Simply because people have got this long term project thing into their heads. Also, if we do get into the top four some people (not mentioning any names obviously) will say that the team would have got there anyway, last season was clearly just a blip, anybody could have got us back up there etc etc.
Infact, if we continue to win games then it is only a matter of time before this becomes the accepted mantra, mark my words.

Totally 100% agree with this. The squad is weak in places, but the team is good enough to challenge strongly for a Champions League slot. Obviously should Torres or Gerrard get long term injured we would become big outsiders, but given an even run we should be right in the mix in my view. See sixth and missing out on fourth by 2 points is very different to 6th and 11 points off it.

Like I say though, I think we will replace Roy whatever happens. That said, if he did get us into the top four he could consider himself unbelieveably unlucky to get the push. My guess is he'd have to get top four AND win a trophy to both keep his job and win over enough of the doubters to consider himself supported by the majority of fans.

Mick that's the thing ....I think your underestimating the fans if Roy Hodgson gets us to fourth or there abouts... I would expect him to have earned an extended stay without a doubt ..and when I say fans I am not talking about the general consensus on a forum I am talking about the fans that go home and away and will give their total support to the team and its manager ....because like it or not this is where it will be noticed over the coming months the media will pick up on this especially if the support remains as audible as it was on Sunday
I have said before its not solely  down to results, for me personally its about building an affinity with the fans and its been  a while now since the manager has discredited anyone in his press conferences ..... but for me he needs to build a siege mentality not dissimilar to the ones Taggart used to employ up the East lancs ......
the "Them and Us " theme has worked brilliantly down the years for both teams ....any managers first job should be getting the fans on side and then he will be given time to provide the results .....Hodgson clearly felt this secondary and if that was the case he was poorly advised ,but like I said he seems to have realised now....especially given his praise of the fans and travelling support in Tonights Echo .....

Sorry Big mick but thats total rubbish - people have stated that minimum expectations is to get into the top 4 - if he manages that then he has done the job required and will continue to do the job and people will be happy for him to continue . You coming up with theorys with no backing - people just want Liverpool to be a successful club and to be amongst the elite of europe no matter who the manager  - if Hodgson manages that then im pretty sure 99.99999999999% of the people would have no problem if he carried on managing Liverpool . How about put the matches away and be sensible for a minute and realise the short of things your suggesting - its the sort of suggestions that cause trouble on the boards and you know full well they do but continue to do them .

If your going to come up with something then please do back up the suggestion or theory with some evidence and proof - if not how about give it a rest .

WTF are you on about, seriously  ??? I'm guessing as to where we'll finish, and I'm guessing as to what the owners will do, and I'm guessing as mto how the fans will react. How can I prove it you doughnut?

Look, I've already said I think we'll finish sixth. I've already said that if we do the manager will be replaced (rightly). As to whether or not fans will be happy if we finish top four, my guess that they won't is based on how fans have reacted to our upturn in form. Already people are suggesting it's down to a change in ownership and is feck all to do with the manager, and they haven't even got started yet.

If YOU are saying that top four will mean you'll be supportive of the manager being given another season then great, fair play. I'm simply guessing what the general concensus will be. I don't know it any more than you do. If you don't agree then cool, why all the angst?

See its posts like this that really stir it up.

Yesterday we had some saying we must win the next 3 games.
That was putting pressure on the players and the manager.

While i agree we want to win the 3 games we have to be realistic.
We picked up 4 points from them last season and while last season isnt always what we want to be looking back at or comparing. It is still relevant.
Our away form last season was shocking and at the start of this it has been similar.
So trips to Wigan and Stoke are not easy games at all, and while they are winnable if we dont win it shouldnt be all Roy has fecked up blah blah blah.

Of course we have to win the next 3 games...

In fact we have to win every game!

Under Rafa it's the same, under Roy it's the same... That's what I expect from liverpool

I'm C-O-N-S-I-S-T-E-N-T...

but shhhhhhhhh the players and the manager will be under pressure...

And the point I'm making is how exactly are you guessing what the general consensus will be IF we get 4th . The angst comes from what your actually guessing - the idea that fans are that against Hodgson it doesn't matter if we finish in the top 4 - are you getting that from small fan base on a forum or from the actual fans at the game . Did you hear the support we have given over the last couple of games ?! Widen your eyes and realise not all the views on here represent the majority .

Well I'm not getting it from going to the game because I don't go, but you already knew that :;):. It's not exclusively off the forum, we show the Liverpool matches in the pub and there's plenty of fellow OOTers that I get to talk to, as well as a couple of lads who go regularly.

But in isn't about fans being "anti" Hodgson (and you seem to want to make this into an argument and I can't understand why). It's about fans having an ambition for the club that rightly or wrongly they don't feel Roy Hodgson will fulfill. Why is that sooooo difficult to understand? I mean in all honesty, do you think characters like bav and Ciggy will think that Rafa wouldn't have got us third if Roy gets us fourth .

But if you don't agree with me, like I say fair enough.

And its statement like the one about Bav and Ciggy that do nothing but light the flames . Maybe people don't think Hodgson is the man for long term BUT I'm going to be happy in the guess that the majority would be happy to let him continue as manager if we got to 4th - which was the point I was trying to make since you keep suggesting that Hodgson will get the push still even if we do get 4th and all because of the fans

I don't mean to be pedantic, but where's YOUR proof that the majority of fans will feel that? Of course you don't have any (aside from the "well I've been at the game etc etc" stuff), it's your opinion.

It's different to mine, that's cool. I actually hope you're right, but both of our opinions are merely guesses.

Yes I will be fully behind the manager if we get 4th. What's wrong with demanding 4th?

Don't worry bigmick, he might just achieve 4th, no need start to build a case yet...
