Believe it or not I asked this question to a guy who worked at Melwood and he reckoned that Rafa thought the way forward was to move the line higher up to make the team more attacking hence the selling of Alonso to make money and get Aqua who is happy higher up the pitch than Alonso was.

Rafa actually sacked the guy along with a lot of other coaches last year so I see no reason for him to lie but he also said that in the plan was a big BIG buy to go upfront but the money was used to pay the banks.

errr Robbie Keane was bought BEFORE Aquilani and Rafa back implied later on that the purchase of Robbie Keane was not exactly what he wanted because he was expecting Barry to join that summer...

Don't know whether he was injured or not, but if fit he should get a chance to play now that Cole is out. Otherwise we might aswell try to sell him.

Aqua is so frustrating cos he seems to just disappear the squad quite a bit without anyone knowing where he is.

Probably had another virus

Looks like he is another Kewell with regard to injury....If he's still injured.........There's always Lucas   He's never injured.
Lucas, if you want to win the fans over totally, score the winner against City on monday night!!!!!!!!!

Everyone said last season how thin our squad was. Roy has brought in several astute signings. Why are people so annoyed that AA wasn't playing on Sunday? Surely this bodes well when we have a player of his calibre on the bench. Lucas as well. Too many players last season performed below par as they had no real threat to the starting eleven (Gerrard being top of the list!). I do think we need Fabio back at left-back but if Agger is doing a stellar job there, then let him work his way back into the side. Same with AA. When he's given the chance I'm pretty sure he'll take it with both hands.

Still it's got to be a bit of a concern for the player if he's fit and doesn't make the bench for a big home game against one of our closest rivals. I hope he's got a role to play this season because you can guarantee (if he is surplus to requirements) we will not get more than half of the money back on the player. He may have an opportunity with Cole missing for the next month in the Premier League so here's hoping he grabs it with both hands.

would love to be proven wrong, but for me Auilani has been a total disaster of a signing. 20 million quid for a player who was wasn't fit and was still recovering from a MAJOR INJURY

feck me, if i don't laugh i'd probably cry. What on earth was Rafa thinking....

Anyone got any clue why he didn't make the bench?
He looks like a very good player when he actually plays but thats not very often.

Could probably sell him and get Ireland without making any financial loss.

What's Aquilani worth anyway?

I think we'd struggle to get half our money back, and even then we'd probably only get some loan offers from Italy.

Might as well keep him and see how it pans out. But i'm not holding my breath. We need this guy to play well (and stay fit) for one season before we see anything back in the way of a transfer.
