Five January loan options for Liverpool's Jordan Henderson
Could Aston Villa, Fulham, Southampton, Wigan or even a return to Sunderland be on the cards for the unwanted Liverpool midfielder?
Jordan Henderson is yet to start a Premier League game for Liverpool this season. Just think about that for a moment, yes the player who cost £18 million a year ago, and this is with Lucas out injured.
In fact he has made just four substitute appearances, and found himself part of the second string, as evidenced last night as he featured against Anzhi with Joe Cole and a number of youth team players.
Just this week Henderson confirmed he was ushered towards the exit door on deadline day, as Liverpool desperately attempted to sign Clint Dempsey, only for him to refuse the loan move to Fulham.
"I worked really hard to come to a club like Liverpool and I didn't want to leave in a hurry. I want to stay at Liverpool for as long as I can. I want to keep fighting for my place and I told the manager that. I said I wanted to stay and keep fighting because I believe I can get into the team."
It's not happening for him so far, and he failed to impress last night, as this snapshot of supporter views displays via twitter:
@kraftykuts: Jordan Henderson should never wear a Liverpool shirt again #rubbish
@declanbickers: Jordan Henderson = liverpools worst signing
@oohmyliver: Jordan Henderson says he has no regrets about signing for lfc, unfortunately we fans have plenty of regrets.
@daviddownie17: Astounds me how people still rate Jordan Henderson. How many poor games does the lad need to have to convince he isn't good enough? #LFC
We could go on and on...
But Henderson has to consider the possibility of going out on loan in January to gain first team playing time. If he wants to make it at Liverpool and win over the fans, fair enough, time is on his side - he is only 22-years-old.
The most logical solution however is to go on loan and get back to playing regularly, and a little bit out of the spotlight. A change of scenery may well do him good for a short period and let him rebuild.
He has played just 78 minutes in total in the Premier League this season, and that is not good for his development, or his confidence.
So here are five potential loan options for him in January...
Aston Villa
Paul Lambert has struggled to revitalise Aston Villa since taking over, and central midfield is one area where they are lacking, with promising young talent Gary Gardner out injured for the season. Henderson could be a useful stop-gap, and playing for another British manager, in front of a big crowd, alongside a number of young English players can only be good for him.
Fulham
Fulham were of course the team Henderson could have gone to on loan in August, and he will have had plenty of time to ponder the switch. Central midfield is an area Fulham are short in after losing Moussa Dembele late in the summer, so much so they were forced to take a punt on ageing free agent Karagounis. Henderson on loan would help tide them over until the summer transfer window.
Southampton
Southampton are really in a relegation scrap, and while its fair to suggest if this would be the right thing for Henderson's confidence if they go down, giving him something to play for and aim for could spur him on, rather than signing for a mid-table side who will trail off as the season winds down. It allows him to become a hero, and the Saints attacking approach is not far removed from Brendan Rodgers' footballing philosophy.
Wigan
So Henderson could be managed by Roberto Martinez this season after all. Wigan have become a side keen to take advantage of the loan system in recent years, bringing in Cleverley from United a couple of seasons back, and Ryo Miyaichi from Arsenal this year. Martinez will have the respect of Liverpool's owners after keeping quiet on their interview, even if the same cannot be said of the conduct of chairman Dave Whelan.
Sunderland
Sunderland stand out as a strong choice for Henderson, because they are his former side where he made his name. He knows the club, the fans, and the surroundings, and could settle quickly and start enjoying his football again. It would be under Martin O'Neill rather than Steve Bruce, but many would say this would be a good thing for his football development, working with one of the most respected coaches in the game.
Which of the above would be the best fit for Henderson, and do you think he has a future at Liverpool long-term?
