Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

We're gona have to try and win 1 or 2 0 at home and NOT conceed a goal....then go to their place and hold for a draw like we did in the Ueffa cup a couple of years back....we are strong over 2 legs and our team does seem to rise to the challenge of Champions League football  :;):

Starting eleven:

                     Buffon

Zebina        Thuram  Cannavaro        Zambrotta

Camoranesi    Emerson Blasi          Nedved

                 Del Piero
                           Ibrahimovic

Available: Montero (D-C), Pessotto (D,M-L), Chimenti (GK), Birindelli (D-R), Appiah (M-C,R), Bonnefoi (GK), Olivera (M,AM,A-R,C), Zalayeta (M,AM,A-L,C), Trezeguet (A-C)
Unavailable: Ferrara (D-C), Kapo (AM,A-L,C), Tacchinardi (DM-C), Mutu (A-R,C)

We had more time to rest as the Pope has passed.
The team will be in Liverpool early today.
The fans seem calm.

how has smicer been going ? is he better as a starter than sub ?  I think he might be better of starting the game give some strength and then replaced if required...

What about rafs tactics / strategy for this game ?  what has he said and will it be able to handle juve strengths ?

as a tactic id love to see rise and carra swap - they wouldnt be expecting that.

surely the black and white players will be distracted by the popes passing ?

I think the team will be:

Dudek

Finnan    Carragher  Hyypia Warnock

Nunez    Gerrard    Biscan     Riise

            Garcia
                         Baros

**Juventus have failed to win their last five European Cup away meetings against English clubs.

push for 2-0....we can't conceed a goal, in fact 1-0 would be a decent result because we would only need to nik a goal in Italy and then defend like hell!

I just wanted to see what the Juventus team would look like if they had a similar situation to us. (I've ignored Mutu as he has not played a game for Juventus and was never expected to play). I'm not comparing ability just the position they play and importance in the squad:

Morientes - Trezeguet
Cisse - Del Piero
Pongolle - Zalayeta
Mellor - Kapo
Kewell - Nedved
Xabi Alonso - Tacchinardi
Hamann - Blasi
Warnock - Pessotto
Josemi - Birindelli
Pellegrino - Montero
Kirkland - Buffon

                         Chimenti

Zebina        Thuram    Cannavaro   Zambrotta

Camoranesi  Emerson   Appiah        Olivera

                    ?
                          Ibrahimovic

Subs

?
?
?
?
?
Ferrara
Bonnefoi

Not so frightening any more is it?

Feel free to change anything or replace the question marks Juventino.

it'll probably be del piero playing upfront with ibrahimovich as trezeguet is recovering from injury and will probably on the bench. I doubt we can score more than 1 goal against them considering they've conceeded less goals in serie A than AC milan. so 1-0 would be a very good result

In fact, we would have our usual defense line and 7 usual staring players. Olivera shouldn't be underestimated, he's technical and deadly on free kicks (IMHO, our best player for that). Bonnefoi is (was?) the goalkeeper of the U21 french national team.
Appiah is clearly our weakest link in this team, him and Legrottaglie are made to play in 2nd division...
But if we had as much injured as you have, we would have kept Tudor, Iuliano, Scicchitano,Zeytulayev and Legrottaglie instead of spreading them around the world this winter.

                         Bonnefoi

Thuram          Ferrara    Cannavaro     Zebina

Camoranesi  Emerson   Appiah        Zambrotta

                    Olivera
                           Ibrahimovic

Subs

D'Elia
Volpe
Criscito
Arata
Masiello
Volpato
Chimenti

With this squad, we could score two goals max and take none, but we couldn't afford to loose one more player as (except for Volpato and Chimenti) none of them is ready for a game against LFC or any big european team.

Here is the last article of Gazzetta dello Sport, the main daily sport newspaper in Italy.

I translate it, hoping that it will be useful for you guys.

The Bianconeri are in LFC's house. With Nedved upfront, they will play the 1st leg of the CL quarter-finals. Buffon:"Fundmental match"

Liverpool, April 4, 2004 - Juve are in LFC's house. They landed at lunch time at Liverpool Airport, named after John Lennon, and are ready for tomorrow's battle. Fabio Capello is happy (can't translate that cheap italian slang...:D) and will enjoy Pavel Nedved 40 days after he was hit on his head by Raul Bravo at Santiago Bernabeu. Returning to Liverpool brings up bad and sad memories, Heysel night 20 years ago.
"We mus learn from what happened that night 20 years ago" -- Luciano Moggi (Juve general director) says -- " Let's remember that tragedy in order to avoid other ones and the fans' answer will be great. Anfield's score? Call me tomorrow and I will tell you if I dreamed it right".
Also goalie Gianluigi Buffon is extremely focused: "We play against the Reds an extremely important match, but we are used to this kind of prestigious matches. The Brits seem to be in trouble because of the many absences; we will have to try to take advantage of that and get a good score in order to not have to come back at Delle Alpi". Juve's goalkeeper then remembers Pope John Paul II and his recent death: "I knew he used to play as goalkeeper like me, and he was a great sports fan".
Besides tragedy, LFC brings up bad memories to Emerson and Zebina as well, with AS Roma kicked out of the CL 3 years ago by LFC. "That was a different LFC and we were playing with AS Roma. We are confident and highly motivated." Said Emerson clearing any doubt. Zebina agrees:" It's part of the past, but it'll actually be useful to give us further motivations. LFC is a dangerous team and there will be no chance that we will underestimate them".

Hope this helps.
