Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

What do you expect guys? Roy was brought in to "steady the ship". Steady the ship means mid-table mediocrity so as far as our board is concerned, at the moment, Roy is par for the course...

hmmm not really sure...

but I do remember a few on here were biggie-ing up Roy saying his superior man-management skill, motivation, arm around the shoulder approach, british mentality, no-nonsense mentality, a breath of fresh air will make sure that we will improve from the previous seasons. I also do remember that there were a quite a number of people who voted we will finish 4th and 3rd and 2nd and so on... I don't suppose you are by any means one of them?

i expected fresh ideas and a positive, adventurous style of play. what im seeing is the team sitting back and inviting pressure, and Roy making comments as if we're some small club who find teams like Sunderland or Northampton tough opposition. i wanted a change in management as i felt the previous regime had gone stale, and i thought things will be taking a turn for the better, especially when Cole and Meireles joined us. but sadly i feel we've taken a step backwards. we really ought to pressure the opponents, harass them if they have the ball, and be more attacking. Roy isnt maximizing the attacking talent at his disposal.

So if his tactics are no different than the previous manager, did Benitez have a small club mentaliy too?

It's not just the tactics it's the attitude towards these games.  The comments after the result today.  The comments after the Birmingham game.  Liverpool FC should not be pleased to avoid defeat v these teams.

I would like him to say certain things. I would also like him not to say certain things. Like every manager weve had.
He obviously is a non confrontational person who thinks what hes saying will be approved by the fans. He is trying to put a positive spin on hings so hes not constanly moaning about performances and results
By the way what would you have had him say for each of the games you mentioned?

That we are not happy with the point and must do better.

Mate it doesnt take a genius to see that Hodgson has the side set up just as his set up all the other sides his been at. One of the concerns about RH was he would manage Liverpool the same way his managed Fulham and that just wont cut it.

It was not long ago that we schooled big teams like Real Madrid, Barcelona and Inter how to play football. How I miss those days. It's just going to go down hill from here I'm afraid.

I have seen nothing so far that makes Roy such a great manager but we will see. We have players that should dominate teams like Sunderland but we just let them come at us.

Exactly.

"superior man-management skill, motivation, arm around the shoulder approach, british mentality, no-nonsense mentality, a breath of fresh air"

Those things it seemed were the missing link between us and winning the title as player wise we already had a 'title winning capable squad'

If anything we look to have gone backwards under him.

Last season, apparantly we had a side capable of winning the league, but had a manager that couldn't. Now it's down to the terrible squad Roy has enherited, and suddenly the team isn't good enough anymore?

Might be an idea to dig one of those quotes out I reckon.

I can remember a few from you and Saint. Obviously I can't be arsed to trawl through this place to find them mate but ER is right. All of a sudden it's the squad.

Well that squad pretty much finished on a records point total a few years ago. And by the looks of things even last years 7th is going to seem a tall order for this season. Id hate to think how we would be performing should we pick up injuries to Torres and or Gerrard.

I feel the same. From day one we've played ultra-defensive football and that isn't enough if we're to make the top four. We need to be laying siege to sides like West Brom and creating a lot more away to sides like Birmingham. At home to Arsenal, while we fought an admirable rearguard action in the second half, in the first half we simply did a solid job absorbing pressure without staking a real foothold in the game. Playing Man City away, while you don't necessarily expect to win, you certainly don't expect to get pummeled 3-0. We've been all shades of sh!te so far, and though it's early days in the race for fourth we're already five points off Man City - who currently occupy the spot. I'm not sure how far further back we can afford to be before that objective begins to look distinctly unrealistic.

i hope to see a more positive approach from both the players and especially the manager, who should stop making such a defeatist attitude with his comments to the media.

In fairness, I don't think they did say that. They said the squad was of a good enough standard to challenge for the title, slight difference. In hindsight, I don't think it truly was good enough to mount a serious challenge last term, and I think our performances this season go some way to bearing that out once more, since the managers have changed but the underlying hasn't. Certainly if Poulsen is a vast improvement on Lucas, and with the additions of Joe Cole and Meireles making us a marginally better squad than last term, then you would surely expect the standard of the squad to have remained fairly similar to when it was considered good enough to challenge for the title; but apparently it's only good enough to get us fifth or something. I'm not sure how else you account for such a discrepancy other than to say that it wasn't up to scratch to begin with.
