if you read back in this thread Lee, you will see that my reference is with regards to the word "Uruguayan". "useful" is an exception and i'm sure there are a few more but seeing the original poster, the title states "An American Werewolf in London".

unless someone can correct me, it should apply to "Uruguayan" as well. so it should be "an Uruguayan" and not "a Uruguayan" :talktothehand

haha well im staying on my side of the fence.. as a guy said earlier maybe its pronunciation.. if you pronounce it "yuruguay" then even though it's a vowel it isn't pronounced as a vowel.. i just think it doesn't sound right is all and i'de say im about 95% certain that in this day and age "A Uruguayan" is the acceptable term.. maybe it shouldn't be but i'de all but gaurantee that's what most people over here would say so even if it's supposed to be "An Uruguayan" over misuse will have undoubtedly changed it to "A Uruguayan".

lol well as long as people "rnt typn lyk dis" i honestly don't care about grammar on a forum.

the word 'an' is used phonetically - its based on the sound when spoken, not how it is written on paper

yeah it's down to fifa/uefa that make the rules to suit chelsea or manu. as in, Suarez is 'Europa' cuptied cos he's played in the 'champions league'. however Torres CAN play in the 'Champions league' cos he's only played in the 'Europa' competition. go figure.

This is kind of strange for me. Ivan Rakitic played the first half of this season in Schalke who played and still play in the Champions League, then in the winter trasfer window he signed for Sevilla, who played in the Europa League against Porto and lost. Ivan Rakitic started in that match. So he played for Schalke in the Champions League and then went in Sevilla who played in the Europa League and wasnt cup tied

Isnt it the same thing with Suarez now? Only he cant play. I dont get it.

i could be wrong but im sure it's due to Ajax having registered him in their Europa League squad, and nothing to do with him having played in champions league. thought i read that at some point although i wouldn't quote me on it.. it's just what seems to make most sense is all.

Torres wasn't registered in a champions league squad by us so could play for chelski regardless of his Europa League appearances.

haven't a clue about Rakitic though, but i'de guess it's because he freshly registered for the Sevilla Europa squad only having previously been registered for the Schalke CL squad.

as i say.. probably wrong, just makes most sense to me.

If Ajax wasn't in the Europa League after getting dumped from the Champions League, then Suarez would have been included with us.
However, with Ajax in the Europa league and already registered Suarez before moving to us then he is ineligible for the Europa League

Suarez played for Ajax in the CL but they finished 3rd in their group so went down to the EL, he can't play for two different teams in the same competition.

The spaniard played for us in the EL so is eligible to play for the cockneys in the CL.

But Suarez never played in the EL. He was registered for the CL, does that mean if his team finishes third in the Champions League and goes to the Europa League, he is automaticly registered for the Europa League? That's stupid he didnt even play for Ajax in the EL. But it doesnt matter anyway, he cant play and that's it.
