Rafa won't take sh!t

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I'm surprised that this hasn't been posted (then again knowing this forum, anything that is ''positive'' in anyway is a rarity)

Rafa admits that he and the rest of the coaching staff need to improve however he also says that the players need to take games like the one yesterday a bit more seriously.

Full article:
Rafael Benitez is demanding that his team improve and said that he won't tolerate another showing like the first half display they produced at Fulham at Saturday again, that largely led to their downfall and a 2-0 defeat.
Benitez had his squad in at Melwood on Sunday to watch a re-run of the Fulham game and he told his players the first half just wasn't and isn't acceptable for Liverpool Football Club.

Benitez said: "We had more determination in the second half, but the first half was the same kind of performance away from home as last year.

"Everyone must understand these kinds of games are important. It's acceptable to play at the same level as Chelsea and lose, but it's not acceptable to play Fulham, whom we know we are better than, and come away with nothing.

"It was as though we didn't understand the importance of the game in the first half. Only in the second was there a response, and then I felt it was a question of time whether we would score, but their keeper made a lot of saves.

"Last season we made a lot of mistakes and I thought we were learning from them. We've started strongly in other away games and I didn't expect to see us play like this again after last year.

"This is our first defeat away this year and we can't afford to make the same mistakes in future. It's important the players understand we can't approach games in this way."

Benitez says everyone has to improve including the manager himself and his staff as everyone is in it together.

"It's not just the players who need to improve, but all of us," said Benitez. "I include the staff, the players, everyone.

"We all know we need to change the attitude, particularly after European games. Yesterday we all spoke and watched the match again. The performance of the team was bad in terms of the aggressiveness of the players.

"We had a lot of the ball, and controlled the play, but didn't show enough until the second half. We've had these problems before after a Champions League game.

"We've all seen the big mistake we made with our first half performance and now we need to correct it."

Rafael Benitez has admitted he told his players their first-half performance at Fulham was not acceptable but felt they responded well in the second-half and gave a much better show of themselves.
The Liverpool manager insists he wasn't happy with the movement of his players during a poor first-half display but was keen to point out the second-half display was very good at Craven Cottage.

"Always when you lose a match you must be very disappointed,"! he revealed. "We played bad in the first half. We controlled the game but in the first half we didn't go forward with enough intensity.

"The players need to know the second-half at Fulham is the performance we want at Liverpool, not the first half which was bad.

"In attack in the first-half we did bad movement and the players didn't move enough, but we also needed to give them better chances as well. We need to support the strikers a lot better when they get the ball.

"We have been speaking a lot about getting crosses into the box for Crouch and Morientes and we need to get to the by-line and cross good balls. We are working on that and I am confident we will get goals very soon.

"Against Anderlecht we had 18 shots at goal so we do create chances. We just need to finish them off a lot better."

I'm glad that Benitez is giving the players a kick up the ar$e and whilst Benitez himself is not perfect[as he pointed out] he has the balls to admit it and do something about it.

I really have no idea what he means by "controlling the game". Knocking it about between the midfield and defence maybe? Strangling the game in the middle of the park?

For me, controlling the game should be about asserting your superiority on your opponents by outworking them and out-passing them in order to create chances. We're not really doing any of that, and that's why we're not winning games.

I think he means controlling the game by passing the ball and having more possession therefore being the ones dictating play and what happens.

Surely if we're creating 18 chances per match we ARE controlling the game!?! We battered Anderlect, then dropped off and allowed them to come at us.

OK... I have my positive pants on today...

I think we are controlling the games...  We are just not putting the ball in the net.  At the chance of repeating myself, out attempts on goal is far greater than last year, we just can't finish at the moment.

That could be one of 2 reasons

1.  Our forwards are all going through a bit of a drought (something that happens to every striker at some poit in the season) all at the same time... or

2.  Our forwards are not good enough

If we had taken more of the chances created, we would not all be worried about the "poor" start to the season, Raffa would be a hero and the "mighty Liverpool Football Club, Champions of Europe" would finally be mounting an attack on the Premiership.  Look at Chelsea, in general they don't create as many chances as us but they do score more, and at the end of the day, thats what its all about.

Of our strikers, Cisse, is still ahead of time after his injury last year and is probably short of confidence, I agree Raffa is probably not helping him by playing him out wide, but he needs someone in that position, and against Fulham I thought he did well. I would prefer to see him in his natural position and give him the chance to knock a few in.

Morientes, rated as one of the best strikers in the world....  we where all made up when we signed him, BUT he is not doing it at the moment.. how long do we give him?

Crouch - I think is doing the job that Raffa has asked him to do, he is there to win balls and bring other players in.. he is doing that, so I don't think we should be too critical.

Ping Pong - Hasn't had a chance.... I would rather see him tried on the right wing and play Cisse and Crouch up front, tonight could be the perfect time to try that out... but I don't think it will happen

Mellor - Sell him to the highest bidder!

Whilst the transfer window was open, Raffa must have looked at his squad, and thought there where goals in this team, without doupt.  Because of this he concentrated on other positions (apart from MO) and I think we have a better squad with more options to cope with a very busy season.  This is a move in the right direction.  Reina is better than Dudek, Sissoko is proving to be a great player, ready to step into Hammans shoes, Crouch is doing what he is asked to do and gives us another option.  I am dissapointed with Zendon, he looked good in pre season, but hasn't doen it yet in the Premiership.

We must stay confident thsat the we will start taking more chances.  Once the goals come, and they will come, life as a Liverpool Fan will get better.
Our job is simple, to support the club, not just parts of the club that are easy to support, but every one who plays a part, that includes ALL players.  We are stronger when we are all walking in the same direction. Walk On

All our players are OK ... Nando, Cisse, PC and Sinama Pol. are all players but Liverpool's 4-5-1 doesn't work in EPL . We need 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 .

It's not the formation, it's the end product and the players who don't take games seriously like the one against Fulham. They woke up in the second half

We may not be happy with the way the team is playing but neither is Rafa. Put it this way. At least Rafa, unlike Houllier, actually comes out after the game and criticises the players and tells them when their performance is not good enough. Players only get 'protection' from him when they deserve it but he is not afraid to say that they need to buck their ideas up. Under Houllier we just got two years of spin and excuses for what can only be described as the most turgid football I have ever had to watch as a Liverpool supporter.

We have made an unspectacular start to the season, but the great Liverpool sides of the past did as well sometimes, and bearing in mind that nobody bar the Chavs have made a blistering start to this season then we really shouldn't worry too much. Rafa is a winner and he will not tolerate this sh#t for long.

I just can't believe that we haven't even reached Christmas yet and the 'Rafa Out' brigade are starting to make their first rumblings. Please look at the bigger picture and get behind the team instead ofd slagging them off after every defeat and praising them to the hilt after every win. Regardless of what some people say, this is not the nature of being a football fan, this is the nature of being a glory hunter. Support the team and the manager and give him time. I think he deserves that after winning number five in his first season.
