A midfielder could hardly have made less of a contribution to the attack...That said, he does intercept the ball and position himself reasonably well and his ability to pass the ball five-yards, both sideways and backwards is unparalleled, IMHO.

I agree with you but I don't think it will be the definitive statement some might think.  From what I gather, Lucas will not be returning from the Brazil set-up until tomorrow and so may not feature in Roy's plans for Sunday.

Totally disagree. When rafa finally let him off the reins towards the end of last season he started showing his real potential. Even after that people are still giving him c.rap. Basically, the general consortium(!), felt our squad has been to thin for some time. I still think we need someone else as well. I have serious doubts about Spearing.

yes but do you think ancelloti, ferguson, wenger, mancini, o'neil, redknapp, del bosque, mourinho, etc. etc. would put him in the first 11? i doubt it.
i don't understand how saying benitez and hodgson picking him means he's an amazing player by default. these managers also thought voronin and kevin davies were awesome respectively.

i think lucas' regular inclusion in the starting 11 last season and rafa's justification for it by saying 'the balance is good' while we were losing games to p1ss poor opposition was one of the key reasons we did so badly last season. he's a decent (youngish) player, nothing more. should be used as part of a rotation system and fielded if - and only if - tactically necessary.... not every game. he may get 'stuck in' more than aquilani but aquilani's ball retention and use of it when in possession is light years better so he wouldn't be required to get 'stuck in' as much as lucas is.

against tough opposition:

     poulsen    lucas
gerrard   aquilani   cole
             torres

that's the only line up there's space for him other than being backup to poulsen sitting behind 2 of gerrard/aquilani/cole in the middle
we've only won it 5 times

I cant quite remember whether I have said this before ...but I like Lucas and the manager seems to reciprocate those sentiments :D

I never said he was an amazing player by default. He is a good solid player and an important member of the squad. I'm sure Woy has seen the big potential (that will only get better). Lets hope now Cole is here, Gerrard can be brought back to CM and that will leave us with 2 to pick from Ged, poulsen, lucas and AA. Not a bad headache me thinks :)

If Ged ain't brought back to CM, then I think we need someone else also.

Lucas is shabite-end of, seems many fans have been dumbed down from the previous managers regime.
Football is a relatively simple game and Roy knows it ;)

And no mention of Kuyt, Jovanovic, Maxi, Shelvey, and Babel. Despite me moaning about the lack of strikers, we do seem to have more strength in depth than last season. Though, that's not very hard.

he is good enough to keep as a squad player but shouldnt be anywhere near the starting line up if everyone is fit.
He is not a bad player but doesnt offer enough to justify a position in such a key area of the pitch.

Agreed, squad player at best, decent backup and a good option to bring as a 2nd half substitute when we need to press the ball and close down. His work rate is excellent.
