Throw ins

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I have posted this before, years ago but cant find it. I know people are going to say we have more to worry about than throw ins, but has anybody realised how toe-curlingly bad we are at taking them? Almost 99% of the time we lose possession from them, and more times then not put ourselves under needless pressure.
Is there a point to them?

I must admit one thing that annoys me is when one of our players has the ball in his hands and a quick throw is on but for some reason he decides to wait for the designated throw in taker to come over and by that time our players are all marked.

Not only that, when it is taken, we give it away!

Unfortunately this comes from the lack of quick thinking players and training.

Throw-ins should always (or at least 90% of the time) be thrown forwards.
Throw ins should rarely go back to the keeper unless there is no immediate danger of losing possession.
Throw ins should be a tactical strength not a weakness. Was taught this basic point at school
We now have a big target man to pull defenders out of position on throw ins, leaving space in channels and wings for the like of PC to exploit.
If coaches saw throw-ins the way basket ball coaches saw them, more creativity and goal potential would come.
STOKE had one of the most ruthless and dangerous throw ins once upon a time. Statistically, the number of points Stoke gained from ican'trememberhisname-buthadoneheckofathrowin should have prompted other teams to seek and adopt such a goal threat source.
Having a throw in expert is a speciality position like the Goal-keeper position.

Your talking about Rory Delap, his throw ins were the equivalent of a free kick for Stoke ! sadly we don't have anyone who can throw the ball that far, not even Mignolet !!!   (  :D  )

Yes Woof thank you.
It just surprises me that with all the money and development that has gone into football and the consistent stats from RORY DELAP  :) that this kind of specialist position has not been developed in leagues around the world?

John Arne Riise had a hell of a throw on him and used to use it in a similar way to Delap

Im not talking about long throw ins. Im talking about using them to our advantage by throwing to our players and keeping possession, using throw ins to start an attack or as part of our ongoing tactics?
I think my point has been proven by thinking that if you dont have a Rory Delap, or Riise, then throw ins are useless. If thats so, then why claim them and get angry if you dont get given them? Better just letting the opposition have them and take the ball off them when they have taken the throw?
Thats what happens to us?
