Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

yeah to sell him before signing a new deal would be catastrophic. i said all along that i thought he would sign although i could understand his frustration.

Whatever we can do to keep Owen.
When he leaves it'll be the first sign of our club falling apart, and I mean worse than 4th

To Owens credit i dont think he would ever walk on a free, he ahs a year left and if he doesnt resign then we sell him, simple as that. I could quite easily see him going to Barca in the summer. Hopefully though he can stay and win the title with the team he wants to win it with, us!

owen is still only 24. he's three or four years off his peak still. he's got a lot he still wants to achieve at liverpool before he ever thinks of going abroad. if he can stay clear of these niggling injuries then i'm sure he will be scoring 30+ next season.

I actaully heard on the radio today that the figure is slightly over £100grand a week, which is absolutely outrageous money!

For a player of Owen's World status and not forgetting the merchandising he brings to Liverpool FC, 100K a week isn't as high a figure as you think. I heard OWen speaking a  few months ago and he pitched it just right saying "this is the most important contract of my career" If he does stay we have to change the way we play cos defenders have sussed our tactics out and Owen has suffered more than most as a result. Its my opinion that if he doesn't ign then LFC have no alternative but to sell him preferably to a foreign club as Ex LFC players have a habit of coming back to haunt us !!!!!!!

I'm not saying Owen is not worth the money, but it is a savage amount none the less!

i just think it's a bit stupid to throw our wage structure out the window for the sake of one player. nobody is bigger than lfc.

It is I agree JBG but if you want to KEEP and ATTRACT players of his ability then you have to bite the bullet and pay the going rate. What Liverpool have failed to do consistently over the last 5 years is not so much pay players well but to buy well in the first place. Diouf, Diao, Heskey, Biscan and possiblty others have been expensive in the respect that we haven't had anything like value for money for these players ! Contracts such as OWens attract interest from other players and whilst we dont want to attract gold diggers , it does send the right signals to the right players, hopefuilly we can identify a few and sign them .....Walk on ......

Good arguments all round. It is a lot of money BUT thats the price these days.
Sure we could get a decent striker for a lot less than we would be paying Owen, but it wouldn't be Micheal Owen, we're talking reputations here. Are we gonna be serious players in the football elite ? or just also rans, making up the numbers, a club that can't hang onto their best assets ? Make no mistake friends Liverpool are at a major crossroad in their history. Letting a player of Owens stature slip away is not the signal we want to be sending.Yes, no player is bigger than the club but sometimes a player and his reputation are vital to a club.:)

Keep Owen
at all costs.

Hehasnt really had a bad season.
In the league he has 14 goals + he was injured for three months.
Van Nis has 18 and his only been injured the last while.
Owen will score another few goals this season.

He is worth 90k year.

no player on this earth is worth that much, i would not mind if we had owen all year but he is prone to injury. I say sell him for something ridiculous and buy a top striker who will give his all fot every minute he is on the pitch.

Erm ? and how much do you think a TOP striker would cost ?
Get real, if you want world class (which owen is despite injuries and relatively poor season) you're gonna have to pay for it.
