Rafa in the bar

:D What a man, we love you Rafa

EXCLUSIVE: RAFA ON THE NIGHT HE WENT THE PUB
Mark Platt 11 March 2005
Rafael Benitez has spoken for the first time about the now legendary night he spent in a German bar with 200 or so Liverpudlians and described it as a 'fantastic experience'.
The Liverpool boss stunned a pub load of travelling Reds when he popped into Jameson's Irish bar in Cologne city centre the night before the Champions tie against Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday.

Together with Pako Ayesteran and Alex Miller he left the team hotel with the intention of finding somewhere quiet to watch the second half of the Chelsea v Barcelona game.

But for once he misjudged the situation.

What followed has already passed into folklore, with every Liverpool fan under the sun now claiming to have been there when 'Rafa went the pub to see the lads'.

"It was fantastic. We went out to see the second part of the Chelsea game but we only ended up seeing our supporters," Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv in an exclusive interview at Melwood today.

"The atmosphere was amazing and we could really feel it. Normally we only see or hear them in the stands so it was fantastic to meet them close up.

"I was not expecting there to be so many Liverpool fans in Germany. Just before going into the Irish bar we thought there might be some fans in there but not that many!

"We tried to sneak in without anyone noticing and I said to the first fan 'ssshhhhh be quiet', but next thing the whole place erupted and everyone was singing 'Rafa-Rafa-Benitez'.

"I stayed for about 50 minutes but it was impossible to watch the game after that. All the fans gathered around me, singing, shaking my hand and taking photographs with their mobile telephones. I told them to forget about me and watch the game but it was impossible.

"The singing continued all the time I was there. It was great. The fans of this club are totally different to those in Spain. In my third year at Valencia the fans began to sing but here they have been singing since I arrived. They are always singing. And to experience it at close hand in the pub was just fantastic."

So will a tripto the pub now be part of Rafa's regular pre-match routine, especially as it was followed by a memorable win on the pitch?

"Oh no," he laughs. "Normally we will be in the hotel concentrating. It was only because there were important games on the TV and we couldn't watch them in the hotel."

The high esteem in which Benitez is held by the Liverpool fans has certainly reached new heights following the midweek trip to Cologne.

But his soaring popularity was best illustrated prior to the Carling Cup Final in Cardiff when a group of supporters paraded through the streets holding a giant framed picture of the 'Rafa-tollah'.

"Yes, I have seen the pictures," he says with a beaming smile across his face. "I must say I was both surprised and impressed.

"It is not normal in Spain, maybe Iran but not Spain! It's a kudos thing and for me as a manager it was fantastic to see the fans showing their support for me in such a way.

"It was just a pity we couldn't have won the final for these supporters and all of our other supporters but I can assure them that we are doing all we can to give them some trophies to celebrate in the future."

He is a legend now for this, no other manager at any club will ever get this status, bit like Shankly when he stood on the kop and the kop sang Shankly give us a song :D

I promise that the reason behind Rafa finding the bar was due to myself & 4 other lads being the ones who were in the hotel.

We had been into Cologne for a few early Tuesday afternoon, The Hyatt was on our way back to our own hotel & so we though we would go in & see what was happening. We sheepishly walked past the prying eyes in the hotel & went upstairs to where we thought the bar would be. I was then approached by a German who spoke to me & said " he was from the hotel & could he help ". I ordered 5 beers & he kindly arranged for them to be brought over to our table. A few yards away we noticed David Moores with a group of people & shortly after, he came over to us, we were intending to go over & shake his hand, but the chairman of our club came over to shake our hands & chat to us, what a guy.

After he left us, one of the lads with me on coming back from a ****** bumped into Carra & he asked if he would come over for a photo, he was shortly followed by Darren Potter who knew one of the lads in our party. They were happy to chat with us & get some photos but they had to go as they had a meeting.

A short while after this, David Moores came back over to us & asked were the game was being shown that night as there hotel did not have it on. We told him we had  earlier been in The Corkonian & they were closing due to trouble there last time but that we had been told that it was on at The Jameson. Little did we think at the time that our chat with Moores would lead to Rafa coming to the bar, what a great end to a perfect night with the Mancs getting beat.

Myself & those with me our convinced that he came not to see the match as I am sure he would know that he would get mobbed, we are certain he came the pub to see the lads. Well done to the person who came up with the new Rafa song.

So that's how it happened, straight from the horses mouth, bring on the draw, we will take on anyone & give them a good game if we play some of the football we did on Wednesday.

I'm not into older OR younger men but I'd marry him too  :D

The enigma and almost religous mania that surrounded Rafa Benitez even before Tuesday night when he mingled with Liverpool fans in an Irish bar in Cologne is only set to escaalte as the manager takes on even more status. To say his appearance was "Shanklyesque" is not overdoing it.

"Rafa came down to earth and dwelt amoungst us"   :D

It's like the Pope coming and mingling with Catholics in a church, it really is. No-one expected Benitez to do that sot of thing, but he did.

To me it proves hom much this club and the fans mean to him, and to those who said he would go to Madrid if the chance came up, I seriously doubt it.

Facts are regarding the Real Madrid managers job it comes up three times a season so if he has aspirations then why hasn't he already gone there !

The fact is that despite the ups and downs of this innaugral first season it's quite obvious that there is a mutual love between Benitez and Liverpool fans and not one that we should underestimate.

On the Benitez phenomenon don't forget that players like Alonso, Garcia etc ..... came to Liverpool largely because Benitez is the boss here and whose to say other players won't want to come to LFC for the same reason irrespective of where we finish THIS season .... :)
