Liverpool have held constructive talks with Luis Suarez's agent as speculation over the striker's future rumbles on.

Pere Guardiola flew to Merseyside to meet Reds managing director Ian Ayre at the club's city centre offices yesterday before heading for Melwood to see manager Brendan Rodgers.

The ECHO understands that the dialogue was both “positive” and “amicable”.

Anfield officials have always enjoyed a good working relationship with the agent, who is the brother of new Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola, and that remains the case.

There was no backtracking from the agent following Suarez's public declarations in South America that he would jump at the opportunity to quit English football this summer and sign for Real Madrid.

However, no transfer request was submitted by Guardiola – a sign that his Uruguayan client, who is on holiday following the Confederations Cup, is not currently prepared to try to force through a move.

During the discussions both Ayre and Rodgers reiterated the club's position that they want Suarez to stay at Anfield and aren't interested in selling the 26-year-old, who is under contract for a further three years.

Guardiola's trip to Merseyside came just hours after it emerged that Liverpool had rejected a £30million offer for Suarez from Arsenal.

However, the ECHO understands the timing was simply a coincidence with yesterday's talks having already been scheduled before the Gunners made their approach.

Guardiola gave no indication to Liverpool that a move to the Emirates would interest Suarez, who has always insisted that his treatment at the hands of the UK press was his pressing reason for wanting to part company with the Reds.

Sources in London suggest Arsenal are highly unlikely to increase their offer.

Having became frustrated in their attempts to wrap up a £23million deal with Real Madrid for Gonzalo Higuain, Arsene Wenger has been looking at alternative striking options with the Gunners having also contacted Manchester United recently over Wayne Rooney.

However, Arsenal's bid for Suarez was instantly dismissed and they have been left in no doubt that Liverpool aren't interested in selling their prized asset, especially to one of their domestic rivals.

The Reds, who value Suarez at around £45million to £50million, are keen to ensure that the speculation doesn't drag on until the end of the transfer window.

But with Real Madrid yet to firm up their interest and with no guarantees they would prepared to stump up that kind of fee, a resolution to the summer-long saga appears to be some way off.

Suarez is due back from his holidays on July 22 and is expected to be involved in the Melbourne and Bangkok legs of the club's pre-season tour.

The importance of retaining Suarez's services has increased after Liverpool missed out on Henrikh Mkhitaryan, their top summer transfer target.

The attacking midfielder has agreed a four-year deal with Borussia Dortmund who will pay Shakhtar Donetsk around £21million.

Meanwhile, Reds midfielder Jay Spearing is considering interest from Blackburn Rovers.

The Championship outfit have agreed in principle a £1.75million deal for the 24-year-old but they have to sell a player – most likely full-back Martin Olsson – in order to finance the transfer.

As Blackburn look to free up sufficient cash, Spearing is waiting to discover if there are any other offers on the table as he would ideally want to stay in the Premier League.

The headline says "positive" talks - but for who ? us or the player - especially when it also says the agent hasnt backtracked on the desire to leave

I expect the club have told the agent where they stand - dont want to sell but if he wants to go a club must bid the required amount whilst the agent told the club of the players wish to leave but wants it done right without the need for a transfer request - ball been placed in the court of Suarez now

The ban is for competitive domestic games not friendlies.

Luis Suarez still wants to leave Liverpool, says his agent

Luis Suarez's agent has reiterated the Uruguayan's desire to play for a Champions League club during talks with Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers and managing director Ian Ayre.

Pere Guardiola travelled to Merseyside and held separate meetings with Rodgers and Ayre, which were planned and understood to be amicable.

Suarez in numbers
Luis Suarez
•30 goals in 44 appearances for Liverpool last season
•Since joining from Ajax in January 2011 for £22.7m, has scored 51 in 96 appearances
•49 goals in 48 games for Ajax the season before joining Liverpool
•31 goals in 62 appearances for Uruguay

Liverpool have insisted their position has not changed and they want to keep the 26-year-old striker, while Guardiola has not submitted an official transfer request on behalf of Suarez.

Suarez is currently on an extended break after playing for Uruguay in the Confederations Cup in Brazil.

The player, however, has given a series of interviews this summer in which he has expressed his desire for Champions League football and it is believed Guardiola relayed that message again to Liverpool's hierarchy in Monday's discussions.

Liverpool have already rejected a £30m offer from Arsenal for Suarez, who has spoken publicly this summer about his disenchantment with life in England and what he regards as unfair treatment from the media.

Suarez, who is currently serving a 10-match suspension for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic at Anfield last season, has been consistently linked with a move to Real Madrid.

It would take an offer close to the £50m Liverpool received from Chelsea for Fernando Torres in January 2011 to make them even consider selling the forward.

The Merseyside club, however, have established a close working relationship with the highly respected Guardiola, brother of Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola, during Suarez's troubled time at Anfield and have not given up hope that he will resume his career in the Premier League once he has served his ban.

Suarez has scored 51 goals in 96 appearances for the Reds since joining them in January 2011 for £22.7m.

As yet, there has been no firm expression of interest in him from Real Madrid, with Arsenal having made the only firm move, although Chelsea have also been touted as considering a bid for Suarez.

And, given his repeated complaints about his life in England, it would be a surprise if he even considered staying in the Premier League - and if Liverpool would consider selling Suarez to another English club

when it comes to transfers madrid and barcelona use the same brinkmanship tactics all the time, they act like they arent interested in a player then sign him at the last minute. real`s president once famously said to the press `read my lips, we are not signing david beckham` then 24 hours later there he was in a press conference standing next to beckham, watching him being handed his madrid shirt by alfredo di stefano.
the alonso and mascherano transfers dragged on until the very last minute as well, i actually thought both were staying as it was too late to do a deal (especially mascherano) but the 2 spanish giants have done it so often they get their timing just right.
as far as i`m concerned i expect luis to leave and that wont change until the window shuts and he`s still here.

You just know Real will **** about the entire window, letting Marca write **** all to unsettle Suarez even more and then making a 35-40 million offer at the last second.

That must mean the club was in the wrong, so don't judge too harshly.  You can't have a contract with a club who is fulfilling their part of the agreement, and have a court help force through a transfer unless the club is doing something wrong.  I don't think anybody has actually looked up the facts of that whole incident, we're just acting as bad as the English press and saying he's forced his way out because he's a horrible person.

The court ruled against him - but Ajax upped their offer ( doubled it ) and the transfer went through

So sod all to do with the legal action then!!

Then Ayre and FSG need to grow a pair and tell Real Madrid to f off, they have no obligation to sell Suarez, why would they be forced into selling him for less than they want? A contract is a contract and Suarez is aLFc layer for the next 3 years UNLESS the club decide to sell him, if he does a sulk then great no wages to pay him plus you can fine him so the club makes money back, again no risk to the club. I'm starting to think that he may stay.

I've got a sneaky feeling he will stay but if not I'm not overly worried if he does move on because Liverpool FC hold the cards. Of course the only concern is Madrid's tactic of last minute bids to consider but I'll be fecked if I'm going to worry my summer off over that - we'll have to deal with it when and if, the time arises.

whats the bets that with two days left in the window Real Madrid come in with a 40mil bid...we will fight it and with an hour to go in the window we take 45mil for him and get left without a top striker.
