EURO CHAMPS ARE BRITAIN'S BEST SUPPORTED CLUB
Mark Platt 19 July 2005
Liverpool are now considered to be the best supported British club across the world, according to a leading sports consultants company.
A report published today by German-based Sport+Markt AG has revealed that following the recent Champion League success our worldwide fan base has increased by 10 million.

It goes on to say that we can now boast 18 million supporters across the world, a figure bettered only by Real Madrid (32 million) and Barcelona (23 million) in Europe.

Sport+Markt AG's top nine best supported European clubs

1. Real Madrid
2. Barcelona
3. LIVERPOOL
4. Juventus
5. Milan
6. Manchester United
7. Arsenal
8. Bayern Munich
9. Chelsea

Really man? 10 million? That's quite a lot. However, I don't think this number represents "loyal" supporters. I might be wrong, but it's just quite difficult to belive that only one conquest can increse this much the number of supporters.

Setting another example, São Paulo before nineties had the seventh biggest fan base in Brazil. However, after 1991, 1992 and 1993 (when São Paulo won EVERYTHING, including the World Club Championships 92 and 93) the fan base became the third in Brazil.  However, it wasn't quick...it was a whole generation that grew up watching São Paulo conquests.

You may know, World Club Championship is every important in South America, and I believe that São Paulo fan base in Brazil will have another boost if we win it for the third time (considering that we have already won Libertadores Cup this year - the Champion's League for South America).

Can some of you new people from South America tell me if Saprissa are any good.

Gonzul Morado: I wouldn't worry about these comments. Supporters from other teams sing songs about the poverty of Scousers to try and annoy the Liverpool fans.

If we win, then thats another trophy. If we don't, I won't give half a sh!te, unless we manage to come back without any adverse effects. Just think about it, I would rather obtain full points during the 4 game Christmas schedule rather then winning this mickey mouse cup.

Ok i won't...sorry again....what's Scousers...a part of Liverpool?

About Saprissa...like i said before....against Sidney we did'nt pla our best game.....but we still got the victory...know playing against a much better team as Liverpool...it will bring up the best of our players.....

We do have good technique....but we dont have the physicall capability you do....i hope it's gonna be a close match..and we're confident of getting a positive experience and result....

Beware if the match gets to penalty kicks...we haven't lost in penalties since 1989...since then we have won 10 series....and we have a very good keeper

I don´t know too much about it but they play (and won) a tournament with some very good mexicans teams (CONCACAF´s champions league or equivalent) so I believe they have some very good players.

yes i agree that the 10 million supporters who we gained after winning the champions league arent really supporters, but i suppose every successful football club has its glory supporters. The figures dont really suprise me because its the biggest club competition in the world in terms of the amount of people that watch it. Its televised in basically every country in the world.

You know..before the goes to Europe, the Brazilian stars spend some time in Brazil..Did you forget it? and there are many good players here that you don't know..

Of course the best players finish the season here and goes to Europe..but we always have new good players..just like any other country..

Brazilian teams are not weak..even without your best players, which goes to europe..

Sao Paulo, for example, plays 6 times against Real Madrid in his history, and won 4 (lose the 2 others)

What i can say is that spain, italy and germany knows the brazilian players better than you, englishs...but not so much..

REINA: WE WANT TO WIN AND WE CAN WIN

Pepe Reina believes Liverpool can send a message out to the rest of the footballing world if they are crowned the best team on the planet over the next few days.
Victory over Deportivo Saprissa in Yokohama tomorrow will take Rafa Benitez's side into Sunday's final, where they will stand just one game away from becoming world champions for the first time in their history.

Reina admits it's an unusual experience to be playing so far away from home in the middle of the domestic campaign, but he insists it's a competition the Reds are determined to win.

He told Liverpoolfc.tv: "It is an important competition for us. We want to win it and we can win it.

"The team is doing very well at the moment and we want to carry that on in Japan. We are going to take this tournament very seriously because there's another title on offer and if we can win it then it'll be our second trophy already this season and our third this year.

"The manager will prepare us properly for the games and, although we didn't know too much about the other teams before we travelled out here, I'm sure we'll be well briefed before kick-off."

Striker Djibril Cisse is desperate to be involved in first team action tomorrow having had to be content with a place on the substitute's bench over recent weeks.

Just fourteen months after picking up an injury which could have wrecked his career, the French ace is now hoping to end 2005 with another winners medal.

Cisse said: "Football can change so quickly. Just over one year ago I had a bad injury and this weekend I could be celebrating winning another medal after the Champions League and Super Cup victories.

"We're all really excited about this tournament. We're happy to be here and we'll do our best to win it."

Benitez on... the World Club Championship

"For me it is a challenge. I want to win games and win trophies. As a manager, the players are more important than you. You can make all the plans, but it is up to them to win. I will prepare them as best as I can for the tournament and hopefully we will be successful. This is a very big tournament and we are going to try and do our best to win it. It deserves to be a big tournament with extremely tough qualification: how else would you measure the best? Whoever wins will be worthy champions. It's a beautiful trophy and we want to bring it back to Anfield.
