But thats the problem. If he was shirking we could say he deserves to be dropped.
Unfortunately were getting the most he can give. Which isnt that much

watch yesterdays game on LFCTV.. and hone in on him. Forget the game.. watch his non movement following a pass. Hes a passive individual, knows his limitations, and hides because of them.

I have
But Im not sure he hides. I just think he thinks hes playing well. His movement off the ball is :censored:. He ball watches constantly and invariably comes in from the side or back which leads to free kicks, usually in dangerous situations.
Hes not a dishonest player. Just not very good.

Hiding is not immediately making yourself available. Tomorrow at Sunderland... watch lucas, almost sacrifice watching the game.. just watch him. He will make a pass.. and then walk beside (often behind) an opponent. The subsquent player in possession then has no options, dispossessed.. play breaks down. Ray Houghton was among the first to spot this with lucas...and he termed it hiding. When Alonso made a pass... he instantly scampered into space to be open to recieve it again. He took control, dictated midfield...lucas has never done that..yes because of his lack of ability (which is why he will end up at a Fulham, Stoke)... but also because hes a passive individual who hides on the field. The damning thing with us is we have no one else, so until the summer, he will play.

I think youre giving him too much credit
Hes not good enough to hide. What you see is what you get. Thats how good he is right there on the pitch. For me hes absolutely trying his best. Hes average at best and sh'ite at worst.
Hiding is what Johnson does...

Do see your point...ie.hes just not very good. But on top of that, because hes aware of his lack of talent, he avoids 'attempting' to take control by not constantly making himself open.

We'll agree to disagree
:;):

We agree hes sh'ite.. thats the main thing.

LUCAS SIGNS NEW DEAL

Liverpool today confirmed midfielder Lucas Leiva has signed a new long-term contract at Anfield.

The 24-year old, who signed for the Reds in July 2007, has put pen to paper on a new deal which secures his future with the Reds.

Director of Football Damien Comolli said: "I am very, very pleased. We have been talking for a few months now, ever since I arrived at the club.

"One of the first things I did after I arrived was to look at the contract situation and to see where Lucas was at. I knew we had to do something quickly because we couldn't afford to lose him and didn't want to lose him.

"If you look at his playing record he started 46 games last year in all competitions and this year it will be between 45 and 50. He is exactly what we want. He has the right mentality, quality and attitude. He understands what this club is all about and even though the discussions went on for quite a long time he always said to me 'I want to stay and we need to find a solution'.

"Considering his performances on the pitch with us and with Brazil, and his attitude around the place - off the pitch he's a great professional, totally committed and dedicated and it's always team first when you speak to Lucas - that's why we wanted him to stay. The celebration at Sunderland with the players after he'd had his baby shows that the other players were very happy for him and shows he is a team player.

"He could have gone to many clubs because he is highly rated around Europe, but he always said he wanted to play for Liverpool."

After securing the transfer window signings of Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez in January, Comolli insists today's news is a further example of the Reds moving in the right direction.

"This shows stability," he added. "What we did during the window showed ambition and what we have done with Lucas - and other players we are talking to - shows stability. We want to keep the core of the players we have who are performing and performing well."

Manager Kenny Dalglish was equally as pleased that his Brazilian midfielder had agreed a new deal.

"We are delighted," said the boss."He is a smashing lad to have around the football club but he hasn't been signed for that, he has been signed because of what he does on the pitch. Certainly since I came in he has been a great asset to the team and has done tremendously well.

"He's got wee Pedro to look after and now a new contract as well, and we're delighted for him because he's a really honest, genuine fella and that's reflected in the way he plays.

"He's happy to be here and play for the club and he's getting everything that he deserves at the moment - including being a fixture in the Brazilian team - because of what he's done on the pitch."

Just because we lost Masch and Alonso doesn't mean Lucas has to take the mantle of replacing either one, nor does it rule out signing centre midfielders...

In fact this season its reached the point where if he's not on the pitch I'm ready for us to lose, though I'm probably statistically wrong in that matter but the sentiment remains
All round the fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play!)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
'Bout the glory, round the Fields of Anfield Road

I've been very critical of Lucas in the past but he's earned my respect. I'm pleased he's signed a new contract. Hopefully he can celebrate with a goal at the weekend.

What a silly post,

surely he improved drastically this season with a couple of performances he put in, everyone can see that. He deserves a new contract because of his performances this season, it is not difficult to see. He may not be a world beater ala Steven Gerrard, or as good as Xabi Alonso or Mascherano, but at least he doesn't sulk, or cry and he gives 100% playing for the red shirt.

In a way you just supported my post.

You agree he is less then Alonso and Mash and As his strong points you mention he doesn't Sulk or cry ,you didn't write he is a top tackler ,top passer ,Very strong nor fast...But he gives a 100%...Well i would say that this is the minimum requirement for an LFC player but not enough to be LFC future...Unless of course we aim to maintain an ok ,avarage team with very modest ambitions.

???

In what way we maintain an ''ok'', ''average'' team with Lucas? His performance this season speaks for itself, and when you usually have a player who is working his socks off every game and showing improvements then he merits a new contract, its that simple. I really don't need to explain to you his abilities, everyone can see what he does best and he showed some maturity this season that also merits himself to stay on the team sheet. He might not be in the team sheet if we do go out and buy a world beater, but at least we can rely on him when he is needed because he does a very solid job.

Great news, he's going to be a big part of the future for us imo.  He'll shine once we finally buy some more footballers this summer.

ok let's agree to disagree ,in my vision of a future liverpool the Kuyt's and Lucas's of the world have no part. I give them full credit for being hard working commited players but leaving those sentiments behind i think we can find just as commited other players with much more talent ,which can jumpstart our Legacy once again.

I've made my arguments for keeping Kuyt pretty clear, any decision to sell Kuyt would be absolutely fool hardy IMO and it shouldn't even be getting discussed. I can see an argument for Lucas but if you were Man U would you sell Darren Fletcher because IMO Lucas is to us what he is to them, not pretty, but effective

You can argue whether or not he's good enough to be in the starting 11 but I'd sure as hell be happy with him as a squad player
