This article has alreaady been posted in the Jan Kromkamp thread. Not getting on you for making a whole thread on it, but just think it's silly to have one.
Personally, I find van Basten's comments to be bizarre and think he's out of line making them. Obviously, Kromkamp has severely furthered his career in the past year or so by leaving Dutch football. Granted he hasn't been playing regularly, but the bigger the club you join the harder it is to get into the first team because of competition. At Villarreal he was given his fair share of games to start out, but didn't impress enough and found it hard to get a game afterwards. Language problems and difficulty settling in, or just plain sub par performances - however you want to look at it. Then, a chance to get his career back on track comes via the swap deal with Villarreal for Josemi. He might have made a "bad" decision in joining Villarreal when you look at how eager he was to leave, but you could tell that they thought Kromkamp would be first choice right-back when they signed him. Things just didn't work out for him there. I fail to see, though, how it was a mistake going there in the first place and who would have turned that opportunity down. Van basten is obviously very short-sighted with his comments on Jan and operating with the knowledge of hindsight. He just sees someone who isn't getting regular first-team football, and someone who's chances of getting a place in the Holland side being more difficult now because of circumstances. He doesn't think of the possibility of Kromkamp devoloping as a player in time to come by playing at a higher level, and having to maintain that level to keep your spot because of able competition. Van Basten is just worried now that he might have to find another alternative in his squad. It's up to Kromkamp to prove his worth to the first team and Holland squad now. He didn't do that in Spain, lets hope he's dead set on it here..
