well he has been Roy's captain in pre-season so far , so he obvioulsy thinks something of the lad . As did the previous manager and the current Brazil manager . Can't be all bad i reckon .

If he were good enough for Brazil he would have part taken in the biggest footballing event that has just gone by. As Mr Fowler said on the last page, he is only playing in friendlies for Brazil now so the new manager can drop a few names and make a point. Like Mick said, if Lucas is the Brazilian pinnacle of midfielders in Brazil right now; they're in trouble.

As for Benitez seeing something in him, let's not go there. The only time Lucas has been a consistent player in our time was the year we finished 7th and Rafa sacked. Before anyone has kittens accusing me of blaming Lucas solely on our finish I don't, but his inclusion in the side was one of the reasons we failed miserably.

Difference with Roy I hope is, he may give Lucas a clean slate to prove his worth. But I honestly doubt or at least I'd be mortified that when Lucas is playing in the side this season and is shown to be a weak link. That Roy won't have the stubbornness and ignorance to persist with the Brazilian and change things around if it's not working..
Football is a relatively simple game and Roy knows it ;)

Realistically he is a squad player.

Yes he improved last season and did ok.
No he isnt sh!t as some have made out in the past.
But he isnt good enough to be playing week in and week out in a key position.
He doesnt offer enough to the team.
If i was Roy i would be going all out for Ireland if he is available. I know that he is more of an attacking midfielder but he is a very good footballer.
I would be happy having 2 centre midfielders that are actual players who are good on the ball with good footballing brains.
Players that can spot a pass early and put the right weight on it 9 times out of 10.
Thats how you open teams up and how you keep posession better.
Lucas and Mascherano are both guilty of losing posession cheaply far too frequently for my liking.

Totally agree with this, obviously the Steven Ireland bit in particular :D Steven Ireland is going to be this seasons Darren Bent, you mark my words.

Read a newspaper article today, probably syndicated, where Lucas claims himself that he can replace Masch. Now, I don't want to make this a Masch thread either, but for Lucas to believe HIMSELF that he's as good a DM as Masch means he's either a) on drugs, or b) takin' the pi$$.

did you read about him saying he wanted to be captain?
All round the fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play!)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
'Bout the glory, round the Fields of Anfield Road

I personally like the best young player of last season ... voted as such by like minded fans and apparently ... Mr Hodgson (who I have been led to believe is extremely astute in his judgment ) holds him in high regard ...as did  Benitez and now we have the Brazillian manager having the effrontery to suggest he is a more than a capable midfielder ....... Go figure ???
Like I said I like Lucas.... and I also like Mr Hodgson more with every passing day..... call it a term of endearment if you will and if the manager can clearly see the Lads qualities who Am I to argue ,lets face it even on a forum such as this Hodgson's preferences hold sway over our own flirtations with the form of one Lucas Leiva ................

Considering the manager never gave many young-ens a chance, and between himself, Insua and N'gog to get young player of the year; Lucas was hardly up against potential world beaters for the accolade was he.

I do concur he was the best out of an average bunch!

Drawn like  the proverbial Moth to the flame :D
I will however reiterate my not to be in any respect swayed stance on the Lad
I like him ...simple when you say it like that really ....it sort of stifles (if not completely stops) the posters waiting eagerly to ambush your post .... I like him ....... it could catch on :D

Would probably make a better captain than a certain Steven Gerrard.

I thought that may be what you meant, but since he's still getting it then you need to be a lot clearer

Seems apparent from these boards that a lot of people make their minds up early and are loathe to change them. Personally I think he is a good player, maybe not Liverpool material, but better than a lot make out. For his development playing in the Liverpool side doesn't help, have a funny feeling I've said this before, because he is in the side with the tackler Mascherano and Gerrard so will invariably be compared.

He certainly needs to work on a few things, a number of our midfielders could do with shooting practice.
