It's a big conditional, but assuming he does hand in a transfer request (which would be very un-Xabi), then we have to get a little more realistic over negotiations. Though I'd still be looking to push the £30m mark going by the state of the market - enough to buy a replacement with a little left over to supplement other areas of the squad. They scooped Owen for a miserly fee, and nabbed Macca on a free so consider it the outstanding amount.
If they aren't willing to meet the valuation, they can look elsewhere and I don't necessarily agree that we'd be left with a big problem on our hands. The hype dies down, Xabi returns to life on Merseyside and training with the lads before reality sets in, still on a three year deal and with a huge season ahead of us. He doesn't seem the kind of guy to get the 'ump, and once the season starts we're all geared up and ready to go and his focus turns to Liverpool. The fans will continue to sing his name and soon enough the whole saga will have diffused.
That really is the decisive unknown for me - how upset would he be? Perhaps there could be family reasons behind any suggestion of a move? Only Rafa and those closest to Xabi know the answers to these questions. If Rafa could reasonably see that the guy has his heart set on a return to Spain, and there is a family element to it, then I'd be convinced we should really be looking to let him go (once we'd done everything to convince him otherwise that is). If we ignored those wishes then it could turn personal and to that extent Xabi could feel thoroughly disregarded. That isn't a line we want to cross going into a new season, and besides out of decency we'd do well to grant him his wish. I suspect that could be a big part of the motivation as he isn't your typical 'money grabbing so and so' of a player, while he'll get a great sporting opportunity whether he stays or goes.
