The problems lie far deeper than poor tactics or player motivation. The club set up has for some time been splintered into self seeking fractions , all looking after their own interests and all thinking they are untouchable. The most highly qualified coach on the staff , Sammy Lee, would no doubt love to have his say to the "management" but he doesn't appear to have the bottle or influence. The days when we had one boss over all have long gone and the clear out that GH had at first was just a false dawn and the sickness still lives within the club.
Houllier is still after all a school teacher and as you grow up you find that the teacher who terrified you at 14 is a bit of a joke when you are 24. So it has gone with the club. It is going to take a big man to take charge and turn it around and unite all parts. There is no ex-player I can think of up to the job and the mythical "promotion from within" has only worked once, Shanks to Bob, all the others were poor appointments (we would never have won the double with Kenny as manager not player-manager):

Keegan, NO WAY!!! Curbishley, I don't think so......MON is the only choice......I could see the Ranieri thing happening but, as much I like him on a personal level and I think he deserves to keep his job at Chelshite, I think he'd be too much like GH were he to take over at LFC.

Keegan would be a disaster - He would make in an early impact, motivating the players, lots of attacking football and then we would hit the wall (ala Newcastle, England, Man.City)

I like Curbishley, charlton play football the way it should be played, he talks a lot of sense, has improved several of the players he has worked with (Parker, Eull) + has made some canny buys in the transfer market. He also seems to be a manager who commands the respect of his players. I would  be happy enough if we signed him - he has just signed a new contract with Charlton though.

McClaren - I can't quite see that one. He has had plenty of money to spend at Middlesborough without really delivering as yet. He still has more to prove before he can be considered for one of the big club jobs.

Ranieri - I like the guy, he has done a decent job with Chelski over the last 3 years. I also like the fact he has recognised you need quality British players in a team (Lampard, Terry, Bridge, Parker, Cole, Johnson) However i am not sure i would like him in our hot-seat. I feel now is the time to revert to a British manager.

O'neil - I'm not gonna bang on about him coz i have stated how much i want him to be LFC manager on several occasions. I will be GUTTED if we do not give him job.

I am going for o leary to be the next boss!!! good friends with houllier, houllier will move upstairs with o leary taking the reigns!!! He might get us bankrupt but he will probably get us playing with more flair and at least will give youth a chance, a la smith, harte, mcphail, bowyer at leeds not to maention david batty!! (just kidding!)
But we need a manager that is going to utilise some of the gems we have up and coming i.e welsh, otsemebor, partridge, foy, le tallec, pongolle, medjani!

Or why not go for Mark Hughes?

As always, good players do NOT make good managers. There seems to be a problem in understanding why a player cannot do what they could , without thinking. I lost count of the number of times that Dalgliesh was sitting on the bench cringing at balls being passed by lesser mortals.
I think that the strength of the great managers was,and IS, that they were better players in the head than they were in the body. Shanks,Paisley,Ferguson,Revie, Ramsey,even Clough (who was a great promise but never got the chance to prove it,through injury) never shook the world as players but were thinking players who could later talk to a player as a manager and show that they knew the game.
Almost every great player I can think of was instinctive  which is no good when trying to teach lesser men.

I'm assuming he is still available since he was released, but what about Cuper? He done a great job at Valencia, and although he didn't do much at Inter, I feel that job is very much an impossiblilty with the attitude of the president of the club (he's a fri**in nutter!!!). I'd steer well clear of the managers in the British Isles, and that includes MON. I dunno, there something that doesn't quite fit with the idea of MON in charge at LFC.. I reckon it would end up in tears...

I'm not in favour of Keegan becoming new Liverpool boss. We could never be certain that he wouldn't abandon us when things got tough.

As for players becoming managers. Look at Arsene Wenger. He didn't exactly have a stellar career as a player but he is a brilliant manager. Didn't have what it takes to be a world class player, but his tactical and strategic football mind is incredible, plus, unlike Gerrard Houllier, he can buy players who can actually play football. He can buy defenders who can like defend, and strikers who can actually score goals.

I don't think Kenny wants or needs that sort of pressure anymore.He's quite happy to take his seat in the stand and watch,although it probably pains him to see the kind of football thats churned out at Anfield nowadays.

i'll put my vote for mon but i've heard the mclaren romours alot and this may end up as reality--for all you cringing he will be forgiven as soon as he wins-- illustration-- the chris chelios deal- detroit and chicago never dealt for 40 yrs-- we hated cheli(really hated) we get him, we all look at each other for a week had a few molsons and then forgave him for all the evil he did to us-- mclaren would bring a winning attitude (learnt from a master) and attract good players( butt ,savage quickly)-- just watch stevie go with real managerment

Cant take Mclaren far too much baggage! He's Scum and what style of football would he bring? Boro aren't exactly burning down the trees!

I wouldn't lose sleep if Steve McLaren was paraded as our new manager.I certainly feel he would make more of an effort to develop homegrown British talent than raiding the crappy league of France.
