would have to match their valuation of Pennant.

A very good player in my opinion, was never really given a chance at Arsenal. He will be a very good addition.

rafa says in .tv that he is hopeful of adding "one or two" new faces to his Liverpool squad before the end of the week.

while the options have now been getting crystalized, not many names being named at this moment
effort for kuyt and alves have been halted, i think pennat is now appearing to be the most possibel signing

I don't understand it when people say they can't believe we're paying £6m for Pennant when we could have had Alves for £6m more. I'd love to know the reasoning behind such bold statements. For a combined £12m we could have that illustrious pacy striker and right midfielder. Far from everyone's first choices no doubt, but at least it's largely for non-footballing reasons, I think most of us know both lads CAN play on the pitch and that's the main thing.

More substnce as Bascombe puts his name to teh story also:

Benitez sights could be on a flight of fancy
Jul 25 2006

By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

FOR the second successive summer, Rafa Benitez expects to head to Liverpool's pre-season base in Switzerland with at least two spare seats on the flight. The Liverpool boss hoped to conclude his transfer business before the week's intensive training in Europe, which begins tomorrow.

And although Benitez remains confident some of the new faces he craves may arrive by the end of the week, there are undoubted signs of frustration with the regularity the phrase 'transfer saga' allies itself to many Liverpool deals.

Over a year since the Reds' first pursuit of a right midfielder, the elusive winger is still to be paraded in Liverpool colours.

If things go to plan, this will be resolved with the imminent arrival of Jermaine Pennant.

The Reds are in the process of increasing their initial £3.5m valuation to nearer £5m.

That will still leave Benitez with funds available to pursue an equally, if not more, urgently needed striker.

While the apparent delays make pre-season an often excruciating period for supporters craving transfer news, they are an inevitable consequence of Liverpool's far more careful recruitment policy.

Benitez refuses to pay over the odds for players valued above their talent. That's why, despite money being available if the manager had given the go-ahead, players such as Simao Sabrosa and Daniel Alves have, at differing points in the last 12 months, teetered on the brink of a switch to Anfield, but never crossed the line.

Whenever valuations have increased, Benitez has declined to concede to the will of chairmen sensing an inflated price, or agents yearning ridiculously high commission.

It should be noted, however, that Benitez takes such a moral stance towards his transfer deals as much as a matter of necessity as principle. The tighter the purse strings, the easier it is to be prudent.

Liverpool will be thankful the foresight of Craig Bellamy's agent inserted a get-out clause in his Blackburn contract, allowing one major statement of intent so far this summer without a prolonged period of negotiation.

Benitez would be more willing to meet Seville's asking price for Alves if he knew he had enough money left to buy a top class striker too, but the lack of interest in Liverpool's unwanted squad members - making it impossible for Benitez to accumulate before he can speculate - means the manager must consider how best to allocate his remaining funds.

Alves' agent also expects a significant reward for negotiating a deal. As Seville's asking price increased, Benitez hoped the agent would amend his personal expectations. Thefact he'srefused to do so is a major reason for the transfer stalling.

There's little doubt Pennant is second choice, but pound for pound he represents better value than Alves, who'd swallow up funds set aside for another forward.

Liverpool first approached Birmingham three weeks ago when the Alves deal reached a dead end.

The Reds hoped allowing themselves to be linked with Damien Duff late last week might prompt Pennant to hurry Birmingham into listening to offers.

That backfired somewhat when Duff signed for Newcastle claiming he'd turned down Liverpool. He nevergot the chance to, and probably never would have, but the link was as much of Liverpool's making as Chelsea's.

Now a fresh approach is to be made for Pennant, with the Reds' hopeful their interest will prompt the 23-year-old to make it clear,in the same way as Bellamy, his heart is set on a move.

Sources in the Midlands believe, privately, Steve Bruce is already resigned to losing the winger and is merelyfighting for an acceptable fee.

"We are continuing to work to bring in more players, but it's difficult to say where we are at this moment, in depends on two or three factors," said Benitez.

"We are closer with some players, but I'm not the kind of manager who will say 'I want this player and I'll pay £20m to get him' if his value is only £10m. We don't have the money for doing this and we have a responsibility.

"We will try to sign the best players for us with the money we have.

"When you have experience, you know it's the same every year. Sometimes you have to wait until the last minute.

"I'm really happy with the squad now, but we will continue working and I think this week we can makeone or two signings. If not, we can wait a little longer."

This time last year Benitez left for Switzerland frustrated at the slow progress of the deal to bring his main target to Anfield.

Within a matter of days, Peter Crouch was wearing a red jersey and joining his team-mates in Switzerland.

Both the manager, and fans, will be hoping the sense of d?j? vu yields the same positive outcome, ensuring the empty seats reserved on the flight out are suitably filled on the return home

Like Bellamy I think this poor lad's reputation is being tarnished still over an incident that is in the past. He has paid his debt for what he's done and should now be allowed to get on with his footy. It is typical of the media in this country to continually try to drag it's sporting personnel into the gutter.

I belive he could be a very good signing for us; he's been at a top club and made his mistakes there so in theory he should now be a bit wiser as to what is expected of him at a big club.

(Wikipedia)
On 23 January 2005, Pennant was arrested and charged with drink-driving after crashing Spurs' Anthony Gardner's Mercedes into a lamp-post in Aylesbury, while serving a 16-month driving ban and uninsured. Gardner would later claim that he took the car without permission. Upon being arrested, Pennant initially gave his name as that of Arsenal teammate Ashley Cole. Pennant was found guilty of drink-driving whilst banned and although he was sentenced to 90 days in prison on 1 March he was released on parole after just 30 days. He immediately returned to playing for Birmingham, though he had to wear an electronic tag at all times, including while on the pitch. Despite his misbehaviour off the pitch, Birmingham manager Steve Bruce was keen to sign Pennant on a permanent basis, which he did on 25 April.

OK this is a fookin' brain-dead thing to do but he hasn't done anything foolish since and has kept his nose clean so I would be more than happy to see him try to make it at a big club again at Liverpool. He has got one major assett that we've been missing since we lost Macca - a decent RW - and for £6m is well worth a punt.
