Liverpool have been heavily linked with a move to snap up Wilfried Bony from Swansea as a replacement, but with his value set at £19m, Remy is seen as a good option.
The French striker starred for Newcastle on loan from QPR last season, and has been heavily linked with Arsenal in recent months.
But the Gunners are thought to be dragging their heels with a potential move, and may well pull out altogether after beating Liverpool to Alexis Sanchez.
Rodgers is eager to beat the Londoners to Remy, whose release clause stands at just £9m.
The 27-year-old is also wanted on a permanent basis by Newcastle, but the Merseysiders can offer him a more lucrative contract and Champions League football.
Liverpool may still pursue Bony as well, and are closing in on deals for Lazar Markovic, Dejan Lovren and Divock Origi.

Remy would be much the better option IMO, he'd cost half the price of Bony and he's more mobile too which would suit our style more.
Bony is a dog average striker. If I was going to take one from Swans it would be Michu over him. Remy is by far the better option, although not the answer. AGAIN we're linked with second rate players.
Unless we sign a stellar name though mate (which we won't) anyone that we bring in is more than likely going to end up as a back up to Sturridge.
Some people think Bony is as good as Sturridge, well Danny has been here nearly two years now and he's out scored every striker in our history up to this point, if people honestly think Bony is going to come here and score goals at a faster rate than the likes of Hunt, Rush, Aldridge, Fowler, Dalglish, Keegan, Owen, Torres and Suarez like Danny has done over the past 2 years then they obviously see something in Bony that I don't. As I say we are not talking 3 months here Danny has done it for 2 years and what's more he's just entering his mid 20's prime so he's going to get even better.
No way a lumbering plodder like Bony takes Danny's place in a dynamic pace based attack like ours. If he comes he'll be the same as Aspas, he'll feature for the first couple of months and then end up on the bench.
Remy would cost half as much as Bony and he'd suit our system more because he can actually run. I'd much rather see £9m sitting on the bench than £20m
