Last season we had a fit Kewell, Gerrard was fantastic and Xabi was great as ever. We did place a serious title challenge and slipped towards the middle/end.

I think you will find that our results from end October to the end of the season were better than anyones, it was our early season form that ensured we didn't make a title challenge.

We have 5 midfielders, 4 very good ones, and one unknown who we all hope is going to be great. No one is saying its ideal to sell Alonso,but if its a choice between losing Alonso and getting in a top quality striker, I WOULD PREFER THE STRIKER, and take my chances that the other 4 midfielders could cope. If we could cope with Zenden playing defensive midfielder, I am pretty sure Lucas or Gerrard could cope in a crisis.

Or put another way I have more faith in Gerrard, Mascherano,Sissoko and Lucas than I have in Bellamy, Kuyt, and Crouch. If we have enough money theres no problem, but have we enough money?

The new owners have said time and time againt that they will back Rafa to get the players he wants. Then again, Rafa has also said time and time again that he will only get the right player for the right price. I seriously don't think he will pay over 20 million for a striker, I also dont think we will be getting more than 2-3 players, being another player on the right, one on the left and a striker.

Even if it's true Alonso has been below his best that would be just a bad season of a player that has showed what's he's capable of this 3 years, and when he was a newbie, he was very praised aswell. More than Mascherano, even.

If u really want to look at it.....the fact is alonso has had 2 sub-par seasons.....

I mean he had a good 1st season. But his 2nd season was very average. His 3rd season was really below average.

Don't get me wrong....i don't want rafa to sell alonso. I am in the "pro-squad depth" camp myself. But if Barca offer 20 million, i would take it.

Just saying it as how i see alonso playing on TV.

His 1st season (with mediocre  players like baros, pongolle, mellor, cisse..etc)..he was immense. He simply controlled and dictated the whole midfield.

But compare that with  his performance in the 2nd and 3rd seasons...somethings amiss..
