São Paulo FC has conquested the World twice

Source: FIFA.com - http://www.fifa.com/en/news/feature/0,1451,108804,00.html

Together with the Toyota Cup, 13 different South American clubs had won the "world's best" title, compared with twelve European sides.

Among this year's six representatives, Brazil's Sao Paulo are the only team that can claim to have been world champions. The South Americans lifted the Toyota Cup in 1992 and 1993 under the direction of Tele Santana and with a quality side headed by Rai and Cafu.

Origin - World Club Championship

The idea to hold a championship to decide the world?s best team was dreamt up in the late 1950s. During those post-WWII years when sport was helping the world come together and soothe painful memories of conflict, football in Europe and South America continued its global dominance.

So as competition club football grew up with the introduction of the European Cup (1955/5) and the Copa Libertadores (1960), it was only natural that the Intercontinental Cup should be a match between clubs from these two distant continents.

In fact it was Real Madrid president Santiago Bernabeu, whose Spanish side had won the first five editions of the new European tournament, to first propose staging a match to decide the best club side in the world. From then on there could be no arguments - it would show once and for all who were the true champions of the world.

São Paulo's goalkeeper and FIFA Member (president of CBF) make fun of FIFA World Club Championship 2000 won by a São Paulo rival:

"-The Intercontinental and Toyota Cup were very important. The football was always dominated by South America and Europe. So, they are all legit World Champions. Corinthians was also champion, but Fifa was still implating the World Club Championship. It was made a  sample of no value in 2000 and now in 2005, Fifa came up with the correct formula. In 2000, the teams were all invited. These which will participate in 2005 are all champions."

Liverpool: superstitions and shared aims

Source: FIFA.com http://www.fifa.com/en....=111438

The FIFA Club World Championship TOYOTA Cup was unveiled in Liverpool's Trophy Room on Wednesday 16 November by Dr. Urs Linsi, FIFA General Secretary and Mr. Geoffrey Thompson, the chairman of the English Football Association and Mr. Benitez hopes that it will return to the same place in little over a month's time.

"It is a beautiful trophy," he smiled.  "However, I am not going to touch it as I don't want to tempt fate. I'd rather touch it as a winner in Japan.  As a manager, winning every game and every trophy is a challenge for me.  We are delighted to have the chance to win the FIFA Club World Championship and we are going to do our best to win it.

"In a lot of interviews people have asked me if I will select the best team and my answer is 'Of course.'  We will be going to Japan with the best team and we will try to be as fit as possible for the games over there and the reason is simple: I want to win another trophy for Liverpool Football Club."

Club captain and England international Steven Gerrard told the packed media conference that he shared the same view as his manager.

"From a player's point of view, we have a responsibility to get good results," he said.  "Therefore we have a responsibility to go to Japan and bring the trophy home.  We have a tremendous fanbase in Japan and I am sure they are looking forward to seeing us win the competition.

"It is also providing the team with the opportunity to get a winner's medal.  As a footballer, you want to win every game you play in and this is a unique opportunity for us to become World Champions.  All of the players are looking forward to it as we believe that winning could provide a real confidence boost for the rest of the season."

For Mr. Rick Parry, Liverpool's Chief Executive, winning the FIFA Club World Championship is a matter of pride.

"It is a great privilege for us to be taking part in the FIFA Club World Championship as the Champions of Europe," he smiled.  "It is certainly a very difficult competition to qualify for and it is one that we will be taking seriously.  The message to our friends at FIFA and Japan is that we will be trying our best to win.  We would love to bring the trophy back home.  We have, of course, taken part in the TOYOTA CUP on two occasions - 1981 and 1984 (losing to Flamengo and Independiente) - and it is the one trophy that we have never succeeded in winning.  It would be nice to put the record straight this time."

Yes we have other threads, but IMHO he took a good time doing that and is worth a look! better that than a one liner or yet another bashing thread.

It should be a good experience for our boys.  I remember watching us beaten badly against Flamenco.  I couldn't believe what I was watching.  I think it was 4-1, which was unthinkable in those days.

It worries me that we won't relish coming back to England afterwards.  We'll have lost our league momentum and will be constantly playing catchup.  I don't think this means we shouldn't go to Japan, but I hope we win it and that gives us a mid-season boost!
