Riise - Underused this season?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby ivor_the_injun » Thu Apr 08, 2004 3:16 am

I know his form wasn't great earlier in the season, but I'd like to see Riise get a good run in the side. Defensively he's a bit limited, but he has great instincts for building attacks from the back, and I'm sure he'd be good for a few goals. The point's been made several times that there aren't enough goals in our side outside the front two, and seeing as though we have a player who has proved willing to get forward and hammer a few in, it seems weird that he's not getting more matches.

And if Finnan does start getting his act together, would there be mileage in trying Riise on the left side of midfield? In a 4-3-3 with Harry floating behind the front two, I think he could really do some damage. Particularly in his first season, he looked to me more like a left-sided midfielder being played as a wing-back than the other way around, so I don't even think it'd be a case of playing him out of position.

I too think that Riise should be getting his game and he does score a few goals. I wouldnt like to see him left-wing , leave him at left-back , he'll go forward.

Im not too sure which games you have seen John Arne in since his first (and pretty impressive) season at LFC.

If you think that getting forward means running to the half way line with the ball, looking up, seeing nothing on and then shrugging your shoulders before launching the long ball then you are seriously mistaken.

Riise simply does not do it consistently. The choice is a solid defender who doesnt get forward too much (Carra) or a dodgy befender who doesnt get forward too much (Riise). I know who gets my vote.

Ive always said we should have risse at left back and carragher on the right. Both of them are so much better than finnan. Risse had a bad patch, but with a decent run of games in the first team he'll soon come good

We need a decent balance defensively and as everyone is aware, Hyypia and Henchoz are not the quickest. Carragher adds a bit of defensive solidity at the back, Riise can defend but I would rate him lowest defensively of the left-back options. On form he is great going forward and would make a good wing-back in a 3-5-2 or a useful left-wing

Riise is a class act going forward and his confidence must be shot to pieces now.How would you feel being dropped for that stick traore? ???? ????He does get caught out defensively but so do all of the defenders,it is hard to look good when opposition has most of the ball week after week and attack as a team.Unlike houlliers pathetic tactics which means 3 or 4 players only get into the final 3rd.
Smith to Shankly:My thigh is a bit sore, but I think I could play.
Shankly to Fagan:Tell him,Joe.He has got no chance of playing.
Smith to Fagan:Tell him to sod off.It is not his leg,it's mine.
Shankly to Smith:Oh no son.You are wrong, son. It is not your leg.
It is Liverpool Football Club's leg.

Riise is brilliant because he is a defender who can make overlapping runs, score goals and defend well.

Houllier has ruined every LFC player except Baros and Gerrard, maybe Owen as well. Every other player's confidence is gone Heskey, Riise, Hyypia, Henchoz, Dudek and Murphy's
