Benitez looking forward to Chelsea challenge
Story by Adam Bryant 28 December 2004
Rafael Benitez was delighted with today's result, is happy with Steven Gerrard's performance and is looking forward to the New Year's Day clash with Chelsea.
"We started well and controlled the game in the first half but it's difficult sometimes when you score one goal and don't score a second one - you are a little afraid,2 he admitted. "But in the end it was important to win.
"We had some chances at the end of the game but the goalkeeper saved well, but perhaps we need more confidence to go on and score a second goal.
"Gerrard is playing well. He has the right mentality we need for winning games and it's important because he is the captain.
"We need to find the players we need in January. We are looking for different possibilities but we need to find players we need - not just strikers, defenders or wingers.
"If we play well at the start of January we may need less players, I don't know.
"We are playing well in some games. It was difficult today, but if you win you can play better next time.
"Chelsea is a difficult game. They are a good team with confidence but if we play at home we can always win against anyone."
Key context: If we play well at the start of January we may need less players, I don't know
