Warnock: our best left back? - In my opinion

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

In my opinion Stephen warnock is our best left back at LFC. He should be given the nod over Traore as Djimi makes too many mistakes as it proved for example in the first minute of the Champions league. Warnock needs a run in the team and I think we have a player who can not only defend but also get forward and cross a ball. What do you guys think?

well it looks like benitez agrees with you because he has started more games than traore, also warnock is better going forward as well and the modern day fullback attacks and defends,

im always a bit worried when djimi's playing - hes capable of anything (remeber THAT o.g.)
i would prefer to start warnock of the two. however, id probably play riise ahead of both of them.

I think Warnock should be given a chance. At the moment we need someone who can do the basics first and foremost though which is defend as Riise doesn't have the discipline and is lacking defensively and Traore is just lacking.

i do think that warnock is a much better player than traore. he shows more composure on the ball and can attack and defend well too. i feel warnock deserves a chance at the liverpool first team just due to the fact that he has had so many injuries, yet keeps on fighting back jst to play in a liverpool shirt. NOW THATS COMMITMENT!
however i do feel riise is wasted at left back and is better in midfield as last season proved. but the only problem with this is that if warnock plays at left back and riise at left midfield, where does that leave zenden/gonzalez? ???

I still think that, with the arrival of Bolo Zenden, we will be seeing a lot of Riise in the left back possition. If anyone is a modern full back at our club it has to be Riise. He's fast, his shots have become the stuff of legend, he can defend and he can cross. As long as Zenden can defend, and he can, the two could form a better partnership than Cole and Pires. As for Warnock and Traore, I think that Warnock has more confidence and a wider repetoire when it comes to the left side, although Djimi is the better tackler.

maybe we're coming close to maureens philosophy of 2 players for every position ??

warnock/riise       LB
finnan/josemi       RB
zenden/gonzales  LM
stevie/xabi/hamann/momo  CM
4 strikers

we're gettin there i think - especially when rafas main aim now is to add a centre back to carra/hypia/zak  and another RM to compete with garcia. (hopefully having gotten rid of nunez)

go rafa go  :bowdown

I have a feeling that Riise will be playing a lot of games at left back this year, even though I personally think he's better in midfield.  I don't know what the deal is with Djimi, he's improved but still a liability at times but Rafa's just given him a new deal.

As for Warnock, I think he's got the potential to be a superb left back, I really do.  I hope he gets a run in the team at some point this year, he's got all you need in a good left back - pace, good tackler, decent positioning, good touch, aggressive and good going forward.  However I don't think he's the best left back at the club YET.  As highlighted even in the game v olympiacos, he's prone to the odd blunder - he totally misjudged the bounce of the ball that let Djordevic in for his 2nd goal.  But he's only young and has to learn from these lapses in concentration.

If he does get a decent run in the side this season and does well, it will be interesting to see if Sven takes notice with the world cup looming, especially if Bridge isn't getting a game at Chelsea.  I think possibly next summer is a bit soon for Warnock but I'm convinced he'll be an international player some day.

I think that is what Rafa will probably do, play Riise and Zenden together to start with. It could work if Zenden covers when needed and he is capable of this as you say.

Riise may have to be a little more restrained until they 'gel' on that left side as last night showed we can be vulnerable when he goes forward. Ok so we had Garcia on the left and a make-shift back-four and it was pre-season but still a bit of a worry.

Not too agree with you....

But anyway warnock played well yesterday and if he carry on this way,he will be granted the promise for left back position.

Suddenly i see the future of liverpool with lots of hot prospect. Carson,Gonzales,Baraggan,Welsh,Whitbread,Potter,Medjani,Sissoko and etc. Even though Chris Kirkland going to West brom but i am sure he will be with us.

P/S : Potter did far better than warnock.
Reds is the sacred colour before this world was born.

Think you must have been watching a different game mate.

Potter has started every pre-season game and to be honest he hasn't really taken his chance.  For a right winger his delivery into the box has either been poor or non-existent.  Last night was no different.

From what I understand, he plays more centrally in the reserves, so I'm not going to be too harsh on him if he's being played out of position, and I'm not going to write him off after just a few games, but he hasn't really impressed me.

His passing's been ok and he has a decent touch, but doesn't have great pace or good crossing ability from what I've seen.

Whitbread is the young player that has stood out most for me pre-season.  Very accomplished against Leverkusen, and again against Olympiacos (he was unlucky with that penalty decision - the lad went down very easily).  His positioning, tackling and distribution have been impressive, possibly slightly weak in the air for a centre half though.  Definitely a good prospect I think

id choose warnock over traore becuase he is a better all round left back, and with traore theres always a feeling he might make a mistake or something, but you have to give djimi credit he was nearly leaving us last summer then rafa had a word and he improved ALOT. his tackling is impressive and he has abit of pace aswel.

risse i think should be played left mid although wasnt he brought in as a left back? but i do think risse/zenden combo could work very very well.
