No official sources yet but it looks more than likely. Maybe I should have named this poll 'Potential Signing' either way it looks like average is a safe bet on this player.

Right. This is the main thing.

We signed Mascherano when he was in limbo. LFC and Rafa have raised his profile. Mascherano is very good at what he does, but what has raised his price? Lets consider he was expensive when we signed him.

Not many clubs, when he was at west ham, went out of their way to get him. We took him on loan and then signed him for a good amount of money. This is when he was in limbo remember.

And he is good at what he does. But he is not the only one. If we can get rid of Mascherano for double the price and replace him with a player who can do the same kind of job at a small fraction of that, then I cant help but feel this would be a good move.

Makelele played for Chelsh1t in his early 30's and left in his mid 30's.
the rest is history.

Have we actually bought him then?

Average.

Whether this is a good signing or not will depend a lot on how Roy uses him. I don't expect him to be in our 11 every week, but against good opposition where we need more cover for the back 4 or games where we are playing younger players and could do with a bit of experience (Carling Cup, Europa League) he is a good shout I think. He probably costs a little too much for this sort of role though.

Given their experience together, I think Roy is likely to get the best out of him.

Not sure what this signing says about Roy. I think until we have new owners we've got to expect that money is tight, so I don't think we can say that Roy is buying players for Fulham - he might be, but right now, all we've got is a Fulhamish budget, so it's not like he has any choice. I think Roy is buying inexpensive cover in case Masch goes, rather than waiting for a big offer from Barca/Inter that might come too late for him to get a replacement signed.

Liverpool have agreed a £2m deal with Middlesbrough for goalkeeper Brad Jones and have finalised the £5.5m signing of Christian Poulsen from Juventus.

Liverpool, who hope to agree a new one year contract with defender Jamie Carragher, 32, this week, have reportedly been offered Barcelona midfielder Alexander Hleb as a potential makeweight in a deal for Javier Mascherano but the Argentinian is still expected to join Inter Milan.

Forget Poulsen for a minute, why are we spending 2 million on another keeper?
How about we buy what we need first. We need atleast one striker, come Purslow pull your finger out. WTF are we waiting for? Maybe he cant be botherd now he knows he`s soon out of a job.  ???

Exactly. I have often mentioned how stupid Rafa was to sign Cavalieri for £3m given the number of games Cavalieri was likely to play. It's nice to have a good back-up keeper, but ffs do we need to keep throwing money away at them without signing a top name. They do come on frees, same as outfield players.

Let's have a look at some of the ages and names signed/linked :

Cole (28, 29 in November) FREE
Aurelio (30, 31 in September) FREE, re-signed

Poulsen (30, 31 in February) £5.5m
Jones (28, 29 in March) £2m
Petrov (31) link of £14m combined with Warnock
Warnock (28, 29 in December) link of £14m combined with Petrov
Crouch (29, 30 in January) £15m?
Zamora (29, 30 in January) £10m?
Hleb (29, 30 in May) £8m

I've left out Wilson, Jovanovic and Shelvey as they were reported as signing before Rafa left, even if the deals were finalised/completed after he left. Jovanovic doesn't add balance to the age sheet either (29, 30 in April) So we've also signed two kids who may or may not make it, and another 29+ year old.

I think Carlton Cole was deemed too young so we moved on. Some of the ages and fees considering their ages are frightening. I see Stoke got our rumoured target of last season Kenwyne Jones for £8m compared to whatever the figures quoted last season were. That after he scored just NINE goals in the season, three of them against Wolves, two against Blackburn and one against Wigan. Makes Pubis breaking the club transfer record even more surprising, although it may be part frustration at the market and part to appease fans with a "big signing"

While a lot are rumours, I can't help fearing Hodgson is too set on experience/ tried and tested which is likely to limit the side's potential ie gets you only so far. You need a better blend, and does he not know how to spot talent?!? Houllier spotted talent, decided not to sign Ronaldo and the rest is just another nightmare chapter in history. Some of Rafa's best signings were plucked from the relative unknown but unfortunately he then chopped and changed too much and his transfers became too erratic.

A chain of dubious signings came in the past two seasons, I think most of us wish we'd not spent at all when the names included Degen, Cavalieri, Keane, Riera, N'Gog, Dossena, Kyrgiakos, Rodriguez, Aquilani and Johnson. Some people will rate and say we are much better with them, but for the fees they cost we could have bought two top quality players instead (of that lot, even if you only take last season's incoming expenditure)

well, looks like its confirmed now for about 4.5 million. i think at that price its just about ok, and i'll be hoping he can put in some good performances for us. the last danish midfielder turned out ok and played well into his thirties. this one's in a slightly different mould but lets wait and see, eh?

No one knows how this fella will do until we get a look at him but Hodgson clearly knows him well so we just have to trust his judgement. He certainly brings experience and enjoys the physical side of the game like the man hes replacing. An added bonus is he can operate at centre back as well. Every player of this type gives away free kicks and involved in rucks, thats their job to spoil and upset the opponent. The age to me is nothing given Gerrards 30 and blokes like Scholes down the road is still doing a job at turned 35. 4.5m is a fair price and quite frankly if your paying a player to make tackles and hit people you dont need to be spending massive coin and can save that for boys that can hurt teams at the sharp end of the field.

on the offal:

Poulsen joins the Reds

Liverpool FC are delighted to confirm the signing of Christian Poulsen after the midfielder put pen to paper on a three-year deal.

The 30-year-old, who has been capped 77 times by Denmark, arrives from Italian giants Juventus and will wear the No.28 shirt.

Poulsen has previously worked with Roy Hodgson at FC Copenhagen, where he was given his first big break by the current Reds boss.

going on poulsons previous club record he'll never reach masheranos tally.

Playing for his club, Poulson hasn't been sent off in over 6 years...
