skilled in terms of what ??

By Skills i mean ball control ,dribble and passing ability. His speed is a great plus for us as well. Other then Suarez which has almost absolute ball control (Where Messi tops the table),their isn't anyone else on the team that matches him.

It's a close call.... but yeah, I'd take Downing over Young too. But the difference is not that much..... The thing is, Young is a potential game breaker in every game.... but he goes missing often and is a purely confidence type player... if things don't go well then he disappears.

Stewart is not as flashy but IMO, he's a more reliable player and will do the hard graft for the team as and when required. Combine that with his last ball delivery and ability to beat the full back, he'll be more than a useful addition to the squad methinks.

Now if we were comparing him to Gareth Bale..... that's a different kettle of fish altogether.

I'm happy we have him in the team. We've been crying out for years for this kind of player.

just found this data on the BBC website - makes interesting reading - don't think anyone would have put Downing so high up the list - guess misses off some real gems (Messi, Sanchez, our own Luis S etc etc) b/c its a five year compilation and guess they are too young but will surely be on the list by this year or next, but still Downing aint looking so bad if he can continue like this

EUROPE'S TOP FIVE* LEAGUES - CHANCES CREATED 2006-11Continue reading the main story
1 Fabregas - 466

2 Xavi - 455

3 Lampard - 452

4 Pizarro - 427

5 Diego - 423

6 Gerard - 396

7 Totti - 378

8 Giggs - 365

9 Nene - 361

10 Downing - 355

Not many natural wingers these days with Stewart Downing's crossing ability and wide play, well the only other one I can think of is Gareth Bale.

Riera was great going on the by line, but his delivery was sometimes lacking

20M and that's just to get him to switch back to the left flank.

Downing has shown he is a reliable winger who does what is says on the label.

BUT please stop playing him in the centre or right wing from the 60 th minute onwards!
It's doing my head in :(

When we were looking at buying him so many people on here said he was too slow and wasn't a natural winger and could only cross and wouldn't fit in and all this garage...

He's fast as hell.  He knows how to move the ball really well.  He's really good at taking on fullbacks.  He's great at crossing.  He works hard tracking back.  He's fit right in and been one of our best players in the first 2 games.

He's a natural winger....

Glad to see so many people were wrong about him. :)

Hey you cant say that, dont you know how many experts are on here. Just have a look at all the clueless posts in the Charlie Adam thread!
Our job is simple, to support the club, not just parts of the club that are easy to support, but every one who plays a part, that includes ALL players.  We are stronger when we are all walking in the same direction. Walk On
