ROY HODGSON - Official Thread

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby bigmick » Wed Sep 29, 2010 11:19 am

Here is the slightly longer version which was posted a couple of days ago:

"Six points from our first six games is not what we wanted," he told LFC Weekly in an exclusive interview this week.

"People who criticise us about it should look at the fixtures we've had. It has been a difficult start. Arsenal at home and then going to play Manchester City, Manchester United and Birmingham away was never going to be easy.

"Not many teams will go to the City of Manchester Stadium, Old Trafford or St Andrew's and win. Those three teams have very good records at home."

Reina also called for patience as he and his teammates, several of whom are still settling in on Merseyside, get used to operating under Roy Hodgson.

"When you have so many changes moving in a new direction under a new boss, things don't happen instantly. It can take between three and six months before you see improvements. Obviously the quicker we adapt and improve as a team the better it will be for everyone.

"That doesn't just happen overnight. Each of us has to adjust to working in a new way. With the passing of each day I get used to it and what the manager wants. It's the same for all of us. We need to be patient."

Talk about absolutely bang to rights. Support the team, support the club, therefore support the new manager.

Agree on that too.  Most managers would love the chance to work with the likes of reina, gerrard, kuyt, carra, torres.

I'm sure Roy is loving working with those players too. He'll probably love it even more once Torres and Kuyt are fit.

Why don't you and the posse just hold your horses until christmas at least. Post up that you don't agree with tactics, selections etc etc, but save the fervently anti Roy rhetoric until a sensible judgement can be made on whether he is likel to be a success or not.

It's almost like some of you are frightened that he actually will crack it, and are mad keen to run him out of town as soon as possible so you can tell us all you were right all along. I really don't get it, let the man prove himself one way or the other and then you'll get all the time in the world for the I told you so's.

We didn't get a striker in the Summer for instance, but we had a wee bit of cash to buy one. Lets have a look see who Roy brings in in the transfer window, you never know it might turn out to be somebody quite good. Our deficiencies at defending crosses is glaringly apparent these days, perhaps he'll bring someone in now he's had more than a couple of weeks to assess the squad.

I don't know what some of you expect sometimes. You think he's going to come in, lose Masherano, get the rest of his World Cup players back a week before the season starts, assess all the academy youngsters and various hangers on, ship some out, bring some in (all while making a profit), get them all to gel instantly and play like Barcelona from the off. Then you want us to go to Man Utd and give em a good hiding, you want us to go to City and do better than Chelsea did, spank Arsenal at Home and break Birminghams year long unbeaten home record.

I want that too, it's just that I'm a bit more realistic.

absolutley.  :buttrock

Spent most of the page before off topic and been an old ar$e too, pretty sh1tty if ya ask me.

Roy knew he needed a striker but the right man wasn't there. He wont rush in and panic buy either which is nice. He'll be searching until January then I'm sure he'll have someone lined up. Same goes for the defense. personally (that means in MY opinion) I don't think Carra can keep up. Although he has shown on occasion he still has the minerals I don't think he'll see the season out as an effective defender. So, Roy needs to have this in mind cos either at the end of this season or the next season he's gonna be replacing Jamie.

The fact is, them f*cking Yanks sucked the life outta him.  3 years working with them proved to be too much.

As of July, Roy is now accountable for results on the field, tactics, man management and most importantly...results.

I had more problems with the criticism on Rafa in the past, because of the simple reason he was the Liverpool manager.

Now he's gone, I don't have problems he becomes a scapegoat provided the pundits and some fans don't make the new manager a scapegoat aswell.

For me, the problem of Liverpool hasn't been the manager. Not now, nor yesterday. The problem are the owners, and that's why I concur with Pepe, he needs time, 6 months at least.

I definitly agree.  The owners have always been the problem.
And yes, Roy does need time.  And he will certainly get it.

But Rafa Benitez is no longer part of Liverpool.  If we struggle or lose on the pitch, it isn't his fault.  And if Roy wins a trophy, we won't go thanking Rafa.

My point is, its all on Roy now.  He has inherited a team far better then what he has managed in the past.  Its Roys job to be accountable for that team.

It will take about 6 months before the team is comfortable playing the way Roy wants them.  But we still need results during that time.  And Roy needs to make sure we get them results or his job will become incredibly difficult.

In 6 months time playing the way we're playing, Roy will be lucky to still be here nevermind the players getting comfortable with his tactics. It's September, and what odds would have been given for a game against Blackpool for being as critical as what it's now turned out to be. Fail to win against them, and no one should have any complaints of the criticism that will undoubtedly follow. The teams we have had to play at the start of this season is no excuse. It wouldn't have been for the previous manager, and it's certainly not for this one. If you're a top four side and a so called top manager, you take these challenges as they come. Failing them raises question marks.

1. That's assuming we continue to play exactly the same for the next six months. An unlikely scenario I think, but as it suits your doom and gloom mentality I'm not surprised you choose to assume it. If we didn't improve at all, I agree Roy will be gone at the end of the season. We would probably get relegated as well. Fortunately, I think it is unlikely.

2. The odds against Blackpool at home in game seven being vital would have been tiny. The odds that we would have been looking for our second win of the season would have been higher, but not as high as you and some others would like to make out. We didn't beat any of Arsenal Home, Man Utd away or Man City away last season either (infact we have a poor record in all three games) so failing to win them was no surprise really. Equally, Birmingham away is a fixture that nobody else has managed to win for a year, so no real shock there. WBA Home was a gimme and we won it (which is more than you can say for Arsenal), while Sunderland Home was tricky and we didn't.

3. An utterly ridiculous statement. Doesn't even warrant an answer.

4. We aren't a top four side, we're a top seven side who's got dreams and aspirations of becoming a top four side.

Other than that, good post.

wow... Roy Hodgson's thread has reached 131 pages within 3 months of him being a manager...

Considering people post more when they are critical than when they are satisfied, that's gotta say something whether one likes it or not...

Could just as easily say maybe some are desperate not to concede they were wrong all along. Everything we have seen so far bar a few moments of genius from our best 2 players has been poor and the only thing really you have to defend yourself with is the fact that we are only a few games into the season. It's just pure hope based on nothing really. Don't get me wrong ill support any first 11 that goes out on that pitch and pulls on the shirt but there isn't anything wrong with making observations at this stage. But now you are saying at least wait till xmas? Before it was 'give him a year at least'. I suppose now it's starting to sink in with even the most stubborn ones.

I think thats the subtlety that most people are missing.
There is no doubt that Benitez had lost he plot for whatever reason. Those who say Roy is not good enough are dying to be proven right so they can say "I told you so".
Others, me included, arent saying he is or he isnt. Were merely saying "lets support him and give him a chance to see if hes good enough". That is to admit that I hope he is good enough if given a fair crack of the whip.
We simply dont know yet, no matter what some say as fact, whether he is capable or not.
