Owen - 90k a week to sign

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

just read that liverpool have FINALLY agreed in principle a new contract which owen will sign in may. what disturbs me is that the new contract will virtually smash our entire wage structure. owen is reportedly going to be offered a £90,000 a week contract which would make him one of the top earners in the premiership. however, if we have to break the bank to keep him then do it because everyone knows that the guy is world class and a vital part of liverpools future. :)

90k a week is way too much. Owens does not deserve 0.09 mill * 52 = 4,68 mio a year.

I wouldn't believe everything you read but if thats what is costs to keep him then so what. It'd easily cost 5mil per annum to buy a striker of his quality and keep him (including fee and wages etc.)

he is not worth 90k a week considering his form of the last two seasons, we shouldnt be risking financial ruin for the sake of one player! maybe if he was hitting 25 a season maybe, but owen has never even managed 20 in the league.

if you ask me this just show owens commitment to the club if he will only sign for 90k a week. Stevie g signed for about 60 when he could of went to chelsea and got more.

Owen has cut a lonely figure at Anfield this season
Liverpool have opened preliminary contract talks with Michael Owen in an attempt to tie up the England striker's future before Euro 2004.

Club chief executive Rick Parry met Owen's agent Tony Stephens a week ago to discuss a new long-term deal.

Owen, 24, only has one year left on his current £60,000-a-week contract and would be free to negotiate a Bosman-style free transfer away from Anfield.

He has already been linked with moves to Real Madrid and Chelsea this season.

Ideally, Liverpool would like Owen to sign a new deal before he heads off to Portugal with England for the European Championship, where his stock could rise further with a successful tournament.

To that end, Liverpool have scheduled further talks with the player's representative in May.

The Anfield board are said to be ready to smash the club's wage structure to make Owen's the highest paid player in Liverpool's history on £90,000-a-week.

However, Owen has previously insisted his main concern over signing a new deal is not about the money on offer to him but whether the club are ready to spend big to win honours.

And the forward is also keen for manager Gerard Houllier to change the way the team play, with Owen receiving support from a regular strike partner and the midfield area.

it's an important point about service. without gerrard in the side he'd hardly get a kick. the midfield just don't provide enough. and the last thing you want to do is play michael owen as a lone striker.

Surely his form is down to the lack of service he has from the midfield.

The only service he gets is from SG and he can't possibly provide the defene splitting pass every time. Put owen in a team with more creative players and watch him go.

Lets just hope that he does sign and that we buy creative players in the summer not another list of flops.

I don't mind what we pay him as long as he signs another deal.

We should get him to sign the new contract and then worry whether we should sell him or not.Without a long term contract his transfer value is almost zero at this stage as he will soon be available on a free transfer.Tie him to a long contract and his value is around the twenty million mark.

A striker of Owens quality is worth the money mentioned. Pay peanuts and you get monkeys.
The point about him not being at his best lately could be said about the entire squad (maybe not Stevie G) .Once again Fooliers tactics are brought into the question.Owen wants to stay but wants to WIN. Just like the rest of us.

if he is not ready to sign for a reasonable amount of money, can we sell him?

Buy Cisse, two midfielders  good ones GH get good ones ya prat,,,, and a defender and have a go at the champions league from that point of view,,,

What I would hate to see happen is a couple of mid rate midfielders come in,,,be mid rate and listen to GH make excuses for another year,,,,,,, :(

What happens if Owen sits on his contract , refusing all offers and then walks away on a free ?
We need to sign the deal , if he ever leaves it will then be on our terms :)
