Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I'm not a fan of Lucas. I thought he was our worse starting player last season. But I must admit he has improved alot this season and has become an acceptable holding midfielder. Those who are saying he is an attacking midfielder is nuts. He maybe when he was 18... but he can never be an attacking midfielder at this level. His distribution has improved... he is starting to pass forward rather than sideways and to the back. I think he should model is play towards Dunga and try to become like him. Next thing he should improve on is giving away silly fouls at dangerous areas and holding the ball better.
I think all in all he will be a useful player for us in the future and his attitude so far is spot on.

In the years to come when we`re back on top, 2 players (apart from Gerrard, Reina and Carra), Levia and Kuyt will stand out as those who helped get us there.

I agree.  People don't realize how important working that hard on the pitch really is.

This is good news. The lad deserves it; Commolli's comment speaks volumes:

"...it's always team first when you speak to Lucas - that's why we wanted him to stay."

happy that he got a new contract but hope that he is utilised as a squad player rather than a certain starter everyweek.
2 clubs have come in and shown interest in aquiring his services but the money they were offering was insulting or is it just that we are naive and think that he is worth more, when he isnt?.

if we are fortunate to sign charlie adam in the summer and it comes down to him or lucas in the team, well adam win's hands down for me.

Maddock in the mirror , obvious bullsh!t. Listen thommo lad , thing is most people have admitted that they were wrong about Lucas and can atleast give the lad a bit of credit and admit that he has improved . Is he an improvement on alonso and mascherano , probably not . He's what we have now though and he's the best at what he's doing . Next season we may have bought new midfielders who are better , well we'll see wont we and Lucas will have to step up or lose out . All them managers can't be wrong surely and you right .

Agreed.

In fact credit where credit is due to Rafa Benitez. Throughout all the season where we unreservedly berated the boy, Benitez stuck by him and always claimed he was a great player.

Now obviously a lot of the progression seen in Lucas has come from experience in age, but you cannot take away from the fact that Benitez stuck by him and provided the opportunities for his development. Without that he would never of had the season he is having now.

Thats the thing about football though, the long term is always far more important even though a lot of fans are miserable after one loss or ecstatic after one win and calling for certain players to play or certain players to be dropped.

Im proud to say that all Liverpool managers have always focused on whats best for the club in the long term...with or without them.

I still cant believe that thread we had awhile back were some people voted that changing the manager was a higher priority than new owners.   :D

The lads done better but 5 years is a heck of a deal and commitment which personally I dont think hes worth. Maybe a 3 year tops but not tied in for 5. At this point I dont doubt hes one of our better options in that position but frankly hes has no competition whatsoever. I hope he goes on to be the standard of player we need to progress this football team over the period of his deal, I really do, but somehow I dont see him being a key piece in a side that can genuinely return this football club back the top end of English football.

Absolutely made up for the lad. Has worked his cotton socks off for this and the dedication he's shown to Liverpool is now justifiably rewarded. Hope the trust Kenny and co have shown in him might finally convince the rest of his 'home' based critics to get off his back and actually see the 'good' he brings to our play

Dont paint yourself into a corner with "All them managers can't be wrong surely..." because all managers are wrong alot of the time. I accept that he has improved, but some might say he couldnt get any worse.
He is at best an average player and the only thing that will convince me hes not is if he stops being an average player.
Until then, it is what it is

He's far better than average, average would be Jay Spearing, Ryan Babel or Paul Konchesky.  Average isn't good enough for Liverpool, Lucas is.  He's bossed midfield numerous times this season average players don't do that.
