if Keegan would be prepared to be assistant manager like Thompson i can imagine he would be a great success because he's clearly a great man motivator and popular with his players, but he seems to buckle under the media expectation and tactically he's not got it. But along-side someone a bit more astute ie Wenger or Erickson i think he could be a real asset to any team

Martin O'Neill would be my first choice for the manager.

Other possiblities:

1) Sam Allardyce.
2) Alan Curbishley.
3) Neil Warnock.

Neil Warnock from all reports is too much of a nutter and comes out with some pretty daft statements.

Hector Cuper for me is the man. He has everything to prove in the fact that he's a bridesmaid yet this is not a true reflection of his character because:

a) Against Real Madrid he came up against a super side led by Stevie Mac playin a blinder
b) The following year he loses on penalties against Bayern who possessed the best keeper in the world at the time in Oli Kahn
c) With Inter he inherited a team similar to Liverpool now in that they weren't fulfilling their potential and was a victim of a team meltdown which seems characterisitc of all Inter teams
d) The players at Valenica Cuper has produced and spotted (eg Baraja, Mendieta, the 37 ry old at the back playin outta his skin <Carbonari I think>, Carew, Aimar, Kily Gonzalez etc) have all been superb signings/nurturings
e) He led Valenica to runners-up and the following year due to his foundational work they won the Primera Liga over the Galacticos

Cuper's record speaks for itself and is far superior to the other names being mentioned currently. He seems to have a knack for building platforms which ex-giants can re-establish themselves upon plus the fact his technical experience from his time in Spain mixed with the physicalness and quick counter-attacking-take-every-chance-you-get style of Italy would hold him in good stead for the English game.

Hey, Gerrard Houllier's come up with some dumb statements too. I especially love those old chestnuts:

"I think we have turned a corner"

or

"This could be a blessing in disguise"

or

"Emile Heskey just missed that chance at a goal, but at least he's getting in the positions to miss"

....wait, that's not funny

What everybody I feel needs to ask themselves as regards Steve McClaren, Gordon Strachan or any other manager out there who as links to Man United is if they were to make us into  credible Championship challenging/winning club then does it really matter about their history. Would you not be prepared to swallow your pride to see Liverpool back where they belong. I'd get over it. While I don't personally think that McClaren is the man and seeing as Strachan is taking a sabatical there are only really two managers who stand out for me. MON and Hector Cuper. MON will do the job if he comes of that I ahve no doubt and everybod bleats on about the fact he hasn't won anything but remember, he brought a group of journey-men to the UEFA Cup final and only lost because of some woeful refereeing decisions (giving Porto free kicks for balntant dives etc), this is something GH could never achieve in a million years. Besides, what had Shanks, Paisley etc. ever won before they took charge. Cuper won the league with Valencia without spending huge amounts of money. OK the sh*t kinda hit the fan at Inter but hey, whats new there. If a team can't win the league with Ronaldo ancd Christian Vieri up front something is amiss there, and if memory serves me right, did he not bring Inter to the semis of the CL only to lose by a single goalo the eventual winners..... over two legs. Good choice methinks, but hey thats only my opinion.
