Some others: Javi Martinez, Ever Banega, Sami Khedira, Arturo Vidal, Miguel Veloso (could also fill in at Left Back!), Riccardo Montolivo, Daniele De Rossi (probably will never leave Rome, although Aquilani did), Toulalan, Hernanes (was way overhyped 2 years ago, his club had him play out of position for a while, starting to come back into form as a box-to-box midfielder
If we have to save money, surely one of the Madrid Diarras has to be available, and I don't see how they could ask for too much. Maurice Edu a young American at Rangers (went to University together), looked good in the world cup. Strong in the tackle, not spectacular on the ball, but composed. Another American option would be Michael Bradley, he also had a good world cup and offers a lot (understands the game well, aggressive, strong in the tackle, can create and score goals (scored 16 league goals in Holland one year from midfield)
If we had a bunch of cash, another player similar, probably even better than Veloso is Fiorentina's Vargas. CM isn't his normal position, but he can really play anywhere. Brings so much to the team both in attack and in defense. He is just a great left footed footballer, and we have a serious lack of them around.
And lastly, if we are really short on funds, Tymoshchuk could be useful. Another that could play both DM and LB. And he has great Europa League experience
