Carra: keane is better than gerrard?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

jamie carragher has named his greatest ever XI for 4-4-2 magazine, he interestingly has opted for roy keane in central midfield (instead of team mate gerrrard) and neville southall in goal. Here are his team:

Southall, Cafu, Baresi, Desailly, Maldini, Souness, Keane, Zidane, Barnes, Van Basten, Dalglish.

Except for Cafu, it seems to me Carraguer doesn't like much the south American football. :D

wow, im very shocked, keane at his best has never been better than gerrard,he can,t pass better than gerrard, slower than gerrard, less drive than gerrard, never a bigger goal threat than gerrard, can,t cross a ball better than gerrard, and i have never seen keane ever dribble past a player like gerrard can do with ease.no contest gerrard is and will be a far superior player in every area

This is my team. Pick the players from late 80s to now (from when i started to watch soccer till now).

                         Shmicheal
                           Baresi
                Cafu    Nesta  Maldini
                          Gerrard
                 Figo  Maradona  Zidane
                    Van  Basten
                                     Rush

Only 2 LFC players.........

1)Shmicheal - reason why the scums were so good...i have never seen a goalie make so many 1-on-1 saves before.
2)Baresi - no comments needed - best sweeper in the last decade
3)Cafu - no comments needed - best right back in the last decade
4)Nesta - Currently the best centreback in the world for me
5)Maldini - no comments needed - best left back in the last decade
6)Gerrard - I am putting him as a defensive midfielder becos of the talent in front of him.
7)Figo - no comments needed - best right winger in the last decade
8)Maradona - Awesome player. The best ever player in the world.
9)Zidane - Best player in the last decade
10)MVB - The most complete striker in europe.
11)Rush - The best goalscorer i have seen.

b)Rush - The best damn goalscorer i have seen (just edges fowler)

Do not "Pele" , "Cruyff" and "Beckenbauer" mean something to any of you? :)

To me i agree with Carra that Keane was better in his prime than Gerrard is at this moment in time. But Gerrard is better than Keane right now and Gerrard has a lot of time to keep improving and become a better player than Keane was in his day.

if we had signed roy keane when we had the chance in the early nineties, that period would have been entirely different.

all keane does is show leadership ,tackling and sideways passing,if you think that is better than gerrard i am shocked.gerrard is a freak of nature,he has every attribute of a modern footballer,he has no weakness and can do it all. pass  "and not just sideways"score ,cross, tackle, dribble, leadership, stamina shall i go on.i would like to have seen roy keane play right wing and swing beckhamesque crosses with ease or play at right back in extra time against one of the quickest wingers in europe.no contest gerrard everytime even when keane was in his prime

The guys who are doubting the ability of Keanne are surely allowing their hatred of Manure to cloud their judgement. At his best (which he clearly no- longer is but is still a fantastic player) Keanne was a wonderful footballer. Right up there in my view with Graeme Souness as the best midfield player of his generation. Gerrard has the potential to get there but the road ahead is long and rocky.

what do you mean the road is long and rocky for him to be better than keane,he,s already there or probably has  passed a keane in his prime by now.

Well it's all about opinions mate and yours is worth at least as much as mine. My suspicion is we are never going to agree because I think you are miles wide of the mark. Stll like I say there's nothing wrong with disagreement.
I would say this though, there was a time during the late 90's when Keanne was that good that I got the feeling that if we'd have had him rather than Man U then we would've won the title. Now we HAVE got Gerrard so I hope you are calling it right and he wins us the title.

Keane was a fantastic player when he was younger, he's still a good player today however he's not as as good as he was. But Carra is right, despite the fact that Keane plays for McDonalds Buccaneers you have to acknowledge his ability.
