JOE ALLEN- Official thread

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Very good performance from him today. Hopefully he continues to get a run in the team and isn't the player that makes way for Gerrard when the captain returns. He brings a new dimension to our midfield as he's involved in both attacking and defending, something that Lucas is incapable of doing. Is very calm under pressure as well.

You forgot to mention Coutinho and Suarez aswell.

I'd be shocked if anyone covered more ground than Luis in that game.

Luis proves that great players can also work hard.

This just reminded me of a poster who said that strikers don't track back or something or those lines. I think he used RVP as an example too

Didn't travel to Bournemouth because of an injury.

If he isn't fit for the derby we're *****. We'll have to play with 16 year olds in midfield.

Maybe he didn't travel because he is being kept backfor the derby. But if he isn't fit we will have to play Alberto. The lad who cost about 9 million.

If Joe isn't fit for the derby we are in trouble, gerrard had a decent game today but he was basically playing as an auxiliary defender, we practically vacated the midfield and as a result our two biggest weapons (Sturridge and Suarez) spent half the game as water carriers doing donkey work.
Having the likes of Suarez track runners back to the edge of our own area is not only a waste of his talent but a tactical disaster too because deep in our half is exactly where the opposition want to see Luis.
We have got to play 4-3-3, even if it means one of our front players has to drop into the midfield, the extra man in there is better than nothing.
If Allen isn't fit I'd like to see this team for the derby -

                                                      Mingolet

                Toure.                Skrtel.                  Sakho.              Flanagan

                                         Gerrard.              Henderson

                                                      Coutinho

                            Sterling.             Sturridge.          Suarez.

The team did look a bit more balanced with Coutinho as a third midfielder instead of a winger didn't it? But then again we were only playing a Championship side. I really hope that Allen isn't injured, otherwise I fear we might be overrun by Everton's midfield.

Anyway Yakka, I thought that you were against this pivot Gerrard thing as well? If we're so persistent on playing Gerrard as a DM then he must be partnered by at least one more player, preferably Allen, with Henderson in front of them.

If Allen is fit I'd play him and hendo ahead of gerrard and tell them to press high up the pitch, then have the likes of sterling and Suarez press aggressively too.
It's pointless playing another holding midfielder next to gerrard because we will just end up too deep and only invite pressure on ourselves.
It's not an ideal situation but while gerrard is there you just have to accept that your midfield is going to be unbalanced and the pressing game isn't going to be great but I'd still rather have a go than just set up camp at the edge of our own area.
It's a pity Lucas wasn't fit so we could shove gerrard out to right back where I think he'd do well.

I believe Joe Allen has picked up a knock, and, potentially could be out for some time.

Absolutely vital to how we play.
No surprise his last game was against Spurs and he allowed us to press high on a day were we looked fantastic.

Our pressing game is practically none existent these days, on the rare occassions that we do press it's in one's and two's, we no longer hunt in packs.

With Sturridge and Allen back though, we can still do it.  The Spurs win shows that we are still capable of playing good football.
if we play like below we could easily get our pressing game going.

                              Gerrard
               Hendo                   Allen
                              Sterling
                 Balotelli             Sturridge

I don't think Gerrard belongs in any line up that plans to press high up the pitch, I'd much rather try and fit Lallana in there

Sorry,  but have to ask what does this guy exactly do? Just seems bit of a nothing player who makes up the numbers. Water carrier, jack of all trades, master of none kind of player (Hendo falls in this category as well for me ). Would be quite happy to move him on and bring someone else in
