the last time riley reffed this fixture he sent hyypia off after three minutes and we lost 4-0. i think he only gave manure 9 penalties that season.

ronaldo's appeal against his red card has been rejected which is a boost for us. although i think he's an overrated showpony, he's still a class act on his day. i think park will probably come in for him and he's not in ronaldo's class.

Taken from Skysports:

Cristiano Ronaldo has seen his appeal for wrongful dismissal following the red card picked up in Manchester United's derby defeat at Manchester City rejected by The Football Association.

The Portuguese will now serve a three-match ban and will miss United's matches against Burton Albion (FA Cup), Liverpool (Premiership) and Blackburn (Carling Cup).

Ronaldo received his marching orders from referee Steve Bennett in controversial circumstances at The City of Manchester Stadium.

Having appeared to have been fouled by Stephen Jordan, Ronaldo's ire was stoked by Bennett's failure to award a free kick in the United man's favour.

Ronaldo then retaliated and launched into a tackle on Andy Cole and, although no contact was made with the former United striker, Bennett deemed the tackle to have been reckless and produced a straight red card.

United appealed but their plea has fallen on deaf ears and Ronaldo will be now sidelined at a critical point in the season.

To be honest- with or without him i don't think it'd make a difference to the result. The tide is definietly turning and i believe that we'll take 3 points there.

glad to see the FA have stuck to their guns on ronaldo, it was a horrible challenge which stevie wonder could see was meant with real malice and intent so imo the red card was thoroughly correct

shame rooney will be there (as i understand it he serves his suspension against burton albion :( ) cos with that fat fecker on the park anything could happen. we've got the talent at the back to keep him quiet most of the game but like it or not he'll get a couple of opportunities on goal and he doesn't need much to make it count

the form book suggests we will be favourites for this game but as we all know this is like playing the bluesh*te where the form book goes out the window. it will be a tough game and i will cringe every time sissoko goes in for the challenge (i would be tempted to drop him in favour of hamann if he's fully fit) but i have a sneaky suspicion we will come away with the 3 points especially if kewell can turn it on like he has done the last month or so

i'll go for 0-1 with crouch earning himself an eternal place in the heart of every liverpool fan with the ultimate LFC accessory, a goal at old trafford

Luis Garcia will miss this weekend's clash at Manchester United as he continues to recover from a knee injury.
The Liverpool midfielder has had the injury assessed by a specialist in Spain and will now continue his recovery under the guidance of the Reds' medical staff at Melwood.

Garcia has already missed the FA Cup tie at Luton and Saturday's league victory over Tottenham, but it is hoped he will be back in action before the end of the month.

A club spokesman said: "Luis travelled to Spain to see a knee specialist who advised him to continue his rehabilitation at Melwood.

"It is expected he will be out of action for a further ten days."

Bad news Luis Garcia won't be in the squad. I wouldn't have started him anyway as his contribution against the better sides is normally quite poor but he's always an option if you need a goal or something different. Quite a loss unfortunately.

I know exactly whats going to happen in this game, hopefully Rafa does aswell. Manchester United will come out kicking everything and intimidating Riley. They will play dirty and unfairly and very hard to try and win this game. It will finish 1-1, 0-0 or 1-0 Liverpool, obviously i'm hoping for the latter.

The thing is, when Manchester United come up against a better side domestically they do kick there way through a game, we MUST expect this, stand up to it, give twice as good as we get, close down in packs as we have been doing, be ruthless in the tackle then the rest will follow. Gerrard, Alonso and Carragher have a massive part to play ensuring we win the Physical and mental battle in this game. If anyone of them hides or has a slight off game we'll struggle to win the match.

I'm going to go for 1-0 Liverpool, Harry Kewell in the second half. However, i woudln't be suprised if it finishes 1-1 or 0-0. Can't see any other score than that really. All of which aren't the worst results in the world.

Thats providing Riley has a good game and doesn't do what he usually does up there.

yeah, i agree, united always start the rough stuff when their backs are to the wall or up against a side that they feel are capable of outplaying them. in recent seasons they often threw phil neville into the midfield against arsenal as a stopgap measure just to upset the applecart.
even in the mid 90`s when newcastle had a superb pure footballing side united turned those matches into grim battles with the likes of keane and ince kicking everything that moved.
as stu mentions its a favourite tactic of fergusons and has been for years, we`ll have to be up for it.
if riley doesnt give united a pen i`ll eat my hat.

Very worried that Riley is the ref, he ruined the game a few seasons ago for us. Im quitetly confident that we can come away with the 3 points on sunday but it will be close.

We looked pretty solid against a good spurs team last saturday and if we play the same and keep it tight I think we could nick it.

Then i can really look forward to coming into work on Monday :D

In fairness, if UTD start the rough stuff against us they have met their match. Fletcher against Sissoko?

The only thing is that they play it rough and get it back twicefold the ref could buckle under pressure.

I think if we start hard and push the pace we will score early, as UTD's defence is in serious trouble and they'll leak goals if pushed. Most teams are afraid to push them, however, because of their threat on the counter.

We could go 2-0 up early and defend it. I don't see UTD coming back from 2-0 down.

agree jbg. we're no longer the soft touch we were a couple of seasons ago. just look at the bolton game the other week for example. sissoko, gerrard and alonso aren't afraid to put their foot in if needs be and this is the reason that i wouldn't be surprised if they start with alan smith and john o shea in central midfield with fletcher on the right.

well I'm a sceptical fecker, we'll get kicked up and down the park but the ref will be p1ss weak, and I'm gonna look for odds on a penalty for man u and a liverpool sending off, probably Sissoko. 1-1 draw as a result. oh and a ' Mike Riley is a pr1ck' thread come 6 bells on Sunday.

Neil, you're probably spot on lad.

I could definately see something like that happening, which is a massive concern.

Riley being the ref is a major worry imo, cant the F.A see he has a history of giving penalties in their favour, about 8 in one season a couple of years ago wasn't it ?
Including 2 against us in a 4 -0 drubbing when he also sent Hyypia off after about 3 minutes.
Now i know they cant stop him reffing united games, but to put him in charge of such a massive game is a joke.
I only hope the players are disciplined enough to not get drawn into anything stupid, because as JBG has already suggested with the crowd reactions to any challenge our players make Riley will definately wilt under the pressure.
I am also pretty optimistic about this game, as long as Rafa approaches it in the right way.
We need to keep hold of the early possesion and try and score early to quiten the crowd, it might be a cliche that but the crowd are always a major influence in games like this.
If we score early i think we will pick up a similar result to Man citys on saturday, we have players who can hit them on the break.
I hope Stevie Gerrard scores at old trafford to continue his brilliant goal scoring form this season, and just to see his celebration...lets hope he copies Fowler's.

Does anyone know when Sissoko would depart to the African Nations Cup to play for Mali?
