Ciggy missed this one:

Jamie Carragher: There will be no quick fix for Liverpool FC

JAMIE CARRAGHER today warned Liverpool’s supporters to steel themselves as he warned there will be no quick fix to the club’s current position.

Though the Reds retained their place at the top of Europa League Group K last night with a 0-0 draw against FC Utrecht, Carragher admitted the performance was not up to scratch.

In keeping with many of the performances during the opening stages of the campaign, Liverpool rarely threatened to create a glut of chances and were ultimately happy with a share of the spoils.

But, as Carragher explained, Liverpool are in a transitional period and having experienced the early parts of both the reigns of Gerard Houllier and Rafa Benitez, he expects there will be more bumps to encounter in the coming months.

“It’s a good point,” said Carragher, who captained the side in Steven Gerrard’s absence. “But we all know that we can improve on the performance. In the new format of the Europa League, you’ve got to try and win your home games first of all.

“If you then follow up by not losing your away games, you are doing okay and that’s what we have done but we know we can get better.

“This is a work in progress. We are steadily getting there and if we can get three points at the weekend, we’ll head into the two week break looking forward to the derby.

“I know everyone thinks that when you get a new manager, you start winning every week but in Gerard Houllier’s first season we finished seventh and in Rafa’s we finished fifth.

“It’s not always a case that when you bring in a new manager everything changes – we finished seventh last year because we were the seventh best team in the league.

“We are not all of a sudden going to be pulling up trees left, right and centre. As I said, it’s a work in progress and we have to work through it.”

Gerrard and Carra both chatting sh'ite then?

For me, I want us to win but who will bet their life that we will win against Blackpool with the way we are playing now. I really hope for those who thinks is a good idea to give Roy more games is right as I just wish our club to be just as successful. This is not being negative but is the reality. No one here wants to say "I told you so" as we are all in this together and just don't want us LFC fans to suffer with a problem that can be fixed right now then to drag till it is too late to do something.

Firing Roy here and now would be letting the players off the hook and they don't deserve this. NONE of them ,not Gerrard not Torres and Not Johnson ,Roy should be given a chance at least till the end of the season and as long as the majority of the problem is Players commitement ,energy and passion getting rid of the manager would be terrible.

I don't understand the mentality of the players and manager.  At the end of last season Carra said that we'd straight back to challenging for Top 4 this season.

Now him, Gerrard, Reina and Roy are all downplaying our chances of any success.  Torres is the only one that said we're not far from the top teams.

This small team mentality seems to be bet into the players/managers heads.  And i don't like it...

Surely we need some more belief than this.

it was an ok post until you put that bit in. i'll bet you aquilani isn't juve's best player for a start, however much ball fizzing he does. and congratulations on being proven right on the striker issue, nobody else believed we needed another one, of course... just you.

ye u maybe all knew about the striker situation but u was all making out nando would come back strong and i knew he wouldnt. So lets say he carries on in the same vain till christmas we end up in the bottom six. He then says he wants out and leaves for chelsea in the january transfer window. What the feck are we left with then. I see the bigger picture u obviously dont!

The thing is you can't fire the whole team and thus you fire the manager. This is a sad truth but happens everywhere in professional sports.

As for letting the players off the hook, I just want us to win and there are so many unknown. I only goes by what i see. We are playing a wrong system with the wrong player. Unless he changes his system to suit the player rather than the reverse, we will continue to be sh.lt. if you are Gerrard, how would it feel to have the manager asking the whole fecking team to stay back and defend.

One observation from all the recent newspaper that had interviewed different players such as the article above with Carra, Reina and just about everybody else, all saying it will take time and it is a work in progress etc....These are all Bull. They are just finding excuse for not performing. So, they are asking fans to just sit back and let them to suck without even trying and not expecting more? They should come out and they will turn around this quickly rather than say, well, it will take more time and don't expect too much right away. WTF is this. Can't believe the players are saying this...

Don't get me wrong i also think Roy is playing the wrong system and not with our best players but one thing i can't accept and is obvious no matter what system we play is the lack of passion from the players ,That is our trademark Passion ,Commitment ,playing aggresive pressing not quitting for a second ,i just can't see it this year from the players. Just makes me sick seeing players not making movement ,not running there AssOff..And it's only the beginning of the season they should have been on their top motivation.

I totally agreed your point of view and that's why I had been saying we need an inspirator. I strongly believe having someone like Kenny as interim can help motivate the players. Or have someone who can challenge the players. I mean Roy is too nice a guy i believe. He is just afraid to bench players who is under performing like Carra. Why not give the kids a chance like Pacheco or Spearing or Babel. Roy is too conservative and just playing obvious. This is what we need when things are bad. If we play are asses off and lose, i accept that but if you dont bench players, they will just take it for granted and we have to accept that it was a mistake to hire Roy to begin with. Look at the players that we have, it is a disgrace with the calibre that they have. Just don't want it to be too late by the time irreversable damage is done.

To me we are playing virtually the same tactics as what we did under the old manager.

this is it for me. exactly.

nothing has improved from last season, it's just stayed exactly the same.

- good purchases along with dodgy purchases.

- playing players out of position

- persisting with the 2 defensive midfielders axis

- not buying a striker

- negative tactics

- late substitutions

- inaccurate / silly comments after the game

- boring football (for the record I know that rafa didn't always play boring football, but wolves/stoke/portsmouth etc last season were dire performances - and we're playing exactly the same football as we did then)

its like the english version of Rafa Benitez, nothing has changed at all.

I am in the camp that thought it was the right time to change the manager, but I am not liking this particular change at the moment.

everything he said.

certainly agree with this bit. Pretty reasonable as well. We've heard it many times but it means nothing until its translated onto the pitch
All round the fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play!)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
'Bout the glory, round the Fields of Anfield Road

This whole group needs ripping up and starting over but whilst the football club is for sale its a patch up job to fill gaps and make do until it changes hands.

Hodgson has tried to tweek a few things and freshen it up but its proving difficult because there is still a core of under achievers and failed footballers plying their trade at Anfield. In an ideal world we would ship them out and pay for replacements but as it stands thats just not possible.

In the short term we have to try and get by with the remains of a failed squad added too with free transfers and a minor dip into the transfer market and make the best of it. Hodgson is clearly trying different things and even at this point some of our games seem like pre season preperation games as he messes around around looking for a winning combination. With what we have to choose from its proving difficult to come up with an answer but all they, and we can do, is keep the faith, and stick by Roy at least for a little while until we can reconsider the whole strategy and gameplan if and when the football club is under new ownership.
