POMPEY VS LIVERPOOL - Last game of the season

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby RichardLFC1 » Sun Apr 30, 2006 5:37 pm

Was gonna wait till the middlesborough v man utd match but the excitement of starting the post of the last game of the season got to much for me

Were level on points with united but there goals are 4 more better off

if boro can get a draw with united then it will be 80 - united
79- Liverpool

then it will come down to the last game of the season us v pompey
and manure v charlton

if charlton can get a draw then that will take united up to 82 and if we can get a win by any score v pompey we will be 83

am i being too optomistic ??? i think no

it's good in a way that pompey have already stayed up and have nothing to play for in this game.

now we can go there and absolutely tw@t them :D

sometimes tho when players dont have the pressure they play with a lot more freedom, and thats something we need to be wary of

i hope it'll be a walkover...but im sure it wont be.

the other side of the coin says, portsmouth having avoided the drop may well feel (for the first time in ages) that they can relax and play under no pressure at all..

of course that then comes down to how seriously LFC take the match in view of the cup final places.

for me, 3rd is a significant improvement this season. that, including 3 cup finals and a crack at the CL again, may deservedly be looked upon as a very successful one.

here's to plenty more.

IF man u draw with boro they'll be on 80 then an even bigger IF they draw with charlton they'll be on 81. the boro game is the only possibility of them dropping any points as they'll absolutely wipe the floor with charlton, even without rooney. they always seem to finish the season strongly and this time will be no different

so in my humble opinion we'll be lucky to get second as the only chance of doing so is by the mancs slipping up. benitez will more than likely not play the strongest possible team against portsmouth as he knows he's first choice plyers for the cup final and will want to rest them a bit more (especially kewell and his iffy thigh) while having a look at a couple of other options. portsmouth at their place is not exactly an easy game and definitely not a guaranteed three points. i don't buy the argument that they'll consider it job done now and that they'll take their foot (feet?) of the gas, in fact they'll possibly be more relaxed and express themselves more than they have for some time. i'd also guess there'll be one or two players wanting to make sure that they're not the one's who get sold on in the summer as there will more than likely be a bit of a clear out.

i don't know why but i'm expecting a bit of an anti-climax to the end of the domestic season (not counting the cup) and i reckon we'll get a draw.

I hope we go out and play the most attacking formation possible and go there to score many. It should be like the second half of a knockout match when we are losing 3-0. Hell, play a 3-4-4 (yup 3-4-4!)

I personally would rather nicking second from United rather than winning the cup. Automatic qualification means more time to prepare in pre-season and a lucrative overseas tour. Saha and horse face never looked that good as a partnership so they may slip up.

the players will be wary of injury ahead of the world cup.
Could be interesting that even though pompey have nothing to play for, egos could be bruised and tackles will fly.

I'd rather we played the fringe squad players and some reserves in this game.

I don't expect Robbie to start in this one either.  He's cup-tied and Rafa will be stoking up the competition between the other strikers for a place in the starting 11 in Cardiff.  As such, I think we'll see Nando pairing Crouch again, with Cisse on the right to start.

Like others, I'm not expecting Man U to slip up (although I'd be delighted if they did, of course).  Don't overlook the motivating force of pride: they've not only been beaten by the team they were supposed to be challenging for the title...they've been embarrassed!  I expect they'll have come away from the Bridge more determined than ever to finish the season strongly and solidify their grip on 2nd.

Frankly, that's not our concern.  We'll need to go to Pompey with the Cup Final in mind, which means protecting players carrying any knocks while evaluating potential starters for Cardiff.  As such, I suspect we'll field a strong albeit somewhat unorthodox line-up.

And, while Rafa will certainly want the players to take the opportunities that present themselves, I don't think he'll field a team whose primary aim will be to score a bucket full of goals in order to reduce the goal difference figures separating us and the Mancs.  You know our Rafa--easy does it!

I'm hoping for a nice 2-0 victory to end the league on high, to set us up well for Cardiff and to equal the club's clean sheet record from 1983-84.  And, if the Mancs stumble and let us in, so much the better!

Hopefully there will be a party atmosphere what with Pompey staying up and us having a fantastic season. The 2 best groups of supporters coming together and hopefully they can be rewarded with a good game of football.

I watched the first leg of the youth cup final, and despite the rave reviews about Paul Anderson, I don’t think he is ready to make the jump up to men’s football quiet yet. I think at earliest we will see him feature in the second half of next season.

Players like Dudek, Kromkamp, Hamann, Morientes and Cisse should start in order to help there World Cup chances. There is a week break before the FA Cup final so talk of resting is rubbish. I would personally go with this team:

                       Dudek

Kromkamp   Carragher    Agger     Warnock

Gerrard      Alonso        Hamann    Kewell (Riise if Kewell doesn’t make it)

               Morientes        Cisse

Subs

Fowler
Crouch
Sissoko
Hyypia
Reina

I dont know how this ones going to turn out, pompey could take their foot off the pedal as they are now safe and we could have an easy game or pompey could be even better than ever because they will be able to play with more freedom. If the former happens and we do win then man u will have to slip up big in their last 2 games for us to get 2nd so 2nd aint going to happen. Still i hope we can win the game and end on our highest points total ever in the prem, even if we end in 3rd.

It'll definitely be all guns blazing for the Portsmouth game. If Man U's results go in our favour, getting 2nd would mean automatic qualification for the main draw of the Champions League, whereas 3rd would mean we'd need to negotiate a 2 legged qualification tie.

It's completely Man U's to lose, but there's a hell of a lot going against them at this stage.

Boro are traditionally one of their bogey clubs, and are absolutely buzzing after the Bucharest victory. Rooney's out, which will seriously dent their creativity in attack, and obviously Charlton will want to give Curbishley a great send off.

I think the gods are with us at the minute. Man U have got two very tricky games coming their way, and I'm betting on them dropping points in both. If they get two draws, and we beat Pompey, we get 2nd.

It doesn't matter which Pompey team show up as we are capable of beating both of them even with our '2nd' eleven.

With all hands on deck however and 2nd spot to play for, I think Saturdays lesson will be learned and we'll be full of focus and determination to finish the season on a high.
