Martin O'Neill has resigned as Aston Villa manager with immediate effect, the club have confirmed.

O'Neill was seemingly preparing for this weekend's Premier League opener at home to West Ham but a statement from Aston Villa this afternoon announced his departure.

In a statement posted on Villa's website, O'Neill said: "I have enjoyed my time at Aston Villa immensely. It's obviously a wrench to be leaving such a magnificent club.

"I would like to pay tribute to the Villa players, my coaching staff and the Villa supporters for all the support and encouragement they have given both the club and me personally during my time as manager.

"I wish them all the best for the future. I will obviously be assisting the club in the immediate short-term with regard to the handover of my duties."

Kevin MacDonald, reserve team manager, has assumed the role of caretaker manager and will prepare the team for the opening Premier League game of the season against West Ham on Saturday at Villa Park.

Paul Faulkner, chief executive of Aston Villa, said: "The club would like to thank Martin for the great work he has done at Aston Villa over the past four years.

"He has helped to establish the club in the upper echelons of the Premier League, has taken us to Wembley and we have also qualified for European competition for the past three seasons under his management. We wish him the best in the future."

Villa said that no further comment will be made by either the club or O'Neill until further notice.

they haven't spent more than us though. Aquilani and Keane alone cost more then they've spent in the last 2 years. And they've also never been able to buy a player for more than £12m. I aint defending him like but still, i think i can see where he's coming from

Their net spend has been greater than ours over the last few years. Don't want to get into a net/gross spend debate but there it is.

Needs updated, but you get the idea. O'Neill's spent quite a bit over the last few years, whereas we have spent f'uck all thanks to the 'owners':

That doesn't include this summer, when for the second summer running they've spent more than the rest of the PL combined, about £80 million so far.

^ figures can be manipulated anyway you'd like the, that table starts in 2008-09 - 2 mins of research says that it was villas most expensive summer ever, and it's true in that one summer they spent a lot of money. But that was a one-off. 2006-2008, rafa spent £140m, to Villas £50m, and last summer, they spent the equivalent of one of our players, aquilani.

I feel for MON if the rumous abpout young and milner are true. Yes he's a bit of a t0sspot, but no manager should have to put up with that.

(the table also says we've spent more than man uts in the same time period - so what's the point of it?
Added to that villa haven't signed anyone for 12 months.

Villa are screwed.

Ive always thought they've been punching above their weight for the past 2 seasons and that was only because of O'neill.

If they lose Both Milner and Young then they have big changes to make.

There's no manipulation, Villa have spent more than us over the last 2 seasons, a lot more. It's one of many parameters that can be used to get a measure of how a club compares relative to it's competition, to assess where it should be, if it or it's manager is over or underperforming. I agree that in isolation it doesn't give all the information needed to make a judgement (gross turnover, wages, squad value etc. can also be used) but I'd say most people don't realise that Villa have outspent us over the last 2-3 years.

well im absolutly gobsmacked by this , didnt no nothing until ive just turned SSn on. shocked. But thats what happens when owners try and sell players that you wanna keep, And if this is the case i dont blame him for walking .

But that doesn't mean anything really. I mean we've spent more than utd and arsenal in the last 2 years. Using the same arguement, you could Feel sorry for utd as they haven't spent as much as we have in the last 2 years.

Over the last 12 months we've spent more then villa. Over the last 4 years we've spent more than villa.

Just shows you though how long he would of lasted if he was appointed our manager like everyone in the media thought he would months ago, he wouldnt of lasted 5 minutes with these two in charge, his reign would of been shorter than Cloughs :laugh:
