Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Ola Mr Benitez » Wed Sep 07, 2011 10:50 am

I thought Downing looked excellent last night, really good!!! great work on both the left and right.

Great news for Liverpool, but I would love us to spend a fortune on Bale in Jan/July and have both of them switching all game.  That would be amazing!!!!!  40 or 50 Mill should do it!!! lol :p
Our job is simple, to support the club, not just parts of the club that are easy to support, but every one who plays a part, that includes ALL players.  We are stronger when we are all walking in the same direction. Walk On

On the subject of Downing ,how bias was Tyldesley when describing his assist ? Especially when compared to eulogising over Youngs 'rapier like finish '. Its a small miracle the United players can run anywhere with Tyldesley hanging from their rip.

I don't know why people get wound up by 'apparent' bias. Water off a ducks for me, it's best rubbed in when we turn such eulogized w*nk*rs over.

Downing gets my vote as MOTM. He initiated many of our attacks. He looks just as good on the left and right flank but I'd prefer him to be in the right with Enrique. Our right flank is a weakness, Hendo is not a natural right winger.

You cant be too critical of Downing given how some of our other summer buys have performed, but I think hes another one who needs to step up their game considerably. One of the main reasons hes struggling to make an impact in terms of goals and assists for me is our lack of right wingers. He seems to want to cover the width of the pitch and that for me doesn't bring out the best in him. So far, hes been exactly what many expected he would be when we signed him: Good but nothing special. He offers something different which is being an outlet from wider positions, but the players around him do him no favors in terms of off the ball movement and overall creativity.

Hes still got work to do to justify his price tag, but more importantly I hope that Kenny will soon decide on playing him as a natural left winger to try and get him doing what he does best which is creating chances from wide areas.

I had to look carefully to make sure he was still on the pitch for most of the game.
He needs to raise his game at least 50% and start making things happen

I agree with this. He's spent more time over on the right or drifting centrally in a free role rather than staying out on the left which is undoubtedly his best position. His linking with Enrique down that side should be as good if not better than anything in this league.

Is anyone else as concerned as me that Downing is turning into the invisible man?
We see other players being discussed and concerns of fans being aired but Downing never seems to attract criticism. I had to look for his thread and found it on the second page.
The last post about him on this thread (above) on September the 19th.
Are people really happy with his contribution and has nobody got a problem with him going missing in matches?

???

It's starting to be a concern.  He started brightly for us but seems to have plateaued a bit of late.  Maybe Bellamy's performances as a sub will provide some genuine competition.  He needs to get more involved and get back to linking intelligently with the CMs and Enrique.

Noted (that he has been quiet) but not concerned by it. We haven't been playing very well over the past few weeks so players like Downing don't really stand out.

Im not talking about standing out
Im talking about being awol
He is supposed to be one of our main striking threats yet Enrique seems to be doing his own and Downings jobs?

Something definitely isn't right with him at the minute. It doesn't help when there's only 1 player to aim for in the box, but he just doesn't even seem to be taking players on anymore. I wonder if he's carrying a knock or perhaps distracted by some off-the-field events because he's just not been with it over the last few matches. He looked the pick of our signings in preseason but the rate he's going he will get dropped from the team.

That said, too many cooks spoil the broth and at the minute we're trying to play too many drifting players. Henderson, Suarez, Downing and to a certain degree Lucas. Once Stevie is back in, that'll be another one, hopefully replacing Henderson (who has been sh*te).

But I have to say Maxi is the forgotten man. He was about as effective in a creative sense as Stuart but at least he scores goals! I'd consider chucking him back in the side.
