So if his tactics are no different than the previous manager, did Benitez have a small club mentaliy too?

It's not just the tactics it's the attitude towards these games.  The comments after the result today.  The comments after the Birmingham game.  Liverpool FC should not be pleased to avoid defeat v these teams.

I would like him to say certain things. I would also like him not to say certain things. Like every manager weve had.
He obviously is a non confrontational person who thinks what hes saying will be approved by the fans. He is trying to put a positive spin on hings so hes not constanly moaning about performances and results
By the way what would you have had him say for each of the games you mentioned?

Roy is ok at setting up a defensive side. But he doesn't seem to be too good at getting teams to attack and press teams. It's a recurring characteristic of all his teams and the general style of football they play: ugly

Rafa had a high energy midfield constantly pressing and closing down.

Roy almost invites them to play football as they want. No closing down, no energy.

spot on!

Thommo his tactics are totally different from the previous coach, the only thing that is similar is the 4231 formation. He defends a good 20yds further back, he doesnt press, the fullbacks doesnt get forward as much and instead of trying to contain the opposition in their own half he tres to sucker them forward to counter attack, which fails because any team that comes to Anfield now plays deep, isolating the loan striker while pressurizing the central midfield players knowing they have no wide options so will be forced to go long , where Torres is on his own against 2 centre halfs

leave Rafa out lad

you're determined to use him as a yardstick arent ya?

lets put it this way - there were countless discussions over whether Rafa should stay or go last season. A vast majority of those who wanted him to stay wanted so because of the politics at the club. They were fully aware that we couldnt afford someone better so what was the point. Obviously there were many other reasons but it was certainly my main one

you ignored that and seemed confident in the fact that someone better would be found and you were determined to be able to say I told you so at the end. Its looking wobbly now and now you're digging at Rafa to show that Hodgy isn't 'that bad' while not acknowledging the fact he's been gash

thats my take on what your posts have been suggesting anyway

Of course hes being used, not just by me, as a yardstick. He was our previous manager for fu'cks sake. People didnt want him to go. It has caused a split in the fanbase. We are still arguing about it now, no matter what peole say to the contrary. Whether you, me, or anyone likes it or not, to a greater or lesser degree, depending on you POV, we are in a state BECAUSE of the Benitez and to want to airbrush him out of our past because you want to focus your anger and frustration on the current manager says more than you think.
Roy Hodgson is not THE problem weve got at this moment. He may well be one of them, due to his not understanding the size of the job he has taken on and how to handle certain situations. But we have OTHER problems as well which you should try and focus on instead of just concentrating on the manager.

I agree with that.

His tactics are very counterattack style. He lets them get into a comfort zone with posession were they will gradually commit more players forward in hope that they will screw up and we will take advantage and score goals on the break.

That tactic can work. But with the team we have it wont. We cant defend crosses at all and we dont double up on their wingers anymore. Our team also lacks pace. In our starting lineup the only fast player is Torres.

Counterattack only works if its FAST else the other team will just regroup.

We need to be doing the exact opposite of what we are doing now IMO. We should be the ones pressing them and forcing them to feed off our mistakes.

Although I don't place much significance on the media handling side of things, you would have to say that if Rafa had said half of the stuff Roy's come out with so far he'd have been absolutely slaughtered for it. Can you imagine if he'd described Reading as "formidable opposition". We'd never hear the end of it and yet they're a damn sight better than the team of plumbers that beat us midweek.

I think you're probably right, and I think he got slaughtered for it. He never described any of them (let alone a league two outfit) as "formidable" though, that's taking it to new levels but you won't find the same people pointing that out.

And you won't find the media picking up on this either, since they know Roy is a gentleman. When he says 'formidable', the media say 'ah Roy's being nice as usual'.

Pseronally, I don't like those sorts of comments one bit, especially at home to a mid-table team at best.

Those teams all park a bus in front of the net. Yes, they are "difficult" to beat, or at least break down.

Roy's post match interview was like his managing a small club with small aspirations... Makes me think wtf have we got ourselves into! Are we going to only get europa entertainment and mid table finishes now??!
